The Role Of Identity And Identity In Anna Karenina By Tolstoy
In Anna Karenina, Tolstoy characterizes Anna Karenina as a woman of sensual beauty who
wrestles with superficiality that inhibits authentic emotion. Anna s semblance makes her the most
beautiful woman in the room. While Anna s life transforms, the rings on her fingers are permanent.
The detail in which Anna s hands are described implies that the rings are more than mere
accessories; they embody her desperate need for internal stability. The rings are private, and it is
through the movement of the rings that Tolstoy explores the social constraint placed upon women
in Russian aristocracy. Amidst the superficiality of Russian elitists, Anna Kareninachallenges
societal expectations by proving that her profound capacity for thought and identity extends
beyond her elegance. Anna yearns to live despite being masked by shallow standards, so her rings
ultimately indicate a desire for authenticity that is free from external judgment. The existential
confrontation regarding her identity imbues a level of depth to her thought, evident as she moves
her rings. It is only within the closure of her rings that Anna is able to all at once [know] what
was in her soul ... with the trace of a smile of commiseration for herself, she sat down in the
armchair, taking off and putting on the rings on her left hand. As Anna touches her rings, she softly
approaches the subject of her existence. Contemplating her shame and disgrace that will be saved
by death, Anna confronts her desire to

Presidential Election Scenarios
The Presidential Election of 2016 is making an impact in, on, and around America. Military and
War on Terror is a topic that is based on where the government is sending troops; when they are
going; and why they are going to these places. The government has also allowed us to open
many prison camps that hold prisoners from places like Iraq, and the Middle East countries. The
leaders that are going to have to make these decisions and have our lives in their hands that are
coming are either, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jill Stein, or Gary Johnson. Clinton is a
democrat. Trump is a Republican. Stein is part of the Green s Party. Johnson is part of Libertarian

Foreign Relations With Russia Essay
Uniteds States foreign relations with Russia have been shaky even after the fall of the USSR in
1991, most notably because Russian leaders have never been very supportive of the United States
global democratic influence. However, with the collapse of the Soviet economy, Russia realized
that democratic economic policies were probably the only path to a successful and thriving country.
But with recent U.S. intervention in Russian foreign policy over the annexation of Crimea and the
unstable Ukrainian conflicts, relations with Russiahave become especially hostile. Therefore the
U.S. should take a look at the implications of losing stable relations with Russia (as it has in the
past few years) and instead strengthen these relations, to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly however, the U.S. should attempt to see Putin s side of the argument and try
to understand where he is coming from so that Russia no longer feels like it is being treated as a
lesser power when compared to the other more affluent Western nations. (Tsvetov, 58) Next we
must look at why Russians disregard U.S. aid and intervention, and how we can remedy
ourselves in order to promote better relations. First of all Russia desires to become a great
superpower as it had been post World War 2, however many Russians believe that U.S. intervention
in their private foreign policy has hindered Russia s growth locally as well as internationally. As a
result, Russia has taken its own measures to remedy this issue, starting with the unauthorized and
unlawful annexation of Crimea. (Tsvetov, 58) So the U.S. should make it clear that its intentions
are not to overpower Russia when interfering with its foreign policy, but rather to enforce
international laws and keep the world safe from Russian over empowerment. Additionally, the U.S.
should not interfere beyond its boundaries as Putin believes it has, an example being U.S. support
for the Ukrainian protesters. (Tsvetov, 58) And the U.S. must restore its integrity by pulling itself
out of its support for instances such as the colour revolutions and all other foreign incidences which

Toys R Us Vs Amazon Case Summary
CASE STUDY 1 1. In 2004, Toys R Us sued Amazon.com for violating terms of the agreement
between the companies; specifically, Toys R Us objected to Amazon.com s permitting Amazon
Marketplace retailers to sell toys (Note: when the lawsuit was filed, Amazon Marketplace was
called zShops ). Amazon.com responded by filing a countersuit. After more than two years of
litigation, a New Jersey Superior Court judge ruled that the agreement had been violated by both
parties. The judge ordered that the agreement be terminated and denied both companies claims for
monetary damages. Amazon.com appealed the ruling. In 2009, an appellate court affirmed the
lower court ruling but reversed the ruling on damages, which had awarded Toys R Us $93... Show

Our Secret By Susan Wideman Analysis
Non fiction can be a misleading genre for many because at a young age students are taught that
this word relates solely to biographies, historical events or nature; however, this is very untrue. A
vast variety of prose writings that can be about nearly anything as long as the events, people and
facts are authentic would be considered as non fiction. Two pieces of writingthat effectively prove
this claim are Our Secret by Susan Griffin and Our Time by John Edgar Wideman. Each of these
essays take a unique path to emphasize their points whilst keeping their audience on the edge of
their seats. Comparison: While the authors cause confusion for the readers by switching between
viewpoints, they still create an intimate connection between reader... Show more content on

By utilizing such different introductory sentences, it lures readers in because the ideas
presented are new and unheard of before and the originality is refreshing. The lesson on the
nucleus is critical because it becomes the center of the essay; it is where identity is formed.
Every story in Our Secret relates back to the core idea of identity and how it is formed and
shaped. Griffin writes, Like the stone in a cherry, it is found in the center of the cell, and like this
stone, keeps its precious kernel in a shell (Griffin 233). It demonstrates that the nucleus is a vital
part of life because without it, humans would amount to nothing and our existence would be for
naught. The human race revolves around something so trivial yet so significant. In addition,
Wideman s introduction forces readers to face the racial issues presented in the essay and to
understand why it began like this. In his writing, Wideman states, ...their world is the GHETTO...all
the the praise and attention is given to the slick guy (Wideman 422). In the first paragraph,
Wideman attempts to justify and explain the actions of a black man and to ensure

Dear Johannes,
1 am not surprised of the outcome of your meeting with Mr. Smythe Jones (CFO). However, I
cannot answer your request until I heard from local management. As it was agreed on the last
meeting, we were precluded ,from doing any work without first getting approval from
management at the headquarters and we were instructed by local management from doing
anything until they finalized what was required from us. It appears to me to be a Catch 22
game! 1 believe we (your Firm and ours) should not fall in the game of passing the ball to
someone else before getting a clear understanding of what is going on. We have had several
meetings with local management where the issue has been raised and were responded that other
priorities were established by the headquarters (on my end I thought they tell you everything they
have been instructed of locally, unfortunately it does not seem to be the case). In my opinion it
looks very easy that you accept from management at the headquarters to hold us accountable from
something we are not responsible for, and this does not mean I do not understand the pressure you
are receiving on your end. However, we are not the enemy. 1 am not sending copy of this message

