Ancillary Research
By Sabrina Pinnu
Ancillary Research
 We have decided to research a variety of different double page spread magazines
and radio adverts. This will help us when we need to make our own double page
magazine spread and radio advert. By looking at different ones it will give us an
idea on what type of conventions we would need to add that would best suit our
documentary which is about crime specifically. By this we want to be able to
attract our target audience that would make it interesting for them to be able to go
and watch it.
The masterhead of the magazine shows
how important it is due to establishing the
companies name, so that the audience can
recognize the brand. It is always in big
font and in capitals to make it stand out,
therefore easy to be recognised and to
remember.
The barcode is for purchasing the
product and therefore it sometimes
has the release date which is to
notify the consumers.
The main heading which is shown at
the front of the magazine which is
written in capital letters, this is
trying to imply to the audience on
what this programme is about
therefore trying to portray a message.
The use of dark colours such as red and
black connotes a sense of danger and
fear that this programme is trying to
imply to the audience. Therefore these
colours are implying to the audience of
the genre of programme which is crime.
The question is trying to grab the
audiences attention by telling them
to watch this programme, therefore
they are questioning the audience to
make them feel intrigued to go and
watch it.
This is seen to be a form of an advertisement
pattern which they are trying to catch the
audiences attention by making them feel involved.
This shows the channel that this programme is shown,
this is because they want to display to the audience by
giving them an easy assess on where they could get
hold on being able to watch the programme.
This is a pulled quote which links in
with the main image by the words that
have been used this implies how
something is going to happen, but also
to attract the reader’s attention on
this particular quote.
The main image is showing to the audience
who the main character of this programme
is and therefore its trying to highlight her
status on what type of a character she
could be. By her facial expressions it shows
she is a strict yet assertive character.
DETECTIVE - POSTER
The use of pictures used
within this double spread
magazine shows the amount of
characters that are portrayed.
However the man that is used
within the front cover shows
to the audience that he is the
main character of this
programme. This also takes up
most of the page, this is to
draw the reader’s attention to
give them an understanding of
what this article is about.
The main title used is there to show
the reader about what this article is
going to be about, behind the scenes.
Therefore this indicates how they are
showing the audiences about what
happens when filming and what kind of
facilities are used, this way they are
giving them a more exclusive insight
about it.
By showing the main heading of the article this implies to the
reader that this heading is a leading article for ‘New Who!’. This
draws the audience’s attention by alerting them who the new
Dr.Who is and therefore making them feel interested about
finding out more by watching the programme. As well as it is
seen to be a catchy headline and therefore it tells the reader to
instantly have an understanding f the article and what it is
about.
The use of written texts in black where the
background is shown to be white, this implies
that the reader is able to clearly read the text
and therefore not struggle.
The background shows the area of where the
programme was filmed, it shows the area
being around the countryside. This instantly
tells the reader what this article is going to be
about but also they want to attract the
audiences attention as the background is not
plain yet filled up of the area where they are
going to film.
This shows both of the main
characters behind the scenes
preparing for the shooting with
a script in their hand, this tells
the reader directly that these
two characters are the main
characters for this programme.
DR. WHO - MAGAZINE
The drop cap implies where the reader
should begin to read, therefore it’s there to
make it easier for them and for them to not
struggle, due to the small text. This will
give the reader a positive read.
The page numbers indicates to the
reader which page to go to read
about specific information, and
where you could find out about on
what you would want to know
specifically about the article.
A strap line is mainly put there to give the
reader an insight whether they want to
read the rest of the article or not. It is
usually a short sentence which is seen as in
introduction to what the article is going to
be about.
The pulled quote invites the
reader into knowing what this
music artist is excited about,
therefore she is expressing
her excitement to alert and to
attract the reader. But also it
shows the significance of the
quote to the article. It is
there to give the audience an
insight about what the article
is about.
This is the master which is shown to display how important it is
due to establishing the companies name, so that the audience
can recognize the brand. In this case it is in small capital
letters, however it is mainly advertised in a bigger font in
capital letters to draw the audiences attention straight to it.
This main image is showing the reader
who the main singer is but also this
takes up most of the page, as this is to
draw in the reader’s attention to find
out what is so interesting about the
picture which is shown in the article.
The small font which is in
black and white, it is seen t
be contrasting as it leads the
reader’s attention to the bold
bright colour writing. It is
there to help the reader to be
able to read the text properly
and therefore not struggle.
The singer is trying to put out
her character but also her
passion for the music industry
and how amazing it was, to
do photo-shoots.
