There are multiple models on the cover image giving different poses to indicate the genre. Key information like the price, date, and website are included in the barcode with different fonts and sizes used. The cover uses conventions like a masthead, issue details, and medium shot of the artist looking at the camera. The double page spread similarly features the artist's image and maintains consistency with branding. While following conventions, the spread also includes unique elements like a downloadable song. Overall, the magazine designs draw from typical magazine styles but include some distinguishing characteristics.
This double page spread from Q magazine features an interview with the band Muse. The layout uses a large central image of the band and contrasting colors to draw the eye. Pull quotes in different colors highlight quotes from the interview. The spread also shows a smaller past image of the band and uses fonts and styles to convey the band's retro-futuristic image and appeal to teenage and young adult readers.

Question 1
1. Question 1
In what way does my media product
use develop or challenge forms and
conventions of a real media product?
2. Q magazine has used a the tag line
“the worlds greatest music magazine”
Obviously this quote may be seen as
biased . When the implied audience
are skimming the front cover this will
jump out over all the other music
magazines. It makes the magazine
seem more exiting then all the others.
Left-side third: the masthead is on the
left hand side of the magazine this is
because we read from the left to the
right and top to bottom. It is important to
have the things that are wanting to be
There are a range of fonts and font
sizes. This is so that the magazine
doesn’t look uninteresting and helps
to make the magazine seem more
alternative then the other magazines.
It also varies to depict the importance
of a certain advertisement – if its
important it will be more aesthetically
pleasing but still bold. Generically the
font will not be too complicated
otherwise it will start to look tacky
and unprofessional. Range of fonts
and font sizes of differentiate.
The models are kings of Leon. 2 of the band
members are looking at the camera this
shows that they are still connecting with
the implied audience but the other two are
looking away from the Mise– en– scene–
everything that is don’t in front of the
camera .
the colour theme maintains the mice-
en-scene black white and red with
the mast head “Q” in the top right of
the magazines. The only time this will
change is when the magazine has a
special edition.
Front cover
Models face is never covered by text.
They want you decide to buy the magazine
before you know the price of the
magazine. It is usually put it in the bottom
right hand corner as this is the last place
you will look when browsing the front
cover. The price is not wanted to be
advertised that is why the font is so small
Cover lines: information about major
articles given ion the front page.