Prions Cause Fatal Neurological Diseases in the Brain of...
Prions cause diseases, but they aren t viruses or bacteria or fungi or parasites, but proteinaceous
infectious particles, an abnormal form of a normally harmless protein found in the brain causing
variety of fatal neurological diseases of both animals and humans. They are the ones that cause the
well known mad cow disease in Britain and Scarpie for animals. Prions act slowly, and are virtually
indestructible.
Prions enter the brain through infection, or they can arise from mutations in the gene that encodes
the protein. When a prion (misfolded form of protein normally present in brain cells) enters a cell
with a normal protein structure, the prion converts the normal protein structures into a misfolded
prion version. Many prions continue to add up forming a complex that converts other protein
structures to prions. When all the prions add up they interfere with normal cellular functions and
cause disease symptoms. Prions can also spread from one organism to another. They can be
transmitted in food, as may occur when people eat prion laden beef from cattle with mad cow
disease.
Prion like proteins are normal proteins with similar prion like domains which may also be
involved in diseases of the brain or other organs. Seeded protein aggregation will lead to many
more diseases of the brain. In contrast to prions being simple infection in yeast cells prion forming
proteins initiate cell process such as the central dogma. The prion like proteins may not be widely

Analysis Of The Book 12 Of The Iliad
His True Nature
Following the demise of Troy, the Achaean s mighty fortification is destined to fall not by mere
mortal strength, but rather, the selfish act of divine intervention. In Book 12 of the Iliad, Homer s
narration is centralized around the Greek s mighty fortifications, the fortress that agitates the gods.
The author begins the story by describing Zeus s plans to dismantle the Greek rampart. The author
makes the god s plan manifest when Hector chastises Polydamas for his foresight and proceeds to
carry out his god s will. More specifically the structure of the story proceeds with Asius and
Sarpedon s attempt at charging the wall and finally Hector s assault, with the intervention of
Zeus, which successfully opens the gates and lead the Trojans inside the wall. Though, prior to
Hector s success, Homer illustrates stalemate like battle scenes to describe the evenness of the
mortal warriors. More specifically, Homer emphasizes this evenness in strength between both
armies and the overbearing power of Zeus through the usage of his epic similes, most notable in
lines 322 337, where Zeus is depicted by his divine powers as supporting Hector and his Trojans
breach the wall. Ultimately, Homer s simile in lines 322 337 functions as a way to determine the
fate of the victor on the battlefield, the breach of the Greek s fortification, and most importantly to
demonstrate how divine intervention is committed out of selfishness rather than to aid mortal men.
In lines 322 337,

Spinal Cord Stimulation Research Paper
Spinal Cord Stimulation Trial Information
WHAT IS A SPINAL CORD STIMULATION TRIAL?
A spinal cord stimulation trial is a test to see whether a spinal cord stimulator reduces your pain. A
spinal cord stimulator is a small device that is attached to your back or inserted (implanted) in your
back. The stimulator has small wires (leads) that connect it to your spinal cord. The stimulator sends
electrical pulses through the leads to the spinal cord. This can relieve pain. Your health care
provider may suggest a spinal cord stimulation trial if other treatments for chronic pain have not
worked for you. Spinal cord stimulation may be used to manage pain that is caused by:

health care provider:
в—‹ Your responses to the stimulator, as told by your health care provider.
в—‹ Your pain level throughout the day.
в—‹ The amount and kind of pain medicine that you take.
Take over the counter and prescription medicines only as told by your health care provider.
Do not take baths, swim, or use a hot tub until your health care provider approves.
Tell all health care providers who care for you that you have a spinal cord stimulator. This is
important information that could affect the medical treatment that you receive.
Keep all follow up visits as told by your health care provider. This is important.
WHEN SHOULD I SEEK MEDICAL CARE?

The Elements Of A Great Speech By Martin Luther King Jr.
Life is always easier when there is a way to find the answer. A cake is easier to bake with a recipe
to follow, and a great speech needs a formula or list of aspects to include. Good morning Mrs
Roche and students. For my presentation today I will explore a formula I have created that
contains all the elements of a great speech. I produced this formula while I was studying some of
the work of one of the best speakers and leaders of all time: Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist Minister, Activist, Humanitarian, and leader in the
African American Civil Rights Movement. He was known for his amazing speaking skills and
visionary speeches, which he used to successfully make a non violent movement against
segregation and injustice during his time. He was a great speaker and a great leader. So what
better of a leader than Martin Luther King Jr to help identify what key aspects need to be put into
the formula. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin Luther King s speeches are considered great because he manages to connect with the
audience through their emotional ties to the event he is talking about. In his eulogy for the death of
three girls killed in the bombing of their church he used the words :
These children unoffending, innocent and beautiful were victims of one of the most vicious and
tragic crimes ever perpetuated against humanity , this language both pays respect towards the girls
but also links back to his fight against injustice and this is exactly what the listeners will respond
to. They will be grateful to his kind words but will agree with him that it wasn t fair for the girls to
die so innocent and young, and that they want this to

Compartment Syndrome Analysis
Compartment Syndrome is a condition where there is an increase of pressure within a confined
area that is detrimental to the circulation and function of the tissues in the area (Grossman et al.,
2014). Fascia, a dense connective tissue, surrounds and separates the muscles and nerves into
compartments in the extremities. These fasciae provide sites of attachment for muscles, maintain
the positioning of muscle groups during motion and during contraction improve the mechanical
advantage of the muscle (Von Keudell et al., 2015). These fasciae create a low compliance, defined
anatomical area with their dense fibrous nature. These defined anatomical areas have a finite
volume, meaning that it can only endure a finite pressure (Rekha, 2010). A compartmental

Plastic surgery is a massive thing. Not only does it change the way God made you, but there are
also things that could go wrong in the midst of everything, just like the lesions and surgery in
Uglies. Although acceptance is a hard things to have throughout life, we need to be comfortable in
our own skin and not worry as much about what others think but, rather what we think.
8.The story of Uglies and Harrison Bergeron both focus on broken societies. Like Uglies, Harrison
Bergeron tries to make the society equal but in doing this breaks it even more. the transmitter

abilities that people had before that others would never have and punishing them for trying to

Native American Culture In The 18th And 19th Century
In the United States, there are over 500 federally recognized American and Native tribes. All which
study and practice their own set of cultures and values. Religion, language, food and way of dress
are what makes every tribe different in their own unique way. The Indian Wars of both the 18th and
19th century caused many of these tribes to relocate thus causing them to not only lose their
homelands but also their cultural identity. Native Americans were prohibited from practicing
religion and cultural ceremonies. This caused a recession in youth obtaining the knowledge to keep

shark slaughtered many people throughout the film. The film shows us our natural fear against

during the second attack. In the book on the second attack it says that the shark sees the boys feet

You don t want to be in the fight or flight response at bed time. This natural circadian rhythm makes
sense and it matches our lifestyles. Did Mother Nature know best?
But why you ask. Why are cortisol levels highest in the morning? For at least two major reasons.
One. Too get you up out of bed and ready to take on the day. Two. Working together with the
hormone glucagon cortisol raises blood sugar levels to power up your muscles and your brain!
Remember you have been fasting overnight and blood sugar levels will be low. The brain
demands the body do this and keep blood sugar levels stabilized.
Cortisol and fat accumulation
A little piece of data you need to know to lose fat. Cortisol breaks down muscle to release amino
acids (the building blocks of muscle) which are then used to make glucose, which is energy for the
brain! Think about this, where do you burn fat? In your muscles right. If you catabolise the very
tissue that burns fat you will lose your ability to burn fat and you metabolism will drop making it
more difficult to burn fat. Oh yes, you will be more tired with low energy. Cortisol also promotes
belly fat accumulation!
Further, cortisol contributes to elevated insulin with is the blood sugar balancing hormone.
Elevated insulin has two effects on fat. One it promotes fat storage. Two it inhibits fat mobilization
and utilization by muscles. Elevated insulin makes you store fat which you can t burn! YUCK!