The colours of purple, white and black are portrayed to
show the girly type of style. These are usual colours that
girls most likely choose. This is showing the reader already
on what the article is going to be about.
The white background is shown as they
want the audience to concentrate on
the singer but also the writing that has
been written about the singer which is
brightly coloured in purple.
ANNA PRITCHARD - MAGAZINE
The drop cap implies where the
reader should begin to read,
therefore it’s there to make it easier
for them and for them to not
struggle, due to the small text. This
will give the reader a positive read.
The page numbers
indicates to the reader
which page to go to read
about specific
information, and where
you could find out about
on what you would want
to know specifically about
the article.
A strap line is mainly put
there to give the reader an
insight whether they want
to read the rest of the
article or not. It is usually a
short sentence which is seen
as in introduction to what
the article is going to be
about.
These sub-headings which are shown in
bright purple are there to make it easier
for the reader to read but also to find out
specific information about the singer. This
way they are making it more simpler for
the reader and therefore this will make
them to carry on wanting to read the
article.
JESSIE J - MAGAZINE
This main image is
showing the reader a
popular singer which
instantly draws in the
reader’s attention to
find out what is so
interesting about the
picture which is
shown in the article.
But also this takes up
most of the page as
they want to imply
most of the article on
her.
The caption is there to give
background information about the
singer, and to also show what type
of character she is. Therefore they
are trying to show the reader how
brave she is which will want to
make the reader to find out more
about her.
The drop cap implies
where the reader should
begin to read, therefore
it’s there to make it
easier for them and for
them to not struggle, due
to the small text. This
will give the reader a
positive read.
These sub-headings which are shown in
bright orange are there to make it
easier for the reader to read but also
to find out specific information about
the singer. This way they are making it
more simpler for the reader and
therefore this will make them to carry
on wanting to read the article.
The main headline is shown in bright orange which stands out
against the white/grey background to attract the reader’s
attention as it is clearly shown in big bold font, to make the
reader assume what type of character the singer is, and in this
case a bubbly type of character.
The page numbers indicates to the
reader which page to go to read about
specific information, and where you
could find out about on what you
would want to know specifically about
the article.
It shows the magazine’s name which is in small
font in the corner of the page, this is to direct
the reader how this type of magazine company
only concentrates on singers.
The kicker is there to
direct the reader’s
attention to give them an
insight on what they will
be reading about within
the article. It is usually a
short sentence which is
seen as in introduction to
what the article is going to
be about.
Gutters have been used within
this magazine this is shown within
the information that is written in
Italic form.
Artists name written in Italic form and
in black bold writing to inform the
reader about who this article is about.
The bold white font if the main heading,
contrasts with the black background this
indicates to the reader in what this article is
about, and therefore they are trying to portray
a hidden message to what it is showing.
Therefore it straight away catches the reader’s
attention and is seen to be eye catching.
The page numbers indicate
on where to head to read
about specific information,
and where you could find
out about on what you
would want to know.
The main image represents how the athlete’s body
language shows how he is healthy due to his posture by
the way he is standing straight up but also determined
to succeed in the game. This shows the reader on the
type of characteristic he is and what his aim is to
achieve. The main image is there to stand out the most
to attract the reader’s attention and to find out more
about this article.
This image of the skiing board
represents how he is interested in a
water type of sport, which implies to
the audience that he is talented
enough to succeed.
The colours connotes how this athlete is
supporting for Britain, and therefore
shows a positive view on things as he is
passionate on what he is doing, this is
portrayed by the colours of red and white.
However the dark blue and black colours
connotes the mysterious side of him,
therefore the readers do not know how he
will perform, so it is left for them to see.
It makes him look bold and outstanding.
The use of the white
text helps the audience
to be able to read it
properly and therefore
not struggle.
The background portrays how
the double spread pages have
been spilt into two sections.
This implies how on the left
they are alerting the reader
about the athlete but on the
other side it portrays the
athlete as being the main part
of the double page spread. They
want the reader to have their
eye caught on the athlete
more.
The background also portrays the dull
sense of how dangerous this sport could
be, therefore showing the main athlete
having a sense of bravery.
HURTLING HEADLONG TO GLORY - MAGAZINE
This shows the skyline of the feature of the magazine
which is mainly written at the top to tell us what is
inside. It tells the reader the genre of the magazine
and what it is mainly aimed at and in this case it is
about a particular sport.
