Animation Evaluation
Ryan Worcester
Technical Quality
• I feel that the walk cycle turned out quite well,
the movement of the arms and legs really
gives the impression that the monkey is
moving along not just standing still.
• The parallax scrolling helped give the
animation more 3D depth, the different
movement speeds of the grass, trees and sky
in the background really gave the animation a
more professional effect.
• I think the shot types that I used helped tell
the story the best way possible. the first
establishing shot helped set the scene whilst
the close ups used eloped show the
character’s expressions, which was important
in the animation.
• The animation was fairly fluid, not jittery as I
didn't want a hand drawn look. This was
possible by using key framing in After Effects.
Creative Quality
• I feel that the characters in the
animation are unique and
creative, such as Barry the
talking banana.
• The script was somewhat
dark, as it involves a talking
banana screaming due to its
head being splattered on the
ground, however this is part of
the humour that I intended for.
Professional Comparison
• I took some inspiration for my script as
well as my animation style from The Grim
Adventures Of Billy & Mandy
(TGAOB&M).
• I wanted to have a clean, vector-like
animation style, not hand drawn and
rough. TGAOB&M was a good example
of what I was looking for. Although my
animation quality isn't up to scratch with
TGAOB&M, I still feel that I made a
comparable style in my animation.
• If you have ever watch TGAOB&M, you
would know that it is famous for its dark
humour. I took inspiration from the
animation series and came up with the
talking banana idea as I feel that the idea
could easily be a gag in TGAOB&M.
Appeal to Target Audience
• When creating my animation, I was always trying to think of what my target
audience would like to see. My target audience was around my age (16-18)
and were fans of dark, humorous short animation sketches.
I asked a member of my target audience (Kieran from my TA Profile) to see
what he thought about my final animation
• Humour: “I thought it was really funny, the prolonged screaming from the
banana and the monkey really worked well in creating a twisted, awkward
animation.”
• Characters: “The character were both pretty funny, especially the banana.
They were both drawn and animated well.”
• Visuals: “The visuals could maybe have fitted better with the darkness of the
humour, but the overall it looked professional and was enjoyable to watch.”
Use of Software
• When making my animation, I used 2 different
programs: Photoshop to create the different elements
of the animation (walk cycle frames, parallax scrolling
elements etc.) and After Effects to actually animate
those elements.
• I decided to use Photoshop to create the animation
elements as I feel most comfortable using the
software. It’s pixel-based format made making the
elements very easy.
• I decided to use After Effects to animate the
elements together as I already had some experience
in using the software, and as I was familiar with using
the keyframe functions in After Effects, it was simple
to animate my elements together.
