The Mead s Milkweed Family Name Is Asclepiadaceae
The Mead s milkweed family name is Asclepiadaceae (milkweeds). Mead Milkweed is a nonwoody
plant with smooth stem, and has milky sap. This is a short lived annual growth. It blooms in late May
to mid June with one or two clusters that produce roughly five fourteen flowers per cluster. The
flowers are yellow green or creamy green with purple tints. However, the seeds mature from July until
around October. A single plant may have multiple stems, which is frequently being mistaken for
individual plants. It takes on average fifteen years for it to grow and develop into a mature adult. After
it reaches the adult stage, every stem produces flowers for two to three years. They can grow to be one
or two feet tall.
Habitats include slightly moist to dry tall grass and upland prairies. Soil conditions in these habitats
range from acid and nutrient poor in Missouri. Conservation efforts include delaying haying until
September, periodic burning of prairies, and rotational grazing. In the past, Mead s milkweed was
throughout much of Missouri. It is presently found in the Osage Plains region and the St. Francois
mountains region of the Ozarks.
Adaptations allow the species to change and adjust slowly to the environment for survival. The sap of
most milkweed plants is toxic. This prevents the plants from being eaten. Some insects, however, can
eat milkweeds or sip on the milkweed nectar, which is not toxic to them. Many populations contain
genetically identical plants from being

Novalis Y El Romanticismo
Novalis y la ética romántica
I. Novalis.

P. Schlemihl,

Asian Women
Nevertheless, many Asian women in particular struggle to adopt status within the society as they are
not heteronormative enough. There are many reasons why Asian women perform cosmetic surgery in
order to look white in an attempt to attain the framework of heteronormativity. One of the reasons why
Asian women want to look white is through gaining benefit in finding a partner. Based on a study of
692 undergraduates, the study has found that white women are more likely to be asked out compared
to non white women. White women have a staggering percentage of 40 percent while non white
women have roughly about 28 percent (Knox Schacht, 2012). Another study conducted from
Feliciano, Robnett, and Komaie (2009) also found that men of color with ... Show more content on

The media seeks to reinforce the framework of heteronormativity through the lifestyle held by
hegemonic social norms. The public s attitude to cosmetic surgery is heavily influenced by the crucial
role of the sociocultural in particular to the promotion of the body and beauty in the mass media
(Moon, 2015). Within the global media, the image of Asian women is fixed towards depicting social
qualities as exotic, feminine, and seductive. Due to these depictions of Asian women in the media,
Asian women are seen as dolls. In addition, Asian women are not portrayed as humans compared to
white women (Hall, 1995). This negative image of observing Asian women as inferior humans further
affect Asian women status within the concept of heteronormativity. Therefore, Asian women perform
cosmetic surgery to look white in order to alter their image and gain their power. The role of the mass
media contributes strong self images that correspond with the consumer culture, in regard to the desire
to buy the ideal beauty commodity (Askegaard, Gertsen, Langer, 2015). Since western beauty is
strongly penetrating within almost every edge of the media in Asia. The beauty ideal of Asia is largely
westernized through the extent where most models or celebrities are western or look western. With
this implementation, Western and domestic models that are embodied to western features are heavily
promoted along the goods in the Asian Market (Kim, 2003). According to Li, Min, and Belk (2008),
having pale white skin is perceived as a symbol of flawless, luxury, and prestige in the Asian cultures.
Whiteness is a source of cultural capital that is related with upper class images (Bourdieu, 1984). In
addition, Asian celebrities with fair skin tie their achievement with whiteness in order to implicit their

Armenian Genocide Essay
The world becomes a better place when there is humanity. Humanity exists when there are people who
have the desire to give, instead of take. When these generous people give without the expectation of
taking back, the world automatically offers them the better. There was poverty in all the villages of
Armenia. Armenian Christians were continuously under attacks. The attacks against Christian
Armenians occurred throughout the year 1915. This is the age that is well known for the Armenian
Genocide, which was carried out by the Ottoman Turks. Escaping the Ottoman forces, my
grandmother, Sosek Boghosian, found herself as a refuge in Iraq. Horrific acts continued to be
committed to my grandmother s descendants.
Many people had no place to live or sleep. I have interviewed my grandmother to make myself more
educated about the Armenian Genocide. She contributed to the Armenian culture in many different
ways. Mrs. Boghosian studied about the genocide from her beloved mother. Following her mother s
footsteps, she became more generous day by day. She contributed to the Armenian Culture by teaching
her children and grandchildren how to help one another. This was followed by donating food, clothes
and shelter for the kids in orphanages. These unfortunate children lost their guardians in the genocide,
along with 1.5 million other deaths.
The Armenian people lived in a very safe environment until some obstacles beset them. When the
Turks were informed that the Armenians were living a

Deathstroke Vs Deadpool Comparison
If you were given a piece of every superhero s powers known to man, which powers would make you
the most superior? Deadpool (of the Marvel Universe) can be classified as the most powerful of all
mutants, whereas, Deathstroke (of the DC universe) makes it to the top 5 list of strongest metahumans
in his own reality. Both characters were products of a scientific lab gone wrong. If both of their
universes were to merge, who would triumph in a battle between these two iconic characters?
Deadpool and Deathstroke are similar in terms of being anti heroes, however, Deadpool is superior to
Deathstroke because he has more athletic capabilities, has a variety of combat methods, and his
chances of survival are higher.

The same health regeneration ability of Wolverine was given to Deadpool. However, unlike
Wolverine, Deadpool s health regeneration is quick enough that he is quite literally immortal. In the
Marvel comic, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe #1 , Sue of the Fantastic Four uses her powers to
blow up Deadpool s head. As she turns away, Deadpool was able to regrow his head and stab her from
behind (Bunn). Also, in the Marvel comic, Deadpool: Suicide Kings , the Punisher is able to cut off
both of Deadpool s arms and even decapitate him. Right as Daredevil and Spider man jump in to stop
the Punisher, Deadpool was able to escape the scene regenerated of any injuries (Barbieri, Benson,
Crystal). Deadpool was able to regenerate all limbs and organs in a matter of seconds to save his life.
This nails the idea that Deadpool is in fact, immortal. Some of the most strategic heroes and villains of
the Marvel Universe have not been successful in killing Deadpool. Deathstroke, on the other hand, can
regenerate health, but it does not allow him to regrow limbs unlike the far superior capabilities of
Deadpool. As seen on the television show Arrow, Deathstroke was shot in the eye with Green Arrow s
Arrow. Later on in the seasons, Deathstroke never regrows that eye and uses an eye patch (CW). If
any serious injuries are inflicted on Deathstroke s limbs or organs, it could mean the end of his life.
One quick stab to the heart with Deadpool s sword would kill Deathstroke. This further concludes that
in a deathmatch involving Deadpool vs. Deathstroke, the one to survive would be