A pulled quote makes it direct by
linking it to the main image which
makes it look establishing to the
audience to invite them to have an
understanding of what the article is
about.
The drop cap implies where the
reader should begin to read,
therefore it’s there to make it
easier for them and to not
struggle, due to the small text.
This will give the reader a
positive read.

– RADIO ADVERT - MEERKAT
 Conventions used:
- Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not.
- A man’s voiceover was used which had a funny accent. This is mainly used within all Meerkat’s commercial
radio adverts. This is because they want to make it lively to attract the listener’s attention, but also to
make them carry on listening.
- Music played at the background whilst voiceover – The music starts very quietly then gradually gets louder
then goes quieter where they then add in animal sounds. They are trying to invite the listener to engage
them by making them laugh but also to keep them interested to what they are trying to point out.
- Humour advert – This is to attract the listener's attention by making them laugh, and to make them
associate themselves about the product with happy feelings.
- 30 second advert – This is because they do not want to lose the listener's attention by making it long
therefore they want to keep it short and simple, which makes the listener into wanting to listen to the rest
of the advert.
- Use of animal sounds – This is seen to be comical as they want to attract the listener to make them laugh
but also to keep them interested about what they are trying to target at them.
- Realistic advert – which makes the listener relate directly to the product, this is mentioned at the end of
the advert with a man voiceover talking about terms and conditions.
- Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the listener. This is done when they mention
‘Ccomparethemarket.com’, to attract the listener’s mind and therefore make them aware of the website to
go too.

– RADIO ADVERT – BOOTS: THE GREAT BIG
HEARING CHECK
 Conventions used:
- Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not
about these hearing checks.
- Realistic advert - which makes the listener relate directly to the product about hearing checks.
- A women voiceover which is there to persuade the listener about hearing checks – she spoke clearly and had
an English accent.
- The mode of hearing check is addressed to the audience which is for over 18’s only.
- Children singing ‘head shoulders, knees and toe, eyes and… and mouth and nose’, in the beginning of the
advert to attract the listener's attention about hearing, which this advert is aimed at.
- Promotion used as anyone can come and get it checked for free at great big hearing check from boots. This
way they are alerting the listener’s and encouraging them to come and get it checked out. This is there way
of promoting hearing checks therefore being unique from other hearing check companies.
- Usually radio adverts are up to 30-60 seconds however this one is up to 32 seconds – They want to make it
short and simple to attract the listener so they interested in what is being said.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LTIUkNUQmw
– RADIO ADVERT – BUY TO LET CARS
 Conventions used:
- Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not.
- Realistic advert - which makes the listener relate directly to the product about letting cars.
- A women voiceover which is there to persuade the listener about funding a car, with a fixed monthly return.
- Music played within the background which is calming yet to keep the listener intrigued by alerting their
attention on the advert and to make them keep listening.
- Dramatic – This is because the women is trying to make the product seem amazing and a ‘must have’ to
attract the listener’s attention.
- Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the audience.
- 34 second advert – short and simple to keep the listener's attention on the advert and therefore they are
able to listen to what is being offered to them.
- Had an English accent to make it seem realistic to alert the listener about cars.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS1Qm7CNAB
Y – RADIO ADVERTS – TRANSPORT FOR LONDON
 Conventions used:
- Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not.
- Dramatic – This is because the women is trying to promote to use the official TFL website for congestion
charge, therefore they are trying to alert the listener to use their website.
- Voiceover of a women with an English accent, where she is talking clearly for auditability.
- 34 second advert – short and simple to keep the listener’s attention and to attract the listener by being
straight to the point.
- No music is played within the background – This is because they are trying to portray to the listeners a sense
of realism and how serious this is.
- Realistic advert - which makes the listener relate directly to the issue
- She has introduced the slogan of the product which is – ‘TFL’. Therefore they are trying to encourage the
listener's to be able to trust their website and to alert them to use this official website which is their main
one.
- Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the listener, where they are alerting the listener
about making sure they use the correct website.
Conclusion
 By choosing the correct use of radio adverts and double page spread magazines, it
has helped me recognise the type of common conventions that are mainly used
within these. By this we need to be able to have something similar to what I have
researched such as a radio advert and a double page magazine spread relating to
our specific documentary (i.e crime) Therefore it is important to choose the
correct font, colours, images that will make it recognisable to the audience on
what the documentary that we are trying to portray is about.