Ellipsis used to
suggest that
there is much

than stated of
the cover .
Direct mode of address - model looking at
the camera to create a connection with
the audience. This makes the audience
feel that the magazine is for them.
Use of quotations
Personal pronouns used to
address the reader/ audience
Statements are short and to the point.
3. Just like Q magazine I have
used a the tag line. This is
“the most anticipated music
magazine”
I have used a range of
fonts and text sizes.
There are 3 main
different ones. I have not
used a generic sans serif
font for the mast head.
This is because my
magazine is an
alternative magazine the
masthead also needed to
project this.
As my this is the
first edition of
my magazine I
cannot overlap it
dramatically
with the
medium long
shot of my artist.
This is because
the name is not
well known by
the audience
yet.
All magazine's follow the left side
third rule. In my magazine I felt
this would be a convention that
would be important for me to
mirror on my magazine. All of the
information which is seen as
important in attracting my
implied audience is on the left
side of my magazine. The rest
which just helps to attract them
further are on the right. Such as
the “first edition” this is an
important factor but would not
be what got them to but the
magazine.
Direct mode of
address
the mise en scene for my
magazine is black, yellow
and white. I used these
colours as they all link well
together and the
underlining meanings
contrast against each
other. Q’s mise en scene
is very simple also so I felt
it was important to keep
mine simple.
I have made sure to
obstruct my artists
face with the
masthead or any
text/images.
4. Identify cover story's from the front
cover
Use different font/colour/size
to distinguish between
subheadings. The section
below the main cover story is
in red. This links it back to the
colour scheme.
House style-
The masthead is always still there
The same colours are maintained
from the front cover. This means
that people can associate the
magazine with this colour
include the words “contents
page” this means that the
implied reader knows that this
is where they can find
guidance for the rest of the
magazine .
The branding is usually on there still.
The shoot type of the image
is going to be long shot or
medium one shot (if you
have one main image) this is
because it gives you more
space on the left hand side to
talk about the contents. It
also gives you more of a
profile on the person of
whom is the main cover
story.
The biggest image
should relate to the
main cover story.
If there is a picture that
links to something in the
mag it will have a number of
which page you will find it
on.
There is one longshot of a band to
the right of the magazine., this band
will have the main cover line. This
photo will also probably be on the
front cover of this issue of magazine.
Further advertisement of the magazine
and small feature it may entail within
this issue.
Issue number could be
placed on this page.
5. Images are
numbered to
show what
page they
are linked to.
I have included the
masthead “sound wave” has
been included. This helps to
project my branding on the
product.
Overview on what the page
entails this means that they know
what they are going to outline.
The largest image on my contents
page is of the artist who as the
main cover story in the magazine.
I have included the word
“contents” this means that the
implied reader knows that this
is where they can find
guidance for the rest of the
magazine .
Further advertisement of the
magazine. Such as “o2”. My implied
audience may have forgotten what it
this entailed and when they are
reminded again it will make them
exited that they have a chance to get
some fee tickets.
“40 rated songs by your favourite
alternative artists” with in this
quote I used the second personal
pronoun. This use of synthetic
personalisation creates a
relationship with the implied
audience as they fell that
magazine is talking to them
personally..
6. Lady gaga is wearing really revealing clothing. But she is
covering up her private areas with her hands. The editor has
given a wispy affect look to her hair giving it an innocent look.
They have lightened parts of her hair which add to this affect.
She has her lips slightly parted which add to how she looks like
a sexual icon. Her eyes look quite lazy which partner up with the
parted lips. She has really long eye lases which added to this
sexual icon look which has been portrayed. The image takes up
half of the double page which suggests that her image is very
important. The purpose of the image is to represent her as a
sexual object but as being independent with an “I don’t care”
persona.
Q have included a web address This is
a use of advertisement. The company
would have paid to have had this web
address included as it is a popular artist
and many people would want to
browse this page. This means that if
they paid a certain amount of money
to have e this link imprinted then it is
likely for the implied audience of the
web page to be increases.
The idea with having the text split up into three
columns makes it easier for the implied reader to
digest. If there was a big lump of text the reader
would find it difficult to know where to stat but
having it split ups means they can start reading
the text and know they can have a break after
each section. The font is serif making the article
easier to read. The article has no hyphens as it
makes the article look neater. It also means that it
looks more neatly split up. I also noticed that the
image of lady gaga was to the right of the spread .
This is because the implied reader (lady gaga
fanatics) will see this when they turn the page
and it will pull them into the article and read it. In
the background of the text there is a large red “L”
red is a generic colour for q magazine but also red
has connotations of power and war. In the article
lady gaga talks about how she is wanting to break
impressions of her having a penis. As she says
herself “come see me try and persuade everyone
to let me wear a penis” . The colour red could
help to infer that in the article she is wanting to
put a point across. She is trying to show that she
is a powerful women and she has not got the
slightest worry as to what people think of her.
The colour red is also a colour which Is used by
he magazine Q on there colour scheme. The idea
that they have used one of their colours could
suggest that the highly influential magazine is
backing lady gaga with what she says.
The interview includes
information about lady Gaga
personal life. Like for example
they talk about the rumours
about her being a supposed
hermaphrodite . In the article
lady gaga is wanting to make a
statement with her. The text is
relayed to the readers in
second person. This makes it
easier for the interviewee to
talk about Lady Gages actions
without sounding opinionated.
It also means that the text
sounds like it is coming from
the company “Q” rather than
just an individual.
The artists name is enlarges
And at the top of the page as it
is subheading. It means that
when people are trying to find
this article in the magazine
they can double check they are
in the right place by reading
the subheading. It is larger
than the interview text as this
is the most important part of
the text.
It is generic to
start the
interview with a
sans serif font.
This is a popular
feature as it is a
discourse marker
as to where the
important parts
within the text
are starting.
Page numbers are
important as they direct
and guide the reader on
where about they are
within the magazines. It
means that when they
read the contents they
are able to find the page
of preference at ease.
This is consistent of a “Q” Magazine their home style
which includes red and white, and the majority of the
time the colour black is used for font. This is also backed
with the simple sans serif font with one section which
may be different font. The use of their mast head is an
obvious one. The artist of whom they are talking about
name will have the biggest font size. There is usually a
medium long shot of the person who has the biggest
article in the magazine. It is also common to use whole
pages for images of which are important when they are
talking about a text. Its import to have branding as it
means that the readers know that the text is by them
and if someone is looking over their shoulder for
example they can look in the bottom left and see where
the magazine is from if they are wanting to read on.
Other features with have been
conventionally included I the corner of
the page is the date. This helps to keep
track of the time of when this issue
was. So when looking back on a n issue
you know exactly when it was written
and when it would be published. If the
interview runs over the page arrows
are placed on the bottom at the end of
the text to show that the interview
runs over onto the next page. These
are important as it means that the
reader doesn't think that the text has
ended and that there is more on the
next page.
7. Just like in the Lady Gaga
interview I added in sections
where Andy Jordan was talking
about himself and his personal
life.
It in conventional to have the text split
up into three columns as it is easier to
tackle when reading it. I have
endeavoured to the same within my
text.
I have placed the image of Andy
Jordan on the left hand side with him
taking up the whole page as I want
him to be the main focus of this page.
The clothing
and his persona
is representing
the artist that
he is rather
than anything
else.
Here I have the
large initials of
Andy's name as
a water mark in
the back ground.
This is to further
ensure that the
audience knows
who the artist is.
I have included all of
the generic features
which would be at the
bottom right of a page.
They are all important
but are not the main
purpose of the page.