Muslims In The Military Essay
After reading the many articles provided on Muslims serving in the military it is disheartening to
know how this population has been treated for serving for our country. Like many other
individuals Muslims are drawn to the military for the same reasons as other recruits, such as a
strong sense of patriotism, a search for discipline and dreams of attending college (Preston, 2014).
According to the U.S Department of Defense more than 3,500 Muslims fought in Afghanistan and
Iraq. It is also noted that Muslims have played an important role in the American armed forces
because of their linguistic skills and cultural understanding of Muslims living around the world

Due to the 911 Terrorist attacks the Islamic faith has been under tremendous scrutiny and has
created a negative connotation with terrorism against the U.S. Another challenge many Muslim
soldiers face stems from the challenges of dual identities as believers of the Islamic faith and as
members of the U.S. military. Some soldiers use fake last names to avoid being singled out by
insurgents as traitors and to prevent retaliations against their families (Dreazen, 2009). Some
other challenges Muslims serving in the military face are discrimination among their peers.
Multiple of the articles discussed how many soldiers are subjects of taunts, making them feel
singled out by fellow soldiers. After reviewing the article and reading I feel like there needs to
be a delicate balance of making Muslim military members feel less marginalized without their
being a risk for radicalization. I think currently the military is doing a great job balancing this by
allowing religious minority service members to display their beliefs outwardly such as wearing a

Benefits Of Small Businesses And Developing A Successful...
TESTIMONIAL from Sean Moore, Small Business Developer Congress Heights Community
Training and Development Corporation As a Small Business Development Specialist in Ward 8, I
understand the importance of small businesses and entrepreneurs in developing a successful and
self sustaining community. Furthermore, I understand that when communities become stagnant
and opportunities limited, it is important that those communities see investment from outside forces
to initiate change and restore hope and optimism. Accordingly, when I learned that the Mayor had
secured a commitment to bring the Wizards and Mystics practice facility and a new arena to serve
as home court for the mystics to Congress Heights, I was excited. I saw this investment from the
city as a commitment to bringing opportunity to our community and a catalyst to bringing new life
to our community by activating the long dormant St Elizabeths east campus. A campus, who s gates
and inactivity create a void in the fabric of our community. The city has invested hundreds of
millions of dollars in projects across the city that have accomplished resulted in the creation of safe

communities, created jobs and opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs and brought
hope to those communities. You can imagine my surprise and disappointment when Council

who makes food for the upper class people. Then, there is a violinist who serves as an entertainer

United States has been a country for only about two hundred and thirty nine years. In ten thousand
years the United States may or may not be around. This is significant because a nuclear waste site
will be dangerous for a span of ten thousand years. The WIPP, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant
, is a
nuclear waste site that is the result of testing nuclear weapons from the United States government.
The United States citizens must be protected from the radioactive wastes being regulated by the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission. (1)The primary goal of the WIPP is to create a sustainable
marker or message to warn the citizens of America, and to any future generations, about the
harmful site. The markers and messages must be able to last for ten thousand years so future
humans will be aware of the dangers the area contains. Due to the nuclear testing, the WIPP will
mark the hazardous nuclear waste that remains in New Mexico for a period of ten thousand years.
(2)The cultures have greatly changed over the last two thousand years. Languages, food, clothing,
religion, and other aspects of culture have been created, used, and disregarded. It is difficult to
know if the future generations will be able to comprehend our English language, that has been
around for thousands of years. Also a good amount of infrastructure has been damaged or
completely renewed over the years. For example, natural disasters

Health, Education, And Women
Raisa Feliz and Emmett Rafferty Interim Report #3 Health, Education and Women
Over the past few decades Brazil has made major improvements to its healthcare system. Before
1988, half of Brazil s population did not have health care coverage (World Health Organization).
This changed when Brazil implemented Unified Health System (Sistema Гљnico de SaГєde) which
provided universal free healthcare coverage for its citizens. Since its enactment, 75% of Brazil s
population now rely on Sistema Гљnico de SaГєde (SUS) as their sole provider of health coverage,
making it the largest public health system in the world (World Health Organization). SUS receives
its funding primarily through federal and local taxation totaling $208 billion (Deliotte).
However, this large amount of spending is not reflected in the quality of healthcare provided to
Brazilians. Brazil has an estimated 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 citizens and the beds are of bad
quality and are poorly distributed (Deliotte). Brazil s Federal Medical Council conducted a
survey that showed 93% of Brazilians considered the healthcare systems to be either very bad or
mediocre (Deliotte). While more Brazilians have access to healthcare than ever before, the quality
of care does not meet the requirements that would allow the system to be truly effective. Despite its
operational healthcare inefficiencies, Brazil s life expectancy has been rapidly increasing since
SUS s implementation, as shown in Figure 1.

Uniforms in Schools Don t Make Sense
Imagine you walk into school and everyone is wearing the same jeans, same striped scarf and the

administrators, teachers, students, parents. I think we shouldn t have school uniforms because it

The True Destiny Of American Settlers
As children and students we were taught that the Legendary Christopher Columbus founded
America. However history has proven that this alleged discovery is far from the truth. Not only had
the Spanish already settled Florida, but the Native Americans also known as Indians have already
inhabited America. From this awareness of New Found Land English settlers intruded on Native
American land and took over America under what was called manifest destiny. In the 19th century
United States, Manifest Destiny was a belief that was widely believed that the true destiny of
American settlers was to expand and move across the continent to spread American traditions and
their institutions, along with enlightening more primitive nations, also known as the Indians. This
destiny clearly was accomplished and today almost 240 years later there have been many laws and
administrative law cases that has aroused from the accomplishment of Manifest Destiny in regards
to Native Americans.
Recently on April 6, 2016 the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit decided a case before
Judges Mary Schroder, Sandra Ikuta, and Morgan Christen. In an Indian law action, The Navajo
Native Americans challenged the National Parks Service s because of their inventory of human
remains and funerary objects previously removed from the Navajo Reservation. The United States
Courts of Appeals reversed the district court s dismissal where the Park Service s decision to