Ancillary Research

  • 2. Ancillary Research  We have decided to research a variety of different double page spread magazines and radio adverts. This will help us when we need to make our own double page magazine spread and radio advert. By looking at different ones it will give us an idea on what type of conventions we would need to add that would best suit our documentary which is about crime specifically. By this we want to be able to attract our target audience that would make it interesting for them to be able to go and watch it.
  • 3. The masterhead of the magazine shows how important it is due to establishing the companies name, so that the audience can recognize the brand. It is always in big font and in capitals to make it stand out, therefore easy to be recognised and to remember. The barcode is for purchasing the product and therefore it sometimes has the release date which is to notify the consumers. The main heading which is shown at the front of the magazine which is written in capital letters, this is trying to imply to the audience on what this programme is about therefore trying to portray a message. The use of dark colours such as red and black connotes a sense of danger and fear that this programme is trying to imply to the audience. Therefore these colours are implying to the audience of the genre of programme which is crime. The question is trying to grab the audiences attention by telling them to watch this programme, therefore they are questioning the audience to make them feel intrigued to go and watch it. This is seen to be a form of an advertisement pattern which they are trying to catch the audiences attention by making them feel involved. This shows the channel that this programme is shown, this is because they want to display to the audience by giving them an easy assess on where they could get hold on being able to watch the programme. This is a pulled quote which links in with the main image by the words that have been used this implies how something is going to happen, but also to attract the reader’s attention on this particular quote. The main image is showing to the audience who the main character of this programme is and therefore its trying to highlight her status on what type of a character she could be. By her facial expressions it shows she is a strict yet assertive character. DETECTIVE - POSTER
  • 4. The use of pictures used within this double spread magazine shows the amount of characters that are portrayed. However the man that is used within the front cover shows to the audience that he is the main character of this programme. This also takes up most of the page, this is to draw the reader’s attention to give them an understanding of what this article is about. The main title used is there to show the reader about what this article is going to be about, behind the scenes. Therefore this indicates how they are showing the audiences about what happens when filming and what kind of facilities are used, this way they are giving them a more exclusive insight about it. By showing the main heading of the article this implies to the reader that this heading is a leading article for ‘New Who!’. This draws the audience’s attention by alerting them who the new Dr.Who is and therefore making them feel interested about finding out more by watching the programme. As well as it is seen to be a catchy headline and therefore it tells the reader to instantly have an understanding f the article and what it is about. The use of written texts in black where the background is shown to be white, this implies that the reader is able to clearly read the text and therefore not struggle. The background shows the area of where the programme was filmed, it shows the area being around the countryside. This instantly tells the reader what this article is going to be about but also they want to attract the audiences attention as the background is not plain yet filled up of the area where they are going to film. This shows both of the main characters behind the scenes preparing for the shooting with a script in their hand, this tells the reader directly that these two characters are the main characters for this programme. DR. WHO - MAGAZINE The drop cap implies where the reader should begin to read, therefore it’s there to make it easier for them and for them to not struggle, due to the small text. This will give the reader a positive read. The page numbers indicates to the reader which page to go to read about specific information, and where you could find out about on what you would want to know specifically about the article. A strap line is mainly put there to give the reader an insight whether they want to read the rest of the article or not. It is usually a short sentence which is seen as in introduction to what the article is going to be about.
  • 5. The pulled quote invites the reader into knowing what this music artist is excited about, therefore she is expressing her excitement to alert and to attract the reader. But also it shows the significance of the quote to the article. It is there to give the audience an insight about what the article is about. This is the master which is shown to display how important it is due to establishing the companies name, so that the audience can recognize the brand. In this case it is in small capital letters, however it is mainly advertised in a bigger font in capital letters to draw the audiences attention straight to it. This main image is showing the reader who the main singer is but also this takes up most of the page, as this is to draw in the reader’s attention to find out what is so interesting about the picture which is shown in the article. The small font which is in black and white, it is seen t be contrasting as it leads the reader’s attention to the bold bright colour writing. It is there to help the reader to be able to read the text properly and therefore not struggle. The singer is trying to put out her character but also her passion for the music industry and how amazing it was, to do photo-shoots. The colours of purple, white and black are portrayed to show the girly type of style. These are usual colours that girls most likely choose. This is showing the reader already on what the article is going to be about. The white background is shown as they want the audience to concentrate on the singer but also the writing that has been written about the singer which is brightly coloured in purple. ANNA PRITCHARD - MAGAZINE The drop cap implies where the reader should begin to read, therefore it’s there to make it easier for them and for them to not struggle, due to the small text. These sub-headings which are shown in bright purple are there to make it easier for the reader to read but also to find out specific information about the singer. This way they are making it more simpler for the reader and therefore this will make them to carry on wanting to read the article.