The Pitfalls Of Plastic Surgery Summary
In The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery, by Camille Paglia, she argues that American surgeons are being too
narrow minded with their work because they use the same models as a representation of what their
clients can look like. She suggests that getting plastic surgery has become such a normal thing in
America and that society pushes women to get work done in order to get that perfect look. Paglia also
points out that plastic surgery has leveled the playing field with wives and their husbands mistresses
(694). Also, she believes that plastic surgery is not only critical in keeping a job, but also in keeping a
relationship. Although I agree with some of Paglia s arguments, I view some of the issues differently
such as, needing plastic surgery to keep a marriage, that plastic surgery is for non intellectuals, that
Hollywood s environment encourages women to change their looks, and that nothing good can come
out of plastic surgery.
Over time, many wives would have to compete with younger women that had a better physical
appearance than them, thus, causing many wives to get plastic surgery so they would not lose their
husband to younger women. Paglia criticizes the idea of women getting plastic surgery in order to
keep their husbands when saying, In the post 1960s culture of easy divorce on demand, middle aged
women have found themselves competing with nubile women in their 20s, who are being scooped up
as trophy second wives by ambitious men having a midlife crisis. Cosmetic

The Artist Pablo Picasso
The artist Pablo Picasso is quite possibly one of the most famous artists to ever live. While he was one
of the greatest painters, he was also a man of many talents. He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker,
ceramicist and stage designer. Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, as
well as the co founder of Cubism. His creativity, empathy, and mastery in the arts has led him to
become such a revolutionary artist. He devoted his life to painting and artistic production for the
simple fact of wanting to contribute to modern art in the 20th century. Picasso was born Pablo Diego
José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad
Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso on October 25th, 1881 in Málaga, Spain. Picasso s parents were
Don José Ruiz Blasco and Doña María Picasso y López. Picasso s father was a painter and art teacher.
Picasso was introduced to art by his father. Picasso showed a passion and displayed a prodigious talent
for drawing at an early age. His father decided to formally train him, at the age of seven, in the art of
oil painting and figure drawing. Picasso was a precocious boy whose budding talent grew to
overshadow that of his father. By the time he was 13.
The painting, Les Demoiselles d Avignon, was painted by Picasso in the year 1907 and is the most
famous example of cubism painting, as it is considered the first cubist piece of artwork. With this
piece Picasso marked an extensive break from the traditional characteristics of painting, he abandoned
all aspects of traditional art with this piece. He veered far from the representation and form often seen
in traditional art at the time. He depicted five naked women prostitutes in a brothel, but the women
were far from realistic. Picasso had drawn them nothing like the traditional paintings of women. Their
bodies were made up of flat, splintered planes rather than rounded volumes, their eyes were drawn
lopsided, and their faces were off putting. With this painting Picasso did things that no other artist had
contemplated at the time. This visual violent piece evokes and liberates eroticism. This piece and its
unbinding desire was unprecedented in art and in the culture of that

Return From The Inn
Part of the Permanent Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pieter Brueghel the Younger s
painting Return from the Inn made around 1620, illustrates an outdoor winter landscape of rural
peasant life in early seventeenth century Belgium. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels, Belgium, Pieter
Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of the famous
sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke van Aelstv
(Artnet, 2016). Following the passing of both of his parents, Brueghel the Younger and his siblings
Marie and Jan went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst, a well established painter of
watercolors. It was her who introduced Brueghel the Younger to painting. ... Show more content on

At first contact with the painting, my eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the painting where
a dominant figure of a man is highlighted not only by his large size, but also by his bright red jacket
which invokes a strong presence in the painting. In contrast, the other peasant like characters wear
muted, dark colors while the child s clothing in the far bottom left of the painting is almost
indecipherable among the dark tree trunk. The use of the primary color red at the center of the painting
emphasizes a sense of tension, urgency and motion (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002, p. 29). However, I
also observed the emanating warm palette of colors associated with this Flemish renaissance era
(Pastro, 2005, p. 51). The colors are cozy and reassuring. In truth, the blue sky, light ochre buildings
and the terracotta colored church, all covered with crisp white snow gives the painting its arresting
quality, presenting a peaceful winter country scene. Overall, the painting presents a wide range of
values and tones of colours. For instance, shades of yellow and gray are strategically painted onto the
snow to represent the shoe prints of the characters. Interestingly, unlike his father, Pieter Brueghel the
Younger depicted detailed objects in the painting through the use of representational shapes. In these
artwork, the emphasis is on the realistic presentation of the subject matter. The people, objects, or
landscape look very real and may be considered an imitation of nature (Herberholz, Herberholz,
2002c, p. 90). In fact, artists frequently use realistic shapes in a two dimensional artwork to represent
three dimensional object forms that they see in the natural world (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002b, p.
34). In addition, the actions of the prominent figures give the painting a series of clear lines that are
sharp and even perhaps violent. In the book Artworks for

Reintroduction of Wolves at Yellowstone Park Introduction While highly controversial, the
reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone Park has provided many beneficial ecological changes to the
entire parks ecosystem. After a nearly 70 year absence, in January of 1995, 14 wolves from separate
packs were captured in the Canadian Rockies and transported to Yellowstone National Park in the
states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho (Sanders par. 2). The Canis Lupus or more commonly known

5). While in the acclimation pens the wolves were fed a diet of elk and other road kill with wolves
typically consuming 21 to 32 pounds of meat in a single feeding. In March of 1995, three of the packs
were released in Yellowstone, but with one issue; the wolves refused to exit through the gate because
they had associated it with humans, forcing the park rangers to cut a hole in the side of the enclosure
for them to escape (Sanders par. 11). Once the wolves were released two of the packs left the park and
set up their territory leaving only one group initially setting up inside the park. On May 3, 1995
female wolf number nine gave birth to eight puppies, the first wolves to be born in the park in nearly
70 years. The mother and pups were recaptured and taken back to the acclimation pen, until the pups
were weaned (Sanders par. 15). The reason for this recapture was because at this time, this wolf and
her eight pups counted for almost 50% of the park s wolf population. Since this time there have been
no other human interventions preferring to let nature take its course on the population. In 1996 1997 a
second group of wolves was captured and brought to Yellowstone for introduction via soft release with
two more acclimation pens being built, bringing the total to four. In the winter of 1997 1998 the
reintroduction of wolves was stopped due to the high success of the wolf packs breeding and the pups
surviving on their own. The breeding

Alternative Rock Music
Music junkies, concert connoisseurs, and vinyl vigilantes everywhere need to know about the
similarities and differences between the alternative rock and indie rock genres. The genres alternative
and indie are terms sometimes used interchangeably, but their origins are indeed differing. There has
been a varying progression of media platforms used to listen to these genres among the past few
decades due to society s social and economic changes. In terms of instrumental progressions and
technological buildups in the music world, the instruments and stylings used to define these genres has
changed as well. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, alternative rock is defined as a style of
rock music characterized as unconventional, or outside the mainstream which resonated powerfully
with a generation weathering an economic recession. Conversely, Oxford explains the term indie as

