Aksum was an ancient kingdom in northeastern Africa that was one of the most important trading kingdoms in eastern Africa. It exported goods like ivory, salt, gold and animals. Aksum was also significant as the first major kingdom to convert to Christianity and for possibly being the final resting place for the Ark of the Covenant. The kingdom declined due to the rise of Islam and control of trade routes by Muslim sailors, as well as climate change.