Reflective Essay About Self Respect
In life, people are free to do what they desire. We have the ability to choose our own path; a path
that teaches us not only lessons that lead us to social/academic achievement, but a lesson about
morality, self respect, and integrity. It s importance are the key components that inspire us to strive
and want to succeed. The path that each of us chooses to take surrounds us with problems and
obstacles that derogate the self confidencethat we have in ourselves away and leading us to
distress. However, these problems that torment our mind are the reasons we learn the morality of
self respect. It s not about how great you can succeed without fault, it s about how critical you can
fail and still maintain the determination to move forward in order to mature to this mindset of self
respect and integrity, which are the fundamentals of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of my self confidence. Most importantly, going through a depression and executing a solution

Enlightening my mind from the worst of my depression helped me help others who are also

• How Does The Sympathetic Nervous System Prepare Your...
Your Body s Response to Emergency
How does the body prepare for emergencies? The answer lies in the Sympathetic Nervous System
(SNS). It is the branch of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) that controls the body s reaction
to physical and emotional stressors. The sympathetic branch activates the glands and organs that
defend the body against attack. It is called the fight or flight response.
This is a primitive response designed to protect from danger. When danger is perceived, the
sympathetic nervous system responds immediately to prepare a person to stay and fight or take
flight. Blood rushes away from nonessential systems such as the digestive and excretory systems
and is redirected to the extremities. The heart beats faster to ... Show more content on

The glucose obtained from the liver cells produces a surge in energy better known as an adrenaline
rush . The hormones also bind to receptor cells on smooth muscle and inhibit the muscles of the
stomach and intestines, slowing down the digestive process and allowing more energy for
emergency functions. When these hormones bind to the smooth muscle cells of the bronchioles,
they cause the muscles to relax allowing more oxygen into the blood. At the sinoatrial node of the
heart, epinephrine stimulates the pace maker cells to beat faster. Epinephrine also contracts certain
types of muscles below the skin, causing beads of sweat and raised hairs. Once fight or flight has
taken place, another branch of the ANS, the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) can take over
again, calming everything down and returning body processes to normal.
The fight or flight response is useful in the short term because it assists the body in responding
quickly and effectively in emergencies. However in the long term, the sympathetic response can
become harmful. This is because the functions of sympathetic activation can put additional stress on
the nervous system. If the sympathetic system remains highly active, the parasympathetic response
will not activate and return the body to homeostasis. This means the body does not get the chance
to recover from stress causing a number of physical and psychological disorders.
In conclusion, the brain is a complex organ with the ability to cause

My Life Reflection Paper
Literature and writing have had an affect on my life starting from my early childhood and
continues to influence me as I end my 11th year of school. From children s pop up books to 500
page novels reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name
to using vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letterand the
unfortunate events little Hester Prynneis forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing
two juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writingand literature have helped to guide me
in life and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at
Piqua Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I
always seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling
words incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever
clicked for me. Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would
click eventually. My mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling
tests we would take a cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word
I would spell it out in the shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while
incorporating some fun into studying. First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs.
Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held back because I was so far behind compared
to the other children in my class. At times we would read together in class, taking turns by going
around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to me and every other word I would
stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter suggested I be held back a
year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school with me to practice
reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading and writing
greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew older and
transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I
excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs.

Essay about Visions of America
Visions of America
The importance of American landscape painting in the nineteenth century extended far beyond the
borders of the art world. The nineteenth century in America was a paradoxical time in which great
nationalism and enormous self confidence and optimism merged with growing disunity
(Wilmerding 54), and the glow of progress was inextricably tied to the destruction of the majestic
landscape that was a source of American identity and pride. Landscape painters at this time were
faced with the difficult task of reconciling these conflicting aspects of American culture and
identity. Their paintings blend physical descriptions of the American land with cultural descriptions
of the American national identity.

As Novak goes on to point out, this elevation of landscape painting eased America s fear that the
country s lack of classical culture prevented its art from standing up to that of Europe. Cole
himself, while describing a new definition of the sublime, describes as well the shift in America
from valuing history to valuing the sense of possibility manifested in the land: He who stands on
Mount Albano and looks down on ancient Rome, has his mind peopled with the gigantic
association of the storied past; but he who stands on the mounds of the West, may experience the
emotion of the sublime, but it is the sublimity of a shoreless ocean un islanded by the recorded
deeds of man. (Cole, from Essay on American Scenery, quoted in Themes from Nature 61)
Fig 1. Thomas Cole, Landscape with Tree Trunks, 1825.
Landscape with Tree Trunks is an example of Cole s vision of the American land. This work, with
its rich palette and swirling dark storm clouds, has all the seriousness and monumentality of a
history painting. Dramatic light effects play upon the lone tree in the foreground, drawing the eye.
Thus the tree, or nature itself, rather than figures from the Bible or classical antiquity, is the subject
of this work. The vast and majestic landscape of the painting is awe inspiring, making the work a
visual example of the new American

The Forest Unseen Sparknotes
The Forest Unseen shows how nature has a beauty on a much smaller scale than what is seen on
the larger spectrum of life. Haskell studied a square meter in the forest for an entire year to
examine the smallest of details to show how when the large scale is studied there are many
things happening in the small scale. The Forest Unseen allows readers to see how much beauty
there is beyond what meets the eye. He consistently supports his main themes throughout the
book by citing specific examples. Haskell s endeavor to discover the beauty of the environment
is successful in that he uses scientific and poetic language to draw the reader into his study as
he explains his day to day experiences in the forest. Haskell is able to elaborate on his theme by
examining beauty in the connection that is seen on a smaller spectrum. He explains how lichens
are created by the connection or marriage of two creatures. Lichens are amalgams of two
creatures: a fungus and either an alga or a bacterium. (Haskell, pg2) Without one of the creatures
found in the lichen, it would be unable to survive on its own. Haskell describes through a
metaphor that just like lichen, humans are connected and depend on one another. We are Russian
dolls, our lives made possible by other lives within us...We are lichen on a grand scale. (Haskell,
pg7) As winter continues, Haskell examines the newly fallen snow during the early moments of
sunrise. While most people find beauty in the large blanket of snow that

Molar Concentration Lab Report
Introduction:
In 1909 S.P.L. Sorensen published a paper in Biochem Z in which he discussed the effect of
H1+ ions on the activity of enzymes. In the paper he invented the term pH to describe this effect
and defined it as the log[H1+ ]. In 1924 Sorensen realized that the pH of a solution is a function
of the quot;activity quot; of the H1+ ion not the concentration and published a second paper on
the subject. A better definition would be pH= log[aH1+ ], where aH1+ denotes the activity of the
H1+ ion. The activity of an ion is a function of many variables of which concentration is one. It is
unfortunate that chemistry texts use a definition for pH that has been obsolete for over 50 years.