I would choose to define alternative rock as music that has heavy metal influenced rhythms, with the
use of electric guitars and bass drums, but conveys a lighter, upbeat feel, and uses meaningful lyrics.
Alternative rock emerged in the late 80 s and early 90 s when the United States was facing an
economic recession and in a post war state. The songs alternative rock artists wrote during this time
tended to be more melancholy in sound, and carry out the use of lyrics about the struggles society as a
whole, and the artists as individuals were facing due to this social and economic decline. These lyrics
were relatable for listeners and adequately helped them cope with the strife. These artists, more often

Courage Vs Moral Courage
We find it easier, in these confused times, to admire physical bravery than moral courage the courage
of the life of the mind, or of public figures. ( Salmon Rushdie, 2013 ) The question we all need to
answer or ask is, do we or do we not? I strongly believe this is true, because we as people of these
times don t want to hear about politicians, we like to hear and learn about people being brave, and
saving others from harmful events that happens in everyday life. There are no Gandhis, no Lincolns
anymore. One man s hero ( Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro) is another s villain. We no longer easily agree
on what it means to be good, or principled, or brave. ( Salmon Rushdie, 2013 ) My three main reasons
for believing this is true is Some Profiles of Courage by Shane Lopez , a video called Physical
Courage v.s. Moral Courage 755 x 5 Squat , and my current event on Hurricane Harvey. From ancient
to present times, this disposition to act appropriately in situations involving fear and confidence in the
face of physical danger seems to be universally valued. ( Shane Lopez, P. 5 ) This is saying that when
people show physical bravery they are valued worldwide by everyone who knows what they done.
Shane Lopez tells us all the categories of courage, but physical courage/bravery is seen as more
courageous than moral courage. People these days don t care about a politician standing up for his
beliefs, but what we do want to hear about is a man in a cowboy hat that vaults

Psychology And The Legal System. Paper 1. With Recent...
Psychology and the Legal System
Paper 1 With recent legislative issues making the news, one topic that has received a great deal of
attention is that of indeterminate sentencing. This is the imposition of a sentence with no mandatory
release date or set period of sentence to be served. Instead, one s sentence length is determined by the
inmate s conduct while in prison. Upon successful completion of requirements the inmate may be
returned to society, but it is possible that they will be kept behind bars for the remainder of his/her
natural life. There are many issues that have come to light with indeterminate and determinate
sentencing, such as how successful was the inmate? Is there really rehabilitation for sex offenders or
drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with indeterminate sentencing is that it often puts too much power into the hands of the
parole board which then can lead to arbitrary and discriminatory results. It has been seen that
minorities and prisoners without connections receive overly harsh decisions of the parole boards while
less deserving offenders are being released early.(Portman, 2017) Even with some of the issues at
hand indeterminate sentencing is making a comeback. This is now happening even more as our
prisons are becoming overcrowded. In turn, allowing more room for judicial or parole board
discretion. Prosecutors are exercising discretion when they decide which of many arrests to charge and
for what particular crime. Juries exercise discretion in not convicting defendants who killed under
circumstances that may have justified their actions. A jury may opt to exercise discretion when it
deliberates the fate of the alleged perpetrator. Parole boards also have the opportunity to excise
discretion when they decide whether to commute a death sentence to life imprisonment.(Greene, E.,
Heilbrun, K. 2014 pg. 10 11) This is being seen in many states where rehabilitation is available and
viewed as a reasonable attainable outcome for offenders. Determinate sentencing began to spread
widely during the 1970s and 1980s and is now the rule in many states. (Portman, 2017) In the late
1970s, a rising crime rate, concern over individual rights, and a distrust of the government in the wake

John Irving s Cider House Rules
Introduction
Imagine being told that you do not have the right to choose what you do with your own body. You are
presented with a situation that you are not mentally, physically, or financially prepared for, but you are
told that you are not allowed an opinion that could change the outcome. You are forced to deal with it,
ruin your life for the next eighteen years because you made a mistake and you do not have the option
of fixing it. In the novel Cider House Rules, published in 1985, John Irving discusses this topic of the
right to choose and how it affects those who are denied it or given it through the choice of abortion.
Through formal style, third person point of view, powerful dialogue, moving situations, and two
different views on this discussion, Irving explains that abortion should be legal because it provides
women with the right to choose.
Style
In his novel, John Irving uses formal diction to help convey his message that abortion should be legal.
By utilizing a more proper tone, he presents his argument objectively, thereby making it more
effective. This is seen most often in the dialogue of the characters, such as Homer and Dr. Larch, the
main protagonists. Their speech patterns do not fully match up with other characters presented in the
book, but rather they have a more educated way of speech. This stems from Larch s background, with
his education and medical knowledge giving him the opportunity to learn how to speak in a more
sophisticated manner. Homer,

Semantic And Semantics
1.1. Statement of the problem.
English is the language commonly used in the world. In the trend of globalization today, the

If learners want to learn better English, they not only develop skills: listening, speaking, reading,

The Charter At Suffolk Speech And Hearing Center
The covenant not to compete that Ms. Rice signed as a part of her employment contract at Suffolk
Speech and Hearing Center ( Suffolk Speech ) is most likely going to be found enforceable. As found
in Technical Aid Corp v. Allen, there is a three prong test to determine whether or not a restrictive
covenant is reasonable and therefore enforceable. 591 A.2d 262, 265 66 (N.H. 1991). The first being,
is the restriction greater than is necessary to protect the legitimate interests of the employer. Id.
Secondly, does the restriction impose an undue hardship on the employee. Id. at 266. And lastly, is the
restriction injurious to the public. Id. For the purposes of this memo, only the first two elements will
be analyzed as the third has already been found to be a non issue. Because the covenant that Ms. Rice
signed at the start of her employment at Suffolk Speech was reasonable in that it protects Suffolk
speech from competition in an appropriate surrounding area that does not pose an undue hardship, it
will be very difficult for the court to deem the covenant unenforceable. The first issue that must go
satisfied or unsatisfied is whether or not the restriction from the covenant not to compete was greater
than necessary to protect to legitimate interests of Suffolk Speech. Id. The court must evaluate a few
things when determining whether this element is satisfied or not. Important factors to determine if the
restriction is greater than necessary includes the size of the company,

