VLSI
VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration.This is
the field which involves packing more and more
logic devices into smaller and smaller areas. And it
is the process of creating an integrated circuits
(IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a
single chip.
VLSI CHIP
HISTORY
Vlsi introduced by INTEL in 1970’s.
TYPES OF VLSI (ICS)
There are some type on the basis of no. of transistors:-
 SSI
 MSI
 LSI
 VLSI
 ULSI
VLSI DESIGN FLOW
A design flow of VLSI is the sequence of processes or
steps involved in the making of an integrated
circuit(IC).
VLSI DESIGN FLOW
APPLICATIONS OF VLSI
Daily life Applications:-
 Refrigerator
 Calculator
 Water purifier
 Music player
 Smart watch
 Air conditioner
 Pendrive
 Toaster
 Dish washer
IDEAS
 Any thing we needs chip
 Microprocessor
 Microcontroller
 Memories
 Printer
 Mobile
 Digital security lock
ADVANTAGES
 Reduces the size of circuits.
 Reduces the cost of the devices.
 Increase operating speed of circuits.
 Less power consumption.
 High reliability.
 Occupies less area.
CMOS TECHNOLOGY
 CMOS inverter circuit consists of two MOSFETS
(NMOS and PMOS) series such a way that the P-
channel device has its source connected to +Vpn and the
N-channel device has its source connected to the two
devices are connected together connected together
ground. The gates as the common input and the drains
are as the common output.
 CMOS has the greatest complexity and lowest
packaging density; however, it has important advantages
of high speed and much lower power dissipation.
CMOS INVERTOR
MICROWIND SOFTWARE
 Microwind software is used for layout design of
various circuit.
 Microwind is a windows tool for designing and
simulation microelectronic circuit at layout level.
 Process diffiusion, poly-silicon pads, deep
submicron CMOS design and n-well process.
Microwind desktop
CMOS LAYOUT
 Layout is drawing the masks used in the
manufacturing process. so at the end of the day,
foundry is going to create different mask on the
basis of layout which designer has prepared. so
from foundry side, it doesn’t matter in which
seqence you have design the layout/mask.
CMOS LAYOUT DESIGN
HDL
 HDL stands for hardware description language.
 The current trend is to move away from
proprietary HDLs and towards the two leading
standards,VHDL and Verilog HDL.
 VHDL stands for VHSIC Hardware Description
Language.
 It can describe the behavior and structure of
electronic systems.
XILINX SOFTWARE
XILINX ISE(Integrated Synthesis Environment) is
a software tool produced by XILINX for synthesis
and analysis of HDL designs, enabling the
developer to synthesize(compile) their designs,
perform timing analysis, examine RTL diagrams,
simulate a designs reaction to different stimuli,
and configure the target device with the
programmer.
MODELING STYLE
There are three modeling style for vhdl programming
in XILINX:-
 Data flow
 Behavioral
 Structural
Vhdl code for and gate
Library IEEE;
use IEEE.std_logic_1164.all;
entity andgate is
Port(A: in std_logic;
B: in std_logic;
Y: out std_logic);
end andgate;
architecture dataflow of and gate is
begin
Y<= A and B;
end dataflow;