not to allow the truth to become stagnant and overused as it would be if he did not question his life
further. Socrates exemplifies the model of self reliance through his decision to not only disregard
the notions of society but also in his decision to believe his own ideas and conceptions of what the
truth is. Socrates relies purely on his own personal thoughts. This concept is important because so
often humankind ignores that feeling or conviction deep within themselves. Emerson and Socrates
both strongly argue that in order to fully comprehend what truth and knowledge are, you absolutely
must fully commit yourself to the beliefs within you. Self reliance not only allows for a deeper
connection with the truth and knowledge, but also allows humankind to increase critical

Essay On Nancy Reagan
Nancy Davis Reagan
By Klaire Ladehoff Nancy Reagan was born in New York City on July 6, 1921. Nancy s name
isn t even Nancy at all, it s Anne Frances Robbins. She was the only child of Kenneth Robbins
and Edith Luckett Robins. Kenneth was a salesman and Edith was an actress. Kenneth left the
marriage while Anne was still an infant. Since Kenneth left, Edith sent Anne to be raised by her
aunt and uncle, Virginia and C. Audley Galbraith in Bethesda, Maryland. Edith sent Anne to them
because she wanted to fulfill her acting career. Anne attended Sidwell Friends School. Anne and
Virginia went to New York whenever Edith was there for theater runs. Early on in her life, she got
the nickname Nancy . She, clearly, used that as her real name. Edith married a man named Loyal
Davis. Loyal adopted Nancy and treated her as his own. She went back and lived with her mother
and stepfather. In the household, she was surrounded with wealth. Loyal was a neurosurgeon in
Chicago. Edith and Loyal brought in a lot of money to Nancy s world. Since Nancy moved in with
Edith and Loyal, she attended the Girls Latin School. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She received very bad press for that, but she flipped it. She campaigned drug abuse awareness
and education. She visited prevention programs and rehabilitation centers. She preached that
drugs are bad for the communities and held a youth drug abuse conference at the White House.
The National Crusade for a Drug Free America act was signed into law by President Reagan in
1986. People thought that Nancy s most important role as the first lady was Ronald s personal
protector. Some attempted to assassinate President Reagan, and Nancy made it her concern to
know every little thing that he was doing. This caused Nancy and Ronald to argue after she found
out the Iran Contra affair was revealed. This is what caused Ronald to

Allowing someone to choose when to die, in the face of intolerable pain, is seen by South
Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society (SAVES) as the most dignified and compassionate
remedy to end suffering (South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society 1995). Therefore, present
legislation allowing patients to refuse treatment does not help them to die with any dignity. 5.2 Life
Support
The cost of healthcare has risen dramatically and shows every sign of continuing to do so
(Australian Psychological Society n.d.). The Australian Psychological Society claim that for
many, the improper use of life support systems to temporary lengthen life, without any
improvement in the quality of life, can be used as a good argument for euthanasia (Australian
Psychological Society n.d.). Medical policy and hospital practice means decisions are already
being made about who qualifies for life support. This implies an already covert practice of
euthanasia (Chaney 2001). Therefore, some form of legalisation would acknowledge an already
existing practice and extend the decision making to the patient also.
5.3 Public Opinion
Recent studies and polls in Australia seem to show support from both professionals and the general
public for individuals to have the right to choose between euthanasia as an alternative to a life of
suffering (What is euthanasia? 2006, para 8). If it is supposed that legislation should represent the
views of the public, then

Never On A Sunday, By Companies Like Mccoy s Building...
Never on a Sunday is a case study that discusses the philosophy carried out by companies like
McCoy s Building Supply and Chick Fil A. Both of these organizations are perfect examples of
Organizational or Corporate culture defined as a system of shared actions, values, and beliefs that
develop within an organization that guides the behavior of its members (Schermerhom, Osborn,
Uhl bien, Hunt, 2012, p. 348). At McCoy s for example Managers are asked to concentrate on
service related issues Managers focus more on the items in store and customer service and the
majority of their administrative workload is handled through headquarters (Schermerhom, Osborn,
Uhl bien, Hunt, 2012, p. 353). Working as a manager myself that really sounds like a great method
of management. There are many times where my boss and the rest of the management team where I
work struggles. Keeping up with all the administrative duties and the store at the same time can be
really trying and is a never ending workload. This makes neither one of them get the attention they
require and more often than not we find ourselves trying to do just enough administrative work and
just enough floor work to get through the day. Additionally, the management teams meet regularly
to discuss products and other important aspects that impact the stores. Sometimes in my line of
work we wish that we had the opportunity to meet and discuss new ideas and products that could
improve our stores.

Supply and Demand Economic Critique

Supply and Demand Economic Critique
The United States economy is determined by a number of factors, such as; gross domestic product
(GDP), unemployment rates, consumer income, and interest rates. Everything the U.S. produces is
measured by the GDP. When the GDP turns negative, the economy can enter a recession. If this
negative GDP continues for years the country is considered in a depression. Supply and demand are
the forces drive the U.S. economy. Supply includes employment and natural resources such as oil.
Demand, or personal consumption, drives 70% of the economy. The current spiral of the United
States economy can be attributed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Consumer Confidence Index is watched by stock market analysts and investors to get an idea
of whether consumer spending will continue to drive the economy.
The U.S. is also facing income inequality, one quarter of Americans make less than $10 per hour,
and this is income below poverty level. Many lower wage workers receive no health insurance,
pension plans, no sick or vacation days. Recent government tax policies have helped rich investors
more than the low wage earners. Technology and outsourcing has increased inequality. Emerging
markets of other countries are seeing increases in their income as they become more competitive in
the global marketplace. Overseas work forces are becoming more skilled and sophisticated in
managing their economy; as a result, wealth is shifting to those countries.
Interest rates control the flow of money in the economy. High interest rates curb inflation, but also
slow down the economy. Lower interest rates stimulate the economy, but could lead to inflation.
Americans must know whether rates are increasing or decreasing, and what other economic
indicators are saying. The target interest rate, or short term interest rate is controlled by the
Federal Reserve. Long term interest rates are market driven. The global average interest rate for
long term debt is the result of global demand for credit compared to global supply of saving.
It doesn t seem clear if the country is still rising from its

The Colonel By Michael Hogan Analysis
Study by definition is the application of mind to the knowledge that one have, as by reading,
observation, writing or talking. Many people have acknowledged the benefits of studies in lives
and that is one of the reason why the education system exist. Studies have lots of advantages, but if
people both study and apply it to their lives, the knowledgethat they have would last longer and
give more benefits to them. In Of Studies, Francis Bacon points out about the importance of studies
and how it is useful in practical application. In The Colonel, Michael Hogan describes his
experiences in learningtennisfrom an army colonel who also taught him life s lessons. Although

people see how some of these values were applied in one s life. For people to get comprehensive