Individualism And Society In Anthem By Ayn Rand
Society in a Different World
Have you ever thought of living in a place where everyone is the same and no one is different? Boring,
right. In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand fully expresses her thoughts about the role of individualism and
society. Anthem is a dystopian novella, written in 1937 and published in England in 1938. The book is
about a society, in which there is no I and only we is allowed. The dictatorship of Anthem tries to keep
the members of society brainwashed by focusing on the importance of obedience and equality which
justifies restricting people from pursuing individual freedom and limiting their knowledge and
vocabulary. Anthem is a critique of the political movements of Fascism and Communism in Europe
during the 1930 s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you. (Rand 22). In the book, Rand
describes how the Council keeps its subjects manipulated, maintaining obedience through their strict
teaching. The main character Equality 7 2521 demonstrates how people are not allowed to follow their
own path and are victims of a repressive system, which rewards complacency and discourages
freethinking. In this society everyone must be just like everyone else. According to Equality 7 2521,
individuals have no identity of their own. In this society no one is allowed to choose what they do
with their lives, or even to think about what they want to do in the future. The Council of Vocations
punishes Equality 7 2521 for being different, which means being intelligent and loving science.
Instead of being made a scholar, which is what he really wants, Equality 7 2521 is made a street
sweeper. The irony is that Equality 7 2521 would better serve society as a scholar because of his great
intellectual gifts, but that would make individuals capable of distinguishing and separating themselves
from the Council. In another instance, Rand emphasizes the idea of control over knowledge and
vocabulary since We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One,
indivisible and forever (Rand 19). All names are

What Is John Rawls Notion Of Justice
If the Ancient Athenian democracy upheld John Rawls conception of justice, Socrates would most
likely face a similar plight because Rawls notion of justice states that rules put forth should not be
twisted or discarded to one s own advantage. Socrates beliefs concur with the idea that if there is a
consensus among rational people on a decision and everyone has made in advance a firm commitment
to facilitate the law, then no one can tailor the canons of a legitimate complaint to a certain condition.
These ideas bear resemblance to that of Socrates because he believed while people have some basic
rights as to what they can do, he feels that he is obligated to do as his city government commands him
to do due to the fact he thought Athenian

Reasons For The Collapse Of The Han And Mayan Empires
A number of complex and enduring empires have dominated large parts of Afro Eurasia, and Meso
America. Among these were the Han Empire in China, the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean Basin,
and the Maya in Meso America. These empires had wealth, power, and they are a vast size, but they
all suffered their unfortunate collapse. There are multiple factors that contribute to the collapse of
these empires such as warfare, taxes, the environment, problems with the government, religion, and
shortage of resources like food and water. The reasons for the collapse of the Han and the Mayan
empires are very similar. However, there are also some striking differences of the reasons why these
empires collapsed. The Han Empire s disintegration happened because of 3 reasons: warfare,
governmental problems, taxes, and shortage of resources like food and water. Warfare had an impact
on the failure of the Han Empire because they needed a lot of strong and efficient armies which led to
the need for manpower, food, horses, and weapons. These needs couldn t be fulfilled because the taxes
were so high (governmental problem) that the peasants had no way of paying their taxes resulting
many joining rich land owning generals lands which means that these peasants are now under their
command. Since these peasants left their land to join those that were rich, their plots of ... Show more

They are warfare, shortages of food and water, and governmental problems. Warfare is a problem for
these empires since it is mainly the start of more issues like government problems and riots which will
eventually cause the destruction of the empire. To further explain, in Document 9, it states, With entire
communities engaged in warfare, fields were left fallow and water control systems deteriorated. This
means that war changed everyone s lives and made everyone not care about their community resulting

Themes Of Fiddler On The Roof
The classic tale of a Jewish family s struggle in a Russian society that is growing more and more
hostile, Fiddler on the Roof is rich in historical and ethnic detail, with a central theme that crosses the
barriers of race and class to become a classic musical that draws in audiences worldwide. Fiddler on
the Roof is a favorite among many musical theatre lovers because of its humor, inspiring plot, and
underlying theme of faith and tradition.
Fiddler on the Roof is set in a Jewish community in pre revolutionary Russia, where every decision
made by the residents of Anatevka, Ukraine, is centered in community and religious tradition. For
poor dairy farmer Tevye and his wife Golde, these traditions include getting the town matchmaker,
Yente, to find their five daughters suitable and wealthy husbands. Tzeitel, who is not yet twenty, doesn
t like that Yente only sets her up with old men, and is secretly in love with a poor tailor named Motel.
Motel doesn t believe Tevye would approve of a union between him and Tzeitel due to the economic
status of both families, and because their union had not been arranged by the matchmaker. Another
daughter, Hodel, understands the importance of these traditions better than her older sister Tzeitel.
Hodel has grown attached to the idea of marrying the rabbi s son, because of what he is, rather than
who he is. Younger sister Chava hopes for someone to love in the future, but for now is content to
focus on her love of reading. The approach of

How Does Mark Twain Use Ordinary American Speech
The novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn implicitly reflects the author s real life and society.
The book s author, Mark Twain is a white owning a few slaves. Despite the fact that he is already in a
social class of being equally treated, he criticizes American society throughout this novel. Based on
Biography of Mark Twain and the text, they infer that Mark Twain mostly use ordinary American
Speech. Taking a look at chapter four, there is a part of hard understanding English Yo ole father doan

of comprehensible English, Mark Twain s use of ordinary American speech demonstrates that he
considered deeply about every aspect of society and even showed how some particular people are
tormented due to contemporary society characteristics. For example, slaves are key characters in the
whole story. Mark Twain s use of ordinary speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, at the beginning of chapter one, Mark Twain humorously illustrates of Miss Watson

Don t scrunch up like that, Huckleberry set up straight; and pretty soon she would say, Don t gap and
stretch like that, Huckleberry why don t you try to behave? indirectly shows that society in which the
author lives is largely affected by hierarchical class. Moreover, the quote Tom and I found the money
that the robbers hid in the cave, and it made us rich. We got six thousand dollars apiece all gold. talks
about the childish view on money and this implicates that money makes up most part of society. In
other words, a hierarchical society was also significantly affected by people s income or how much
money they possess. Even though the quote previously mentioned is about children s pure opinion, it
somehow shows that money plays a pivotal role in composing the whole

