Alcohols and esters are organic compounds. Alcohols contain an -OH functional group and were first discovered by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi. They can be produced through hydration of alkenes or fermentation of glucose. Alcohols have higher boiling points than alkanes due to hydrogen bonding. Esters are derived from carboxylic acids and contain an alkyl group in place of hydrogen from the carboxylic acid. They are produced through esterification, the reaction of alcohols and carboxylic acids. Alcohols and esters find many uses including as fuels, solvents, flavors, fragrances, and polymers.