Learning theories or basic ideas of some subject of studies are not fully useful until people use as

How Independent Consultants Fill The Gap And Complement...
I am presently working on a business plan to provide college admission guidance as an independent
professional. There are countless media headlines on how the increased complexity of the college
application process and the competitive results for admissions requires students to receive more
guidance while the ratio of students to school counselors increases. This paper aims to explore
some ways that independent consultants fill the gap and complement high schoolcounseling. I used
interviews and questionnaires to elicit information. I contacted several counselors in public and
private schools to get the profiles of families that seek outside assistance with the college
application process and to understand how best to arrange a collaboration between counselors for
the benefit of the student. Through questionnaires, I asked families of current high school students,
rising college freshmen, and rising college sophomores which aspects of the process warrant more
support. I also reviewed articles and books on the subject to identify the key areas where students
need additional assistance with college admissions planning. The surveys and decision matrices I
used are available to assist counselors, students, and families.
Background/Issue
The National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) identifies that school
counselors play a crucial role in creating a college going culture. However, with a national student
to counselor ratio of 471:1 in public

The character I chose was from a book titled Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. I
found Shylock to be an interesting character since there was a tremendous change with regard to
his character. At the beginning on the book, Shylock was depicted as a man who was cruel and
selfish. The plot of the story illustrates how people hated him because he did not show mercy to
any person who default his payments. His cruel character is depicted when he intentionally lend
Antonio cash knowing that he would not be able to pay it back on time. This character is
facilitated by the fact that the terms and conditions laid on the loan are barbaric. Shylock insists on
a pound of flesh from Antonio s body when he defaults payment. As expected, Antonio... Show

Dubose s fight with addiction and her willingness to face the illness head on despite knowing
that it s going to take her life. Also Jen learns of bravery from Atticus who faces a mad dog. Jen s
most courageous act is when the mob confronts Atticus at the jail, determined to kill not only
Tom but also Atticus, if necessary. Jem refuses to obey father for the first time in his life. Scout
explains, In the midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. I am
not going, was the steady answer. Scout recognizes that Jem is exhibiting great courage. Scout,
however, is braver by addressing the mob, although, ironically, she has no idea how brave she s
being. Not until she s safety tucked in bed that night does Scout realize that the line between
bravery and foolhardiness is thin. This act of bravery enables Jem to separate the men in the mob
into individuals, so they are no longer thinking as a mob and more and more as in individuals. She
also reminds them that they have children at home and less hate and more love fill their minds as
they listen to her ask usual questions. With this, Scout and Jem were able to separate the mob and
stop them from fighting Atticus. The issue of slavery was one that almost tore apart the union that
is now the United States of America. The reason for this was because different sides of the union
sought different goals and had different ideals.

Quiet Majority
The Worries of a Quiet Majority. (Persuasive Essay Final Draft)
As I walk closer to someone I wish to speak to, the feeling of dread increases at the same rate as
my approach. I start planning exactly what I want to say, with the knowledge that my words will
not come out that way at all. Having reached what is considered the appropriate distance for
conversing, I mentally look over my words one more time before sending them along. As my
fear mounts I draw a breath, let it out, and proceed to breathe again. I tell myself to stop stalling
and as the words rise up, they stop at my throat. I silently yell at myself to get on with it as sweat
starts to break out. The words are in my mouth now, but my mouth does not move. I scream,
internally, to just say it, say it, SAY IT! I ask my friend if I can get a ride home with them, they
say, sure thing . On the outside, I am calm and collected; on the inside, my soul collapses into an
exhausted puddle. This is not the first time it has happened, and it won t be the last, for this is part
of being Autistic; and I want people to know more about the problems it causes and how they can
help.