BENEFIT COST ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL PROGRAMS
CHILD, YOUTH, AND FAMILY PROGRAMS
MAYA BOZKURT
SPRING 2017
Abstract
This paper examines the benefit cost analyses of youth, children, and family programs by means of
investigating previous studies in the area and comparing benefit cost analyses of different programs.
Benefit cost analysis (BCA) of these programs differ from BCA of infrastructure, health or
environmental programs due to the mental and intangible consequences. This paper addresses the
main principles applied in BCA and procedural steps. It also compares BCA of programs conducted
by nonprofit and government organizations. The strength and challenges of BCAs in family, child and
youth programs are also assessed. I reached to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the public programs, BCA is recommended by legislators. According to Circular A 94, for formal
assessments of federal programs BCA is recommended since it is a more comprehensive method than
the cost effectiveness analysis (Circular A 94, 2016, pg.1)
Social programs consist of many different kind of programs including general welfare, education,
housing, senior programs, social security benefits, health, youth, children, family, etc. Since social
programs refer to a very broad category, I limited my study to youth, child, and family programs. In
this paper I will explain the literature review I made on BCA applications of youth, children, and
family programs. In the first part of my study, I will give some background information about BCA of
such programs. In the latter part, I will explain how BCA is applied to those programs. At the third
part of my paper, I will give examples from BCA done before and will compare these analyses. The
next part of my paper will consist of challenges that researchers face during the BCA of youth, child,
and family programs and recommendations from some different studies. Finally, I will summarize my
findings.
2. Background
Decision makers attach particular importance to BCA for the choices between the youth, child, and
family programs as time passes (Karoly,2008, pg.iii). Implementing social programs more

On May 1966, Soldiers of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) had arrived in
South Vietnam with the main force joining in June. Within two months the battalion had found
themselves engaged with one of the most brutal battles fought by Australians during the Vietnam War.
By August 1966 the Australian task force posted at Nui Dat was only three months old. Concerned by
the establishment of the large enemy presence in their midst, the Vietnam Cong decided to inflict an
early defeat upon the Australians. Days prior to the battle radio signals that indicated the presence of
strong Viet Cong forces within 5 kilometers of the base were reported, but patrols could find nothing.

Comparing Kant s Argument Of Pareto Efficiency
In assessing arrangements to solve the problem of free riding, economists claim to be guided by the
principle of Pareto efficiency. That is, they claim to put forward arrangements that will make at least
some people better off without any detriment to others, in terms of their own happiness. If they are
serious about this efficiency criterion then any proposed arrangement must surely accord with the
preferences of the people involved, as revealed through their actual behaviour. It follows that the
ultimate test of any allegedly Pareto efficient arrangement must surely be to convince all of the parties
affected that they are better off or at least, no worse off under the proposed arrangement. Indeed, the
consent and agreement of all parties

Wedding Crashers By David Dobkin
If you re a fan of romantic comedy films then Wedding Crashers might just be the film for you!
Wedding Crashers is a popular film from 2005 directed by David Dobkin. The top stars in Wedding
Crashers include Owen Wilson as John Beckwith, Vince Vaughn as Jeremy Grey, and Rachel
McAdams as Claire. The movie begins as the main characters (John and Vince) who are divorce
mediators in Washington D.C. go to crash a wedding held for the U.S. Secretary of Treasury s
daughter. While at the wedding Jeremey ends up finding another sister of the bride, Gloria Cleary and
ends up hooking up with her at the wedding. While Jeremey is occupied with Gloria, John also finds
himself another girl, Claire who has a boyfriend.

John and Jeremy get invited to the Cleary s mansion after crashing the wedding and end up staying the
night. At a point during the night, Kathleen Cleary, the wife of William Cleary, seduces John, making
him grasp her breast. The second affair occurs that same night when Gloria s brother, Todd enters
Jeremy s room and jumps on top of him and asks him to play tummy sticks. The plot twists in the
movie can also be seen when the wedding crashers get exposed by Sack and their real identities are
shown to the Clearys. After being exposed to the Clearys, John and Jeremy were told to leave by the
William Cleary. Jeremy would secretly continue his relationship with Gloria while John would go on a
downward spiral of depression. Wedding Crashers does not have a lot of history in the movie due to it
being a strong comedic film with a hint of romance in it but it does reflect human nature. Throughout
the film, people are generally happy such as weddings and affairs, but even with happiness comes
downfalls such as when John and Jeremy get exposed and have to leave the Clearys or when John
crashes a funeral.
Wedding Crashers lacks in the intelligence value as well as the director s craft value. The main focus
of the movie is crashing a wedding so for special effects there isn t a lot you can do. The only
pyrotechnics in the movie is when the men all go hunting and there is gun shots and the gun shots hit a
mannequin or stunt double and rip holes in the pants. The movie in

Research Paper On Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats
Why Dogs Make Better Pets Than Cats. Dogs and cats are most pets that are seen with their owner.
These two animals make good pets to have. Dogs are physical and fun animals that runs with a flock
of their inheritance. Cats are feminine and spoil animals that like to have its way. When it comes down
to choose the better pet, dogs are better pets than cats. Some pet owners think dog and cat food the
same. Dogs have better food to eat because the type of dogs I like can eat some of the same food as I.
Dogs can eat a variety of food either if it s home cooked of store bought dog food. I can feed a dog

Who Was The Most Responsible For The Tragic Events In Macbeth
Macdeath
You probably don t know who was most responsible for the tragic events that occur in the play. Well
you re in luck, I m going to show you who is responsible for all the tragic events that occur. I believe
that Macbeth is the cause of all the tragic events that occur in the play.
Macbeth causes the first tragic event in this play, which is the murder of King Duncan.
The text states, And on thy blade and dudgeon, gouts of blood (Shakespeare II.1.45). This text is
telling us that there is blood on Macbeth s dagger and who s blood would that be? You guessed it King
Duncan s blood. This is what started the whole blood thirsty and power thing for
Macbeth because soon after Macbeth found bloody daggers on the guards Macbeth killed them. The

Some more time passes and Macbeth gets the idea that he should have Macduff s family murdered so
he calls more assassins and has them kill Macduff s wife and children which again are innocent
people. The text states, He has killed me, mother./ Run away , I pray you,/ [Lady

ready to kill Macbeth, so he gets his army to go to Macbeth s castle. Macbeth and
Macduff end up duking it out at the end. As always the good prevails and Macduff slayed
Macbeth and chopped his head off, which by the way is another tragic event.

Women s Equality And Equality
Today Women in America can scarcely imagine not having the right to vote or choose a career or
attend a university. Young women in college take these opportunities and rights for granted, but it hasn
t been that long ago in human history that women found themselves in a very patriarchal, male
dominated world. The rise of feminism in the United States has gradually brought about women s
equality in just the past century and for that we women are very grateful. But are there exceptions to
full equality and should there be complete equality in all situations?
What is Feminism? To many it seems to refer to a radical group of women who call out any man who
treats women differently then he would treat another man. To others it is the righteous call to women s
equality, discouraging the disparity between the sexes. But what is its literal definition? The actual
definition of feminism is: The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.
It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. (1.) Using that definition
many more people would consider themselves feminists, but how have the values for women changed
because of them and have the changes made things better or worse for women and for society? If
women were given the exact same rights as men or were accommodated by society in all situations to
be equal, what would change? For women to be completely equal in the United States some standards
would have to be

