Learning Objectives
Educate the architectural community on using high
performance industrial doors so that they are able to:
• Describe the history of the high performance industrial doors
• List the benefits that high performance industrial doors offer (vs. conventional rolling metal
doors)
• Increase workflow
• Reduce operational costs
• Reduce energy costs
• Enhance safety of employees, products, equipment

High Speed Industrial
Doors
The History
8
Bernt Manns, a paper machine clothing
engineer, designed the first high speed
door with a fabric panel that would roll
up and down quickly sealing the door’s
opening.
High Speed Industrial Doors:
The History
9
A unique counterbalance system
kept the door closed tight and
made for remarkably smooth
operation.
This innovative idea has formed
today’s high speed industrial
door industry.
High Speed Industrial Doors:
The History
10
High Speed Industrial Doors:
The History
Using innovative technology and
manufacturing, high speed doors
have evolved into high performance,
high cycle, and low maintenance
products that can be used in a wide
variety of applications.
Today, high speed doors are a vital
part of the global industrial market.
11
High Speed Industrial
Doors
The Benefits
12
High Speed Industrial Doors:
The Benefits
High Speed Doors improve on traditional doors by adding new
elements of functionality.
• Higher speeds
• Save time and money
• Increased durability
• Improved reliability
High Speed Doors are typically larger, operate at higher cycles,
and incorporate advanced safety features. High Speed Doors
are the high value alternative to traditional doors.

Editor's Notes

  1. Course Objectives: To educate the architectural community on using high performance industrial doors and to gain knowledge and understanding about the history of the high performance industrial door industry. Become aware of the benefits that high performance industrial doors offer (vs. conventional rolling metal doors) Increase workflow Reduce operational costs Reduce energy costs Enhance safety of employees, products, equipment Enhance security Show examples of high performance industrial door applications in various industries Understand the basic features/options that high performance doors offer Glossary to define terms related to high performance industrial doors
  2. 1968 Bernt Manns, an engineer at the paper machine clothing plant discovered an ingenious new use for the fabrics manufactured there. He designed a door with a fabric panel that would rapidly roll up and down quickly sealing the door’s opening. He put this drawing together ….. A unique counterbalance system kept the door closed tight and made for remarkably smooth operation. This groundbreaking technology produced a door that could open and close faster than any other industrial-use door in history.
  3. ….. with the drawing of the idea how to balance the door, this was the first step toward the invention of the Rapid Roll doors.
  4. This door was delivered in September 1975 and is still running today. The first high speed doors entered the North American market in the early 80’s
  5. The following slides will discuss high speed industrial door benefits
  6. High Speed Doors improve on traditional doors by adding new elements of functionality. higher speeds save time and money increased durability improved reliability High speed doors are typically larger, operate at higher cycles, and incorporate advanced safety features. High performance doors are the high value alternative to traditional doors.
  7. high speed industrial door Applications
  8. In selecting a high speed door the basic choices are: high speed metal high speed fabric doors High speed rubber doors
  9. Separate work areas: dividing the interior of an industrial building into separate zones is vital. They effectively reduce the transmission of dust, sound, and heat or cold from one area to another. Reduce transmission of contaminants Conserve environmental conditions Save heating and/or cooling costs Minimize sound transfer Improve material flow Increase productivity. with fast opening and closing speeds high performance industrial doors help to expedite material flow through the door opening. Products move from zone to zone more quickly improving workplace productivity.
  10. High Performance Doors can be designed to divide the machinery in working areas within a manufacturing process enhancing safety and improving work flow. These types of doors are often built for food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, transportation manufacturing, or any industry where assembly lines and machine protection are vital to the manufacturing process.
  11. Exterior openings require a rugged and reliable door. High Performance Doors are engineered with heavy duty steel and/or aluminum components, strong door panels, and superior drive and control systems. These doors can be applied in a wide variety of exterior applications that call for frequent in and out traffic and/or secured access. High-cycle life Keep out harsh conditions Save heating and/or cooling costs Improve material flow Increase productivity Enhance security
  12. high speed industrial doors features and options
  13. The unique DiscDrive technology provides extraordinary speed while reducing excessive wear, vibration and noise during operations. Eliminates slat-on-slat contact Smooth opening and closing Quiet operation
  14. Basic Features/Options of high performance industrial doors Opening and closing speeds –Opening speeds range from 30” per second to 100” per second and varies per door type and application Size - varies per door type and application Side frames- galvanized steel, anodized extruded aluminum, extruded plastic or stainless steel Door panel – ranges from durable flexible fabric to anodized extruded aluminum Safety features Contactless reversing edge – pre-running photo cell that detects objects in the door path and immediately reverses the door before making contact Light Curtain – A series of light beams spanning the width and specific height of the door. Light beam detects objects in the door path and reverses the door panel. In line photo cell – photo cell mounted at the base of the opening that detects objects in the door path and immediately reverses the door panel Reversing edge – Electric or Pneumatic reversing edge reverses the door panel when an object impacts the bottom edge Drive unit and Control system- Simple to use control system features technology that enhances performance and results in less wear on the door components during operation Bottom beam – Offers various break-away features that reduce downtime, maintenance and repair costs Wind resistance – Wind tabs, ribs or bars used to improve wind resistance Emergency chain host- Enables the door to be manually opened during power outage Manual release- Enables the door to be manually opened during power outage Vision panels and windows Colors- Powder coated Choice of various RAL colors Actuators Panel switch Remote push button Pull cord Radio transmitter/receiver Floor loop Photocell Approach sensor Horns Lights Key switch Selector switch
  15. Vector Control systems are modular systems which can be configured for a wide range of applications and customer requirements. Highly flexible, modular, configurable and programmable platform Vector Control provides smooth S-curve door movement Graphical User Interface Simple setup and troubleshooting Attractive appearance Cost Savings – Ease of installation
  16. Chemical, weather and puncture resistant Double-layer of woven polyester monofilament coated and impregnated with PVC Not sealed, sliced or joined Easy to clean not seamed, spliced or joined.