  • 2. The Role Of Identity And Identity In Anna Karenina By Tolstoy In Anna Karenina, Tolstoy characterizes Anna Karenina as a woman of sensual beauty who wrestles with superficiality that inhibits authentic emotion. Anna s semblance makes her the most beautiful woman in the room. While Anna s life transforms, the rings on her fingers are permanent. The detail in which Anna s hands are described implies that the rings are more than mere accessories; they embody her desperate need for internal stability. The rings are private, and it is through the movement of the rings that Tolstoy explores the social constraint placed upon women in Russian aristocracy. Amidst the superficiality of Russian elitists, Anna Kareninachallenges societal expectations by proving that her profound capacity for thought and identity extends beyond her elegance. Anna yearns to live despite being masked by shallow standards, so her rings ultimately indicate a desire for authenticity that is free from external judgment. The existential confrontation regarding her identity imbues a level of depth to her thought, evident as she moves her rings. It is only within the closure of her rings that Anna is able to all at once [know] what was in her soul ... with the trace of a smile of commiseration for herself, she sat down in the armchair, taking off and putting on the rings on her left hand. As Anna touches her rings, she softly approaches the subject of her existence. Contemplating her shame and disgrace that will be saved by death, Anna confronts her desire to ... Foreign Relations With Russia Essay Uniteds States foreign relations with Russia have been shaky even after the fall of the USSR in 1991, most notably because Russian leaders have never been very supportive of the United States global democratic influence. However, with the collapse of the Soviet economy, Russia realized that democratic economic policies were probably the only path to a successful and thriving country. But with recent U.S. intervention in Russian foreign policy over the annexation of Crimea and the unstable Ukrainian conflicts, relations with Russiahave become especially hostile. Therefore the U.S. should take a look at the implications of losing stable relations with Russia (as it has in the past few years) and instead strengthen these relations, to... Most importantly however, the U.S. should attempt to see Putin s side of the argument and try to understand where he is coming from so that Russia no longer feels like it is being treated as a lesser power when compared to the other more affluent Western nations. (Tsvetov, 58) Next we must look at why Russians disregard U.S. aid and intervention, and how we can remedy ourselves in order to promote better relations. First of all Russia desires to become a great superpower as it had been post World War 2, however many Russians believe that U.S. intervention in their private foreign policy has hindered Russia s growth locally as well as internationally. As a result, Russia has taken its own measures to remedy this issue, starting with the unauthorized and unlawful annexation of Crimea. (Tsvetov, 58) So the U.S. should make it clear that its intentions are not to overpower Russia when interfering with its foreign policy, but rather to enforce international laws and keep the world safe from Russian over empowerment. Additionally, the U.S. should not interfere beyond its boundaries as Putin believes it has, an example being U.S. support for the Ukrainian protesters. A vast variety of prose writings that can be about nearly anything as long as the events, people and facts are authentic would be considered as non fiction. Two pieces of writingthat effectively prove this claim are Our Secret by Susan Griffin and Our Time by John Edgar Wideman. The lesson on the nucleus is critical because it becomes the center of the essay; it is where identity is formed. Griffin writes, Like the stone in a cherry, it is found in the center of the cell, and like this stone, keeps its precious kernel in a shell (Griffin 233). It demonstrates that the nucleus is a vital part of life because without it, humans would amount to nothing and our existence would be for naught. The human race revolves around something so trivial yet so significant. In addition, Wideman s introduction forces readers to face the racial issues presented in the essay and to understand why it began like this. Prions cause diseases, but they aren t viruses or bacteria or fungi or parasites, but proteinaceous infectious particles, an abnormal form of a normally harmless protein found in the brain causing variety of fatal neurological diseases of both animals and humans. They are the ones that cause the well known mad cow disease in Britain and Scarpie for animals. Prions act slowly, and are virtually indestructible. Prions enter the brain through infection, or they can arise from mutations in the gene that encodes the protein. When a prion (misfolded form of protein normally present in brain cells) enters a cell with a normal protein structure, the prion converts the normal protein structures into a misfolded prion version. Many prions continue to add up forming a complex that converts other protein structures to prions. When all the prions add up they interfere with normal cellular functions and cause disease symptoms. Prions can also spread from one organism to another. They can be transmitted in food, as may occur when people eat prion laden beef from cattle with mad cow disease. Prion like proteins are normal proteins with similar prion like domains which may also be involved in diseases of the brain or other organs. Seeded protein aggregation will lead to many more diseases of the brain. • 9. Analysis Of The Book 12 Of The Iliad His True Nature Following the demise of Troy, the Achaean s mighty fortification is destined to fall not by mere mortal strength, but rather, the selfish act of divine intervention. In Book 12 of the Iliad, Homer s narration is centralized around the Greek s mighty fortifications, the fortress that agitates the gods. The author begins the story by describing Zeus s plans to dismantle the Greek rampart. The author makes the god s plan manifest when Hector chastises Polydamas for his foresight and proceeds to carry out his god s will. More specifically the structure of the story proceeds with Asius and Sarpedon s attempt at charging the wall and finally Hector s assault, with the intervention of Zeus, which successfully opens the gates and lead the Trojans inside the wall. Though, prior to Hector s success, Homer illustrates stalemate like battle scenes to describe the evenness of the mortal warriors. More specifically, Homer emphasizes this evenness in strength between both armies and the overbearing power of Zeus through the usage of his epic similes, most notable in lines 322 337, where Zeus is depicted by his divine powers as supporting Hector and his Trojans breach the wall. Ultimately, Homer s simile in lines 322 337 functions as a way to determine the fate of the victor on the battlefield, the breach of the Greek s fortification, and most importantly to demonstrate how divine intervention is committed out of selfishness rather than to aid mortal men. From this awareness of New Found Land English settlers intruded on Native American land and took over America under what was called manifest destiny. In the 19th century United States, Manifest Destiny was a belief that was widely believed that the true destiny of American settlers was to expand and move across the continent to spread American traditions and their institutions, along with enlightening more primitive nations, also known as the Indians. This destiny clearly was accomplished and today almost 240 years later there have been many laws and administrative law cases that has aroused from the accomplishment of Manifest Destiny in regards to Native Americans. • 24. Reflective Essay About Self Respect In life, people are free to do what they desire. We have the ability to choose our own path; a path that teaches us not only lessons that lead us to social/academic achievement, but a lesson about morality, self respect, and integrity. It s importance are the key components that inspire us to strive and want to succeed. The path that each of us chooses to take surrounds us with problems and obstacles that derogate the self confidencethat we have in ourselves away and leading us to distress. However, these problems that torment our mind are the reasons we learn the morality of self respect. It s not about how great you can succeed without fault, it s about how critical you can fail and still maintain the determination to move forward in order to mature to this mindset of self respect and integrity, which are the fundamentals of... • 25. • How Does The Sympathetic Nervous System Prepare Your... Your Body s Response to Emergency How does the body prepare for emergencies? The answer lies in the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). It is the branch of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) that controls the body s reaction to physical and emotional stressors. The sympathetic branch activates the glands and organs that defend the body against attack. It is called the fight or flight response. This is a primitive response designed to protect from danger. When danger is perceived, the sympathetic nervous system responds immediately to prepare a person to stay and fight or take flight. Blood rushes away from nonessential systems such as the digestive and excretory systems and is redirected to the extremities. The heart beats faster to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The glucose obtained from the liver cells produces a surge in energy better known as an adrenaline rush . The hormones also bind to receptor cells on smooth muscle and inhibit the muscles of the stomach and intestines, slowing down the digestive process and allowing more energy for emergency functions. When these hormones bind to the smooth muscle cells of the bronchioles, they cause the muscles to relax allowing more oxygen into the blood. At the sinoatrial node of the heart, epinephrine stimulates the pace maker cells to beat faster. Epinephrine also contracts certain types of muscles below the skin, causing beads of sweat and raised hairs. Once fight or flight has taken place, another branch of the ANS, the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) can take over again, calming everything down and returning body processes to normal. The fight or flight response is useful in the short term because it assists the body in responding quickly and effectively in emergencies. However in the long term, the sympathetic response can become harmful. This is because the functions of sympathetic activation can put additional stress on the nervous system. If the sympathetic system remains highly active, the parasympathetic response will not activate and return the body to homeostasis. This means the body does not get the chance to recover from stress causing a number of physical and psychological disorders. In conclusion, the brain is a complex organ with the ability to cause ... From children s pop up books to 500 page novels reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name to using vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letterand the unfortunate events little Hester Prynneis forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing two juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writingand literature have helped to guide me in life and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at Piqua Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I always seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling words incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever clicked for me. Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would click eventually. My mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling tests we would take a cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word I would spell it out in the shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while incorporating some fun into studying. First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs. Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held back because I was so far behind compared to the other children in my class. At times we would read together in class, taking turns by going around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to me and every other word I would stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter suggested I be held back a year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school with me to practice reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading and writing greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew older and transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs. ... The nineteenth century in America was a paradoxical time in which great nationalism and enormous self confidence and optimism merged with growing disunity (Wilmerding 54), and the glow of progress was inextricably tied to the destruction of the majestic landscape that was a source of American identity and pride. Landscape painters at this time were faced with the difficult task of reconciling these conflicting aspects of American culture and identity. Cole himself, while describing a new definition of the sublime, describes as well the shift in America from valuing history to valuing the sense of possibility manifested in the land: He who stands on Mount Albano and looks down on ancient Rome, has his mind peopled with the gigantic association of the storied past; but he who stands on the mounds of the West, may experience the emotion of the sublime, but it is the sublimity of a shoreless ocean un islanded by the recorded deeds of man. This work, with its rich palette and swirling dark storm clouds, has all the seriousness and monumentality of a history painting. Dramatic light effects play upon the lone tree in the foreground, drawing the eye. Haskell studied a square meter in the forest for an entire year to examine the smallest of details to show how when the large scale is studied there are many things happening in the small scale. The Forest Unseen allows readers to see how much beauty there is beyond what meets the eye. He consistently supports his main themes throughout the book by citing specific examples. Haskell s endeavor to discover the beauty of the environment is successful in that he uses scientific and poetic language to draw the reader into his study as he explains his day to day experiences in the forest. Haskell is able to elaborate on his theme by examining beauty in the connection that is seen on a smaller spectrum. He explains how lichens are created by the connection or marriage of two creatures. Lichens are amalgams of two creatures: a fungus and either an alga or a bacterium. (Haskell, pg2) Without one of the creatures found in the lichen, it would be unable to survive on its own. Haskell describes through a metaphor that just like lichen, humans are connected and depend on one another. We are Russian dolls, our lives made possible by other lives within us...We are lichen on a grand scale. Allowing someone to choose when to die, in the face of intolerable pain, is seen by South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society (SAVES) as the most dignified and compassionate remedy to end suffering (South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society 1995). Therefore, present legislation allowing patients to refuse treatment does not help them to die with any dignity. 5.2 Life Support The cost of healthcare has risen dramatically and shows every sign of continuing to do so (Australian Psychological Society n.d.). The Australian Psychological Society claim that for many, the improper use of life support systems to temporary lengthen life, without any improvement in the quality of life, can be used as a good argument for euthanasia (Australian Psychological Society n.d.). Medical policy and hospital practice means decisions are already being made about who qualifies for life support. This implies an already covert practice of euthanasia (Chaney 2001). Therefore, some form of legalisation would acknowledge an already existing practice and extend the decision making to the patient also. 5.3 Public Opinion Recent studies and polls in Australia seem to show support from both professionals and the general public for individuals to have the right to choose between euthanasia as an alternative to a life of suffering (What is euthanasia? 2006, para 8). Everything the U.S. produces is measured by the GDP. When the GDP turns negative, the economy can enter a recession. If this negative GDP continues for years the country is considered in a depression. Supply and demand are the forces drive the U.S. economy. Supply includes employment and natural resources such as oil. Demand, or personal consumption, drives 70% of the economy. The current spiral of the United States economy can be attributed ... The Consumer Confidence Index is watched by stock market analysts and investors to get an idea of whether consumer spending will continue to drive the economy. The U.S. is also facing income inequality, one quarter of Americans make less than $10 per hour, and this is income below poverty level. Many lower wage workers receive no health insurance, pension plans, no sick or vacation days. Recent government tax policies have helped rich investors more than the low wage earners. Technology and outsourcing has increased inequality. Emerging markets of other countries are seeing increases in their income as they become more competitive in the global marketplace. Overseas work forces are becoming more skilled and sophisticated in managing their economy; as a result, wealth is shifting to those countries. Interest rates control the flow of money in the economy. High interest rates curb inflation, but also slow down the economy. Lower interest rates stimulate the economy, but could lead to inflation. Americans must know whether rates are increasing or decreasing, and what other economic indicators are saying. The target interest rate, or short term interest rate is controlled by the Federal Reserve. Long term interest rates are market driven. The global average interest rate for long term debt is the result of global demand for credit compared to global supply of saving. It doesn t seem clear if the country is still rising from its ... Many people have acknowledged the benefits of studies in lives and that is one of the reason why the education system exist. Studies have lots of advantages, but if people both study and apply it to their lives, the knowledgethat they have would last longer and give more benefits to them. • 46. How Independent Consultants Fill The Gap And Complement... I am presently working on a business plan to provide college admission guidance as an independent professional. There are countless media headlines on how the increased complexity of the college application process and the competitive results for admissions requires students to receive more guidance while the ratio of students to school counselors increases. This paper aims to explore some ways that independent consultants fill the gap and complement high schoolcounseling. I used interviews and questionnaires to elicit information. I contacted several counselors in public and private schools to get the profiles of families that seek outside assistance with the college application process and to understand how best to arrange a collaboration between counselors for the benefit of the student. Through questionnaires, I asked families of current high school students, rising college freshmen, and rising college sophomores which aspects of the process warrant more support. I also reviewed articles and books on the subject to identify the key areas where students need additional assistance with college admissions planning. The surveys and decision matrices I used are available to assist counselors, students, and families. Background/Issue The National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) identifies that school counselors play a crucial role in creating a college going culture. However, with a national student to counselor ratio of 471:1 in public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The character I chose was from a book titled Merchant of... The character I chose was from a book titled Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. I found Shylock to be an interesting character since there was a tremendous change with regard to his character. At the beginning on the book, Shylock was depicted as a man who was cruel and selfish. The plot of the story illustrates how people hated him because he did not show mercy to any person who default his payments. His cruel character is depicted when he intentionally lend Antonio cash knowing that he would not be able to pay it back on time. This character is facilitated by the fact that the terms and conditions laid on the loan are barbaric. Shylock insists on a pound of flesh from Antonio s body when he defaults payment. As expected, Antonio... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dubose s fight with addiction and her willingness to face the illness head on despite knowing that it s going to take her life. Jem refuses to obey father for the first time in his life. Scout explains, In the midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. I am not going, was the steady answer. Scout recognizes that Jem is exhibiting great courage. Scout, however, is braver by addressing the mob, although, ironically, she has no idea how brave she s being. Not until she s safety tucked in bed that night does Scout realize that the line between bravery and foolhardiness is thin. This act of bravery enables Jem to separate the men in the mob into individuals, so they are no longer thinking as a mob and more and more as in individuals. She also reminds them that they have children at home and less hate and more love fill their minds as they listen to her ask usual questions. With this, Scout and Jem were able to separate the mob and stop them from fighting Atticus. The issue of slavery was one that almost tore apart the union that is now the United States of America. The reason for this was because different sides of the union sought different goals and had different ideals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Quiet Majority The Worries of a Quiet Majority. (Persuasive Essay Final Draft) As I walk closer to someone I wish to speak to, the feeling of dread increases at the same rate as my approach. I start planning exactly what I want to say, with the knowledge that my words will not come out that way at all. Having reached what is considered the appropriate distance for conversing, I mentally look over my words one more time before sending them along. As my fear mounts I draw a breath, let it out, and proceed to breathe again. I tell myself to stop stalling and as the words rise up, they stop at my throat. I silently yell at myself to get on with it as sweat starts to break out. The words are in my mouth now, but my mouth does not move. I scream, internally, to just say it, say it, SAY IT! I ask my friend if I can get a ride home with them, they say, sure thing . On the outside, I am calm and collected; on the inside, my soul collapses into an exhausted puddle. This is not the first time it has happened, and it won t be the last, for this is part of being Autistic; and I want people to know more about the problems it causes and how they can help.