  • 6. JESSIE J - MAGAZINE This main image is showing the reader a popular singer which instantly draws in the reader’s attention to find out what is so interesting about the picture which is shown in the article. But also this takes up most of the page as they want to imply most of the article on her. The caption is there to give background information about the singer, and to also show what type of character she is. Therefore they are trying to show the reader how brave she is which will want to make the reader to find out more about her. The drop cap implies where the reader should begin to read, therefore it’s there to make it easier for them and for them to not struggle, due to the small text. This will give the reader a positive read. These sub-headings which are shown in bright orange are there to make it easier for the reader to read but also to find out specific information about the singer. This way they are making it more simpler for the reader and therefore this will make them to carry on wanting to read the article. The main headline is shown in bright orange which stands out against the white/grey background to attract the reader’s attention as it is clearly shown in big bold font, to make the reader assume what type of character the singer is, and in this case a bubbly type of character. The page numbers indicates to the reader which page to go to read about specific information, and where you could find out about on what you would want to know specifically about the article. It shows the magazine’s name which is in small font in the corner of the page, this is to direct the reader how this type of magazine company only concentrates on singers. The kicker is there to direct the reader’s attention to give them an insight on what they will be reading about within the article. The bold white font if the main heading, contrasts with the black background this indicates to the reader in what this article is about, and therefore they are trying to portray a hidden message to what it is showing. Therefore it straight away catches the reader’s attention and is seen to be eye catching. The page numbers indicate on where to head to read about specific information, and where you could find out about on what you would want to know. • 8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_L2IfQwI_A – RADIO ADVERT - MEERKAT  Conventions used: - Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not. - A man’s voiceover was used which had a funny accent. This is mainly used within all Meerkat’s commercial radio adverts. This is because they want to make it lively to attract the listener’s attention, but also to make them carry on listening. - Music played at the background whilst voiceover – The music starts very quietly then gradually gets louder then goes quieter where they then add in animal sounds. They are trying to invite the listener to engage them by making them laugh but also to keep them interested to what they are trying to point out. - Humour advert – This is to attract the listener's attention by making them laugh, and to make them associate themselves about the product with happy feelings. - 30 second advert – This is because they do not want to lose the listener's attention by making it long therefore they want to keep it short and simple, which makes the listener into wanting to listen to the rest of the advert. - Use of animal sounds – This is seen to be comical as they want to attract the listener to make them laugh but also to keep them interested about what they are trying to target at them. - Realistic advert – which makes the listener relate directly to the product, this is mentioned at the end of the advert with a man voiceover talking about terms and conditions. - Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the listener. This is done when they mention ‘Ccomparethemarket.com’, to attract the listener’s mind and therefore make them aware of the website to go too.

This way they are alerting the listener’s and encouraging them to come and get it checked out. This is there way of promoting hearing checks therefore being unique from other hearing check companies. - Usually radio adverts are up to 30-60 seconds however this one is up to 32 seconds – They want to make it short and simple to attract the listener so they interested in what is being said.
  • 10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LTIUkNUQmw – RADIO ADVERT – BUY TO LET CARS  Conventions used: - Date: Summer 2014 – so the audience know how long ago it was and whether it is seen to be recent or not. - Realistic advert - which makes the listener relate directly to the product about letting cars. - A women voiceover which is there to persuade the listener about funding a car, with a fixed monthly return. - Music played within the background which is calming yet to keep the listener intrigued by alerting their attention on the advert and to make them keep listening. - Dramatic – This is because the women is trying to make the product seem amazing and a ‘must have’ to attract the listener’s attention. - Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the audience. - 34 second advert – short and simple to keep the listener's attention on the advert and therefore they are able to listen to what is being offered to them. - Had an English accent to make it seem realistic to alert the listener about cars.

Therefore they are trying to encourage the listener's to be able to trust their website and to alert them to use this official website which is their main one. - Has a sense of a jingle to make the advert memorable by the listener, where they are alerting the listener about making sure they use the correct website.
  • 12. Conclusion  By choosing the correct use of radio adverts and double page spread magazines, it has helped me recognise the type of common conventions that are mainly used within these. By this we need to be able to have something similar to what I have researched such as a radio advert and a double page magazine spread relating to our specific documentary (i.e crime) Therefore it is important to choose the correct font, colours, images that will make it recognisable to the audience on what the documentary that we are trying to portray is about.