Child Sleep Research Papers
Bedtime is one of the most important times of the day for a child. Not only does sleep give children
the child a chance to rest after the day s many activities, but it also allows time for their brain to rest
and absorb the material learned throughout the day. It comes as no surprise that child sleep disorders
can be one of the most stressful issues for parents to deal with. It is important for parents to know that
sleep disorders usually do not affect the child s regular growth and development. They could,
however, be a sign of a behavioral issue, anxiety, or other physiological issues. When it comes to child
sleep disorders, here is a list of what parents need to know: Look for obvious signs that your child isn t
sleeping enough. The symptoms include excessive yawning, drooping eyelids, fatigue, and attention
deficit. These signs all indicate that your child is not sleeping well due to either physiological or
anxiety problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you in seeking treatment. Here are a few of the most common child sleep disorders: Pediatric
obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when the child s throat relaxes to the point of closing, causing
them to stop breathing for a period of a few seconds. Snoring is a common problem associated with
this condition. Insomnia. Children can have sleep onset association type childhood insomnia, in which
the child awakens frequently and for long periods during the night and may need the parent s
assistance to go back to sleep, or limit setting type childhood insomnia, in which the child may refuse
to go to bed and greatly delay returning to sleep when awoken. Restless Leg Syndrome. This
syndrome is characterized by a twitching or tingling in the leg muscles while lying down. A child may
move excessively at night to lessen the annoyance because movement is often the only way to relieve
the unpleasant sensation.

Types Of E Learning Synchronous And Asynchronous
Through research I have learned that there are two types of e learning synchronous and asynchronous.
Synchronous referring to a specific hour where both parties meet for the course. Asynchronous is
using computer sources for course material and contact with instructor is done through online
programs (Bubatu). Synchronous it the type of training one would expect from a traditional classroom
training. However, today s traditional classroom training also incorporates e learning tools. Whether
the instructor is using a power point presentation, video, or material found on a website, it s important
to recognize that technology has become very important for classroom training. Besides my high
school years, I have yet to see an educator teach with only a book in hand. As technology changes, so
does asynchronous training. Newer methods of online training become available every day. E
Learning has been around for decades. Knowing that e learning is constantly changing before our
eyes, let s look at how e learning has evolved over time. According to Nicoleta Florea, There are three
generations of e learning. First generation referring to print based correspondence. Second generation
refers to the use of multimedia an instructor available. Third generation is training done by
individuals/teams with little to no guidance from an educator . First generation training was successful
but obviously had its downfalls. Print based training gave individuals access to training but no one to

