Anderson A Final Project
My intended audience is a very special group of
people. These individuals are the very reason
that I work for Western Oregon University. This
group consist of a divers group of individuals
ranging from eighteen to sixty. They span
multiple national backgrounds, covering all
variety of color creed and religious beliefs. They
come from many different country's not just the
US. That right I'm Speaking of the every
enduring collage student.
Unit of Learning 1
The thing that I want to teach these students is
how to navigate the some times difficult and
confusing processes involved in getting there
degree. I'm not talking about there classes. As
difficult as those can be we all enter collage with
the understanding that we will have to work hard
to complete our courses with good grades. No, I
am talking about the the intricate and often
hidden portion of there degree. How to
understand the intricate paperwork involved with
the registrar's office.
Unit of Learning 2
Those confusing course subs, the often forgotten
application process, and lets not forget the
infamous and daunting academic petition just to
name a few things. I wish to help students under
DegreeWorks Audits, how to read them and what
it all means. My purpose in all of this is to help the
confused or struggling student understand how to
use the system to there advantage. Elevating
some of there anxiety, and allowing them to
concentrate more on there study's and less on
stressing about the hoops that they might have to
jump through.
Lesson One: The Introduction
This lesson will focus on getting the students to
understand where the registrar's office is and why
they need to know. The simple fact is that most
students do not have a clue where the registrar's
office is or why they would even want to know until
they need help. Quite often by time they get
referred to our office they have been told to go talk
to so many people that they just want us to fix
there problems. Some times this is possible but
most often we need the faculty to fill out
paperwork so that we can fix the problem.
Lesson One: The Introduction
Much of the problem comes from students telling
each other that they took this course so they
should be able to as well, not understanding that
there catalog years are different. Now this is to
much to handle all in one lesson so we will
simply start out with a podcast that shows up on
there portal. In this podcast we will give a
description of why a student might want to check
in with the registrar's office and how to find us.
Lesson One: The Introduction
In this same podcast I would like to cover where
the students can find the forms that they might
need to fill out and the instructions on how to fill
them out. I chose a Podcast for the first lesson
because it is simple quick and can be easily set
up and placed in a discreet place on a page that
the student is already using without being overly
intrusive.
Lesson Two: Site Navigation
Navigating the web site. This screen cast should be
set up on the registrar's main web page. You know
that one that the Podcast sent all of the students
to. That's right we want to give them a tutorial on
how to get the most out of this site right from the
start. If you already know everything then you can
just ignore it, but this is the perfect place for the
students to start.
Lesson Two: Site Navigation
We will show them how to access the student
clearing house link, so that they can order
transcripts, contact information so that they can
get in touch with the staff of the registrar's office
with there questions. And of course where to find
all those forms that they might need to fill out. But
why a screen cast, well the simple fact is that with
the screen cast we can walk them through the site
showing them all the links on the screen and
telling them what to look for.
Lesson Three: The Application
That's right I'm talking about the application for
graduation. This form is simple, but has a lot of
confusion surrounding it. In this case we will use a
Slide share. By linking our Application to a tutorial
on how to fill it out and what each of the areas
mean then students can learn what they need to
include when they turn this form in. There are
many students that do not understand what the
anticipated graduation date means.
Lesson Three: The Application
Instead of telling us that they will finish at the end of
Fall term they say December, or even more
common is that they think that December is Winter
term. So the goal is to make this form less
confusing for the student and to get all the
supporting documents turned in at the same time
as the application. Now why the Screen Cast?
Well if we put this in to a screen cast the student
can read the instructions at there leisure while
they work on the form.
Lesson Four: Forms
For this lesson we will use the Screen cast again. I
know we have already used this but the simple
fact is that it really is the best tool to use for
instructing how to fill out forms and what there
proper use is. This will actually be several different
Screen Casts. One for each of the forms that we
use in the registrar's office. In these screen casts
the students will find how to petition an
institutional policy, drop or add a course when
online registration is not active, and many more
useful aspects.
Lesson Five: DegreeWorks
Here is the one that has to be done in a in person
with student login. This can be done as a one on
one interactive discussion or as a group
presentation in a lecture style. To start we will
present this in the lecture style format using
modern smart class rooms during new student
week. The goal is to get the student comfortable
with reading their Audit screen that DegreeWorks
creates for the student.
Lesson Five: DegreeWorks
What each section is for who should be advising
them in these sections and what the different
symbols mean. In addition we will be teaching
them what the different tools available to them are
and how to use them. In this case the web based
DegreeWorks tool is both the subject and the
medium for teaching the student.
Final lesson: There is no Final Lesson
That is the final lesson will be social media contact.
All of the previous lessons will provide links to the
contact information for registrar employee's
including a twitter account that the employee's will
post to on a regular basis letting any one that
follows it know about important events. Like Last
day to add a course, last day to drop.
Final lesson: There is no Final Lesson
When to get your graduation regalia, where to sign
up for graduation, and other important events in
the students academic lives. Twitter works best for
this simply because most students are using it.
Well we might have to add tumbler as well bet the
point is to use social media to keep the student
informed and up to date.
