MEDIA EVALUATION
Declan Cook evaluates his magazine cover and contents page that he created using Photoshop and Quark. He identifies several ways his cover challenges conventions by not having a solid color background and clustering the cover lines in one corner. His contents page follows conventions by including the front cover, date, issue number, and a three-column layout. However, weaknesses include clashing design elements, excess white space on the contents page, and images that appear too similar. Overall, he demonstrates understanding of magazine design principles but has room for improvement in using the software more proficiently.

- 1. Analysis of Professional Magazine Covers
- 2. Masthead The masthead on this magazine front cover is spread across the top of the page and has a dark shadow behind it to make it stand out from the background. This is so that it is noticeable and the reader can clearly see and know what magazine they are reading. It also has its own individual font that isn’t used anywhere else on the front cover. This is so that the magazine can be easily recognised and it is also classed as a logo for the magazine. The colour used is white which is bold and contrasts against the background, again so that the reader can read it easily and the magazine can be easily recognised.
- 3. Main Image The main image includes every member of the band looking directly into the camera. This is so that the audience of the magazine feels like there is a relationship with them and the band. They are also in level with the with the camera to show that they think they are no better than the audience. A mid shot has been used for the image as this keeps the main focus on their faces. There is one band member who is stood in front of the others as he is more recognisable than the others in the band. This is so that if a person recognises the him then they would want to buy the magazine. The band also convey the attitude of the magazine genre, using their facial expressions and body language. This helps the reader know what genre they are.
- 4. Main Headline The main headline is also in its own font, it is larger than the cover lines so that it stands out against them and it is the most noticeable one. This is so that the audience sees this as one of the first things they see as the name of the band on the main headline will most likely be most recognisable. The name of the band is made bigger than the cover lines so that it stands out from the rest and it is one of the first things the reader sees on the page too, as it is a well known name more people will be drawn to it. The green on the headline is because of the name of the band, which is Green Day, this is to make the magazine look more interesting and is trying to grab the readers attention.
- 5. Cover Lines The cover lines on the front cover are printed in 3 different colours; red, white and black. This sticks to the colour scheme and makes the cover look more clean and professional. The colour red is the boldest colour on the page, so this is used to make the cover look eye catching. The cover lines are printed in 2 different fonts and are 3 different colours so that different ones stand out. The colours contrast against the background making them stand out more for the reader.
- 6. Positioning statement The positioning statement is located at the top of the page above the magazine name. The font is simple and clear so that the reader can easily read it. The colours used are also bold and red is the boldest colour so this would catch the readers attention. This will make the reader want to read the magazine.
- 7. Skyline The skyline is placed at the bottom of the page and has a different coloured background to the rest of the cover. This is so it stands out and is more noticeable to the reader and make them read the names on the skyline which may make them want to read the magazine. The colours used are red black and white whicih is simple but bold enough to stand out.
- 8. Issue date and barcode The issue date, barcode and price are all in the same white box in the corner of the front cover. On this cover the barcode is printed sideways so that it is covering as little of the image as possible.