  • 2. The Mead s Milkweed Family Name Is Asclepiadaceae The Mead s milkweed family name is Asclepiadaceae (milkweeds). Mead Milkweed is a nonwoody plant with smooth stem, and has milky sap. This is a short lived annual growth. It blooms in late May to mid June with one or two clusters that produce roughly five fourteen flowers per cluster. The flowers are yellow green or creamy green with purple tints. However, the seeds mature from July until around October. A single plant may have multiple stems, which is frequently being mistaken for individual plants. It takes on average fifteen years for it to grow and develop into a mature adult. After it reaches the adult stage, every stem produces flowers for two to three years. They can grow to be one or two feet tall. Habitats include slightly moist to dry tall grass and upland prairies. Soil conditions in these habitats range from acid and nutrient poor in Missouri. Conservation efforts include delaying haying until September, periodic burning of prairies, and rotational grazing. In the past, Mead s milkweed was throughout much of Missouri. It is presently found in the Osage Plains region and the St. Francois mountains region of the Ozarks. Adaptations allow the species to change and adjust slowly to the environment for survival. The sap of most milkweed plants is toxic. This prevents the plants from being eaten. Some insects, however, can eat milkweeds or sip on the milkweed nectar, which is not toxic to them. Many populations contain genetically identical plants from being ... • 3. Novalis Y El Romanticismo Novalis y la ética romántica I. Novalis. P. • 4. Asian Women Nevertheless, many Asian women in particular struggle to adopt status within the society as they are not heteronormative enough. There are many reasons why Asian women perform cosmetic surgery in order to look white in an attempt to attain the framework of heteronormativity. One of the reasons why Asian women want to look white is through gaining benefit in finding a partner. Based on a study of 692 undergraduates, the study has found that white women are more likely to be asked out compared to non white women. White women have a staggering percentage of 40 percent while non white women have roughly about 28 percent (Knox Schacht, 2012). Another study conducted from Feliciano, Robnett, and Komaie (2009) also found that men of color with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media seeks to reinforce the framework of heteronormativity through the lifestyle held by hegemonic social norms. The public s attitude to cosmetic surgery is heavily influenced by the crucial role of the sociocultural in particular to the promotion of the body and beauty in the mass media (Moon, 2015). Within the global media, the image of Asian women is fixed towards depicting social qualities as exotic, feminine, and seductive. Due to these depictions of Asian women in the media, Asian women are seen as dolls. In addition, Asian women are not portrayed as humans compared to white women (Hall, 1995). This negative image of observing Asian women as inferior humans further affect Asian women status within the concept of heteronormativity. Therefore, Asian women perform cosmetic surgery to look white in order to alter their image and gain their power. The role of the mass media contributes strong self images that correspond with the consumer culture, in regard to the desire to buy the ideal beauty commodity (Askegaard, Gertsen, Langer, 2015). Since western beauty is strongly penetrating within almost every edge of the media in Asia. The beauty ideal of Asia is largely westernized through the extent where most models or celebrities are western or look western. With this implementation, Western and domestic models that are embodied to western features are heavily promoted along the goods in the Asian Market (Kim, 2003). According to Li, Min, and Belk (2008), having pale white skin is perceived as a symbol of flawless, luxury, and prestige in the Asian cultures. Whiteness is a source of cultural capital that is related with upper class images (Bourdieu, 1984). In addition, Asian celebrities with fair skin tie their achievement with whiteness in order to implicit their success ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Armenian Genocide Essay The world becomes a better place when there is humanity. Humanity exists when there are people who have the desire to give, instead of take. When these generous people give without the expectation of taking back, the world automatically offers them the better. There was poverty in all the villages of Armenia. Armenian Christians were continuously under attacks. The attacks against Christian Armenians occurred throughout the year 1915. This is the age that is well known for the Armenian Genocide, which was carried out by the Ottoman Turks. Escaping the Ottoman forces, my grandmother, Sosek Boghosian, found herself as a refuge in Iraq. Horrific acts continued to be committed to my grandmother s descendants. Many people had no place to live or sleep. I have interviewed my grandmother to make myself more educated about the Armenian Genocide. She contributed to the Armenian culture in many different ways. Mrs. Boghosian studied about the genocide from her beloved mother. Following her mother s footsteps, she became more generous day by day. She contributed to the Armenian Culture by teaching her children and grandchildren how to help one another. This was followed by donating food, clothes and shelter for the kids in orphanages. These unfortunate children lost their guardians in the genocide, along with 1.5 million other deaths. The Armenian people lived in a very safe environment until some obstacles beset them. Deadpool (of the Marvel Universe) can be classified as the most powerful of all mutants, whereas, Deathstroke (of the DC universe) makes it to the top 5 list of strongest metahumans in his own reality. Both characters were products of a scientific lab gone wrong. If both of their universes were to merge, who would triumph in a battle between these two iconic characters? Deadpool and Deathstroke are similar in terms of being anti heroes, however, Deadpool is superior to Deathstroke because he has more athletic capabilities, has a variety of combat methods, and his chances of survival are higher. However, unlike Wolverine, Deadpool s health regeneration is quick enough that he is quite literally immortal. In the Marvel comic, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe #1 , Sue of the Fantastic Four uses her powers to blow up Deadpool s head. As she turns away, Deadpool was able to regrow his head and stab her from behind (Bunn). Also, in the Marvel comic, Deadpool: Suicide Kings , the Punisher is able to cut off both of Deadpool s arms and even decapitate him. Right as Daredevil and Spider man jump in to stop the Punisher, Deadpool was able to escape the scene regenerated of any injuries (Barbieri, Benson, Crystal). Deadpool was able to regenerate all limbs and organs in a matter of seconds to save his life. This nails the idea that Deadpool is in fact, immortal. Some of the most strategic heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe have not been successful in killing Deadpool. Deathstroke, on the other hand, can regenerate health, but it does not allow him to regrow limbs unlike the far superior capabilities of Deadpool. As seen on the television show Arrow, Deathstroke was shot in the eye with Green Arrow s Arrow. Later on in the seasons, Deathstroke never regrows that eye and uses an eye patch (CW). If any serious injuries are inflicted on Deathstroke s limbs or organs, it could mean the end of his life. One quick stab to the heart with Deadpool s sword would kill Deathstroke. This further concludes that in a deathmatch involving Deadpool vs. Deathstroke, the one to survive would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Pitfalls Of Plastic Surgery Summary In The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery, by Camille Paglia, she argues that American surgeons are being too narrow minded with their work because they use the same models as a representation of what their clients can look like. She suggests that getting plastic surgery has become such a normal thing in America and that society pushes women to get work done in order to get that perfect look. Paglia also points out that plastic surgery has leveled the playing field with wives and their husbands mistresses (694). Also, she believes that plastic surgery is not only critical in keeping a job, but also in keeping a relationship. Although I agree with some of Paglia s arguments, I view some of the issues differently such as, needing plastic surgery to keep a marriage, that plastic surgery is for non intellectuals, that Hollywood s environment encourages women to change their looks, and that nothing good can come out of plastic surgery. Over time, many wives would have to compete with younger women that had a better physical appearance than them, thus, causing many wives to get plastic surgery so they would not lose their husband to younger women. Paglia criticizes the idea of women getting plastic surgery in order to keep their husbands when saying, In the post 1960s culture of easy divorce on demand, middle aged women have found themselves competing with nubile women in their 20s, who are being scooped up as trophy second wives by ambitious men having a midlife crisis. • 8. The Artist Pablo Picasso The artist Pablo Picasso is quite possibly one of the most famous artists to ever live. While he was one of the greatest painters, he was also a man of many talents. He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer. Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the co founder of Cubism. His creativity, empathy, and mastery in the arts has led him to become such a revolutionary artist. He devoted his life to painting and artistic production for the simple fact of wanting to contribute to modern art in the 20th century. Picasso was born Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso on October 25th, 1881 in Málaga, Spain. Picasso s parents were Don José Ruiz Blasco and Doña María Picasso y López. Picasso s father was a painter and art teacher. Picasso was introduced to art by his father. Picasso showed a passion and displayed a prodigious talent for drawing at an early age. His father decided to formally train him, at the age of seven, in the art of oil painting and figure drawing. Picasso was a precocious boy whose budding talent grew to overshadow that of his father. By the time he was 13. The painting, Les Demoiselles d Avignon, was painted by Picasso in the year 1907 and is the most famous example of cubism painting, as it is considered the first cubist piece of artwork. With this piece Picasso marked an extensive break from the traditional characteristics of painting, he abandoned all aspects of traditional art with this piece. He veered far from the representation and form often seen in traditional art at the time. He depicted five naked women prostitutes in a brothel, but the women were far from realistic. Picasso had drawn them nothing like the traditional paintings of women. Their bodies were made up of flat, splintered planes rather than rounded volumes, their eyes were drawn lopsided, and their faces were off putting. With this painting Picasso did things that no other artist had contemplated at the time. This visual violent piece evokes and liberates eroticism. This piece and its unbinding desire was unprecedented in art and in the culture of that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Return From The Inn Part of the Permanent Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pieter Brueghel the Younger s painting Return from the Inn made around 1620, illustrates an outdoor winter landscape of rural peasant life in early seventeenth century Belgium. