Anemia is common in the elderly and its prevalence increases with age. While anemia is often accepted as an inevitable consequence of aging, a cause can be identified in approximately 80% of elderly patients with anemia. The most common causes of anemia in the elderly are anemia of chronic disease, iron deficiency, vitamin B12/folate deficiency, and blood loss. Evaluation and treatment of anemia in the elderly is similar to younger patients and involves identifying the underlying cause.
