The Fraser Valley in British Columbia is one of the top locations in the world for agriculture due to its rich soil, abundant water, favorable climate, and proximity to urban populations. It produces over 200 commercial products on just 0.16% of Canada's farmland but accounts for 3.7% of the country's gross farm receipts. While 48% of agricultural land is actively farmed, other portions are unavailable, have limited potential, or could be farmed with more support. Meeting the food needs of Metro Vancouver's population would require more land than is currently available in the region.

Food (agriculture) production and distribution is estimated to cause approximately 25% of global warming (UN), which is causing drought in many areas. Agriculture uses 80% of the ground and surface water, increasing the water shortage. AgLantis is creating an urban farm right in the middle of heavy industry and will use hydroponic greenhouse production which yields as much as 40 times the produce using 10% of the water. The farm is on unused public buffer land, uses recycled agricultural grade water and is an innovate, replicable solution that dramatically decreases the carbon and water footprint of food production and distribution. Using recycled water high in nitrogen and phosphorus also eliminates the need for fossil fuel based fertilizers. The UN estimates 40% of agriculture is lost from farm-to-mouth. Growing in urban centers dramatically decreases that loss, much of which is due to long distane transportation.

Farm balances for major nutrients (N, P, K) at crop level (Primary Production Units – PPU) for major crops i.e. banana, sweat potatoes, beans and maize were all negative during the monitoring period, thus indicating a net mining of nutrients through crop harvest.

The event was being hosted by the Vancouver Food Policy Council and Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty. Attendees were asked to bring a dish to share and their own eating utensils as supplies would be limited. The agenda included a traditional welcome, introductions, presentations on indigenous food strategies and the Year of Reconciliation with Aboriginal Peoples, and a facilitated discussion about collaboration and identifying ways to support indigenous food initiatives through the Vancouver Food Strategy.