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels, Belgium, Pieter Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of the famous sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke van Aelstv (Artnet, 2016). Following the passing of both of his parents, Brueghel the Younger and his siblings Marie and Jan went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst, a well established painter of watercolors. At first contact with the painting, my eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the painting where a dominant figure of a man is highlighted not only by his large size, but also by his bright red jacket which invokes a strong presence in the painting. In contrast, the other peasant like characters wear muted, dark colors while the child s clothing in the far bottom left of the painting is almost indecipherable among the dark tree trunk. The use of the primary color red at the center of the painting emphasizes a sense of tension, urgency and motion (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002, p. 29). However, I also observed the emanating warm palette of colors associated with this Flemish renaissance era (Pastro, 2005, p. 51). The colors are cozy and reassuring. In truth, the blue sky, light ochre buildings and the terracotta colored church, all covered with crisp white snow gives the painting its arresting quality, presenting a peaceful winter country scene. Overall, the painting presents a wide range of values and tones of colours. For instance, shades of yellow and gray are strategically painted onto the snow to represent the shoe prints of the characters. Interestingly, unlike his father, Pieter Brueghel the Younger depicted detailed objects in the painting through the use of representational shapes. In these artwork, the emphasis is on the realistic presentation of the subject matter. The people, objects, or landscape look very real and may be considered an imitation of nature (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002c, p. 90). In fact, artists frequently use realistic shapes in a two dimensional artwork to represent three dimensional object forms that they see in the natural world (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002b, p. 34). In addition, the actions of the prominent figures give the painting a series of clear lines that are sharp and even perhaps violent. In the book Artworks for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After a nearly 70 year absence, in January of 1995, 14 wolves from separate packs were captured in the Canadian Rockies and transported to Yellowstone National Park in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho (Sanders par. 2). While in the acclimation pens the wolves were fed a diet of elk and other road kill with wolves typically consuming 21 to 32 pounds of meat in a single feeding. In March of 1995, three of the packs were released in Yellowstone, but with one issue; the wolves refused to exit through the gate because they had associated it with humans, forcing the park rangers to cut a hole in the side of the enclosure for them to escape (Sanders par. 11). Once the wolves were released two of the packs left the park and set up their territory leaving only one group initially setting up inside the park. On May 3, 1995 female wolf number nine gave birth to eight puppies, the first wolves to be born in the park in nearly 70 years. The mother and pups were recaptured and taken back to the acclimation pen, until the pups were weaned (Sanders par. 15). The reason for this recapture was because at this time, this wolf and her eight pups counted for almost 50% of the park s wolf population. Since this time there have been no other human interventions preferring to let nature take its course on the population. In 1996 1997 a second group of wolves was captured and brought to Yellowstone for introduction via soft release with two more acclimation pens being built, bringing the total to four. In the winter of 1997 1998 the reintroduction of wolves was stopped due to the high success of the wolf packs breeding and the pups surviving on their own. The breeding ... Alternative Rock Music Music junkies, concert connoisseurs, and vinyl vigilantes everywhere need to know about the similarities and differences between the alternative rock and indie rock genres. The genres alternative and indie are terms sometimes used interchangeably, but their origins are indeed differing. There has been a varying progression of media platforms used to listen to these genres among the past few decades due to society s social and economic changes. In terms of instrumental progressions and technological buildups in the music world, the instruments and stylings used to define these genres has changed as well. • 14. Courage Vs Moral Courage We find it easier, in these confused times, to admire physical bravery than moral courage the courage of the life of the mind, or of public figures. ( Salmon Rushdie, 2013 ) The question we all need to answer or ask is, do we or do we not? I strongly believe this is true, because we as people of these times don t want to hear about politicians, we like to hear and learn about people being brave, and saving others from harmful events that happens in everyday life. There are no Gandhis, no Lincolns anymore. One man s hero ( Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro) is another s villain. We no longer easily agree on what it means to be good, or principled, or brave. ( Salmon Rushdie, 2013 ) My three main reasons for believing this is true is Some Profiles of Courage by Shane Lopez , a video called Physical Courage v.s. Moral Courage 755 x 5 Squat , and my current event on Hurricane Harvey. From ancient to present times, this disposition to act appropriately in situations involving fear and confidence in the face of physical danger seems to be universally valued. • 15. Psychology And The Legal System. Paper 1. With Recent... Psychology and the Legal System Paper 1 With recent legislative issues making the news, one topic that has received a great deal of attention is that of indeterminate sentencing. This is the imposition of a sentence with no mandatory release date or set period of sentence to be served. Instead, one s sentence length is determined by the inmate s conduct while in prison. Upon successful completion of requirements the inmate may be returned to society, but it is possible that they will be kept behind bars for the remainder of his/her natural life. There are many issues that have come to light with indeterminate and determinate sentencing, such as how successful was the inmate? Is there really rehabilitation for sex offenders or drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem with indeterminate sentencing is that it often puts too much power into the hands of the parole board which then can lead to arbitrary and discriminatory results. It has been seen that minorities and prisoners without connections receive overly harsh decisions of the parole boards while less deserving offenders are being released early.(Portman, 2017) Even with some of the issues at hand indeterminate sentencing is making a comeback. This is now happening even more as our prisons are becoming overcrowded. In turn, allowing more room for judicial or parole board discretion. Prosecutors are exercising discretion when they decide which of many arrests to charge and for what particular crime. Juries exercise discretion in not convicting defendants who killed under circumstances that may have justified their actions. A jury may opt to exercise discretion when it deliberates the fate of the alleged perpetrator. Parole boards also have the opportunity to excise discretion when they decide whether to commute a death sentence to life imprisonment.(Greene, E., Heilbrun, K. 2014 pg. 10 11) This is being seen in many states where rehabilitation is available and viewed as a reasonable attainable outcome for offenders. Determinate sentencing began to spread widely during the 1970s and 1980s and is now the rule in many states. • 16. John Irving s Cider House Rules Introduction Imagine being told that you do not have the right to choose what you do with your own body. You are presented with a situation that you are not mentally, physically, or financially prepared for, but you are told that you are not allowed an opinion that could change the outcome. You are forced to deal with it, ruin your life for the next eighteen years because you made a mistake and you do not have the option of fixing it. In the novel Cider House Rules, published in 1985, John Irving discusses this topic of the right to choose and how it affects those who are denied it or given it through the choice of abortion. Through formal style, third person point of view, powerful dialogue, moving situations, and two different views on this discussion, Irving explains that abortion should be legal because it provides women with the right to choose. Style In his novel, John Irving uses formal diction to help convey his message that abortion should be legal. By utilizing a more proper tone, he presents his argument objectively, thereby making it more effective. This is seen most often in the dialogue of the characters, such as Homer and Dr. Larch, the main protagonists. Their speech patterns do not fully match up with other characters presented in the book, but rather they have a more educated way of speech. This stems from Larch s background, with his education and medical knowledge giving him the opportunity to learn how to speak in a more sophisticated manner. Homer, ... In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand fully expresses her thoughts about the role of individualism and society. Anthem is a dystopian novella, written in 1937 and published in England in 1938. The book is about a society, in which there is no I and only we is allowed. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you. (Rand 22). In the book, Rand describes how the Council keeps its subjects manipulated, maintaining obedience through their strict teaching. The main character Equality 7 2521 demonstrates how people are not allowed to follow their own path and are victims of a repressive system, which rewards complacency and discourages freethinking. In this society everyone must be just like everyone else. According to Equality 7 2521, individuals have no identity of their own. In this society no one is allowed to choose what they do with their lives, or even to think about what they want to do in the future. The Council of Vocations punishes Equality 7 2521 for being different, which means being intelligent and loving science. Instead of being made a scholar, which is what he really wants, Equality 7 2521 is made a street sweeper. The irony is that Equality 7 2521 would better serve society as a scholar because of his great intellectual gifts, but that would make individuals capable of distinguishing and separating themselves from the Council. In another instance, Rand emphasizes the idea of control over knowledge and vocabulary since We are one in all and all in one. Among these were the Han Empire in China, the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean Basin, and the Maya in Meso America. These empires had wealth, power, and they are a vast size, but they all suffered their unfortunate collapse. There are multiple factors that contribute to the collapse of these empires such as warfare, taxes, the environment, problems with the government, religion, and shortage of resources like food and water. The reasons for the collapse of the Han and the Mayan empires are very similar. However, there are also some striking differences of the reasons why these empires collapsed. The Han Empire s disintegration happened because of 3 reasons: warfare, governmental problems, taxes, and shortage of resources like food and water. Warfare had an impact on the failure of the Han Empire because they needed a lot of strong and efficient armies which led to the need for manpower, food, horses, and weapons.
