Let’s look at ABS and the contributions made to the A.I. industry over time. This history can be found in your manual.
A.I. is not new; it has been used for centuries, as a way to get coveted genetics.
Mr. Prentice started with chickens and then Guernsey cows, because of his commitment to the industry many of the tools we now take for granted were developed. He believed that competition was the best way to make improvements, ultimately benefiting the customer. At the time the industry consisted of county co-ops because of the need to use fresh semen, and they wanted to regionalize thereby removing any competition.
Mr. Prentice focused on People, Programs, and Products.
In addition, the company needed capital and as a private business must show a profit.
ABS was the first in the industry to convert completely to frozen semen, in 1958, our competitors followed in the years to come. This conversion allowed ABS to consolidate the multiple bull studs into one location and expand the use of the best bulls.
Here’s the first calf born from frozen semen, appropriately named don’t you think?
The first units would store semen for one week, today we have units that store semen for 6 months.
These standards are non-negotiable, and are what make breeders around the world have confidence that they will enjoy good pregnancy rates.
Progeny testing allows us to give producers accurate information as to a bull’s strengths.
Mr. Prentice financed the first USDA Sire Summary. This was done to find out if the bulls being used really were of high genetic value and establish a way to rank them.
Mr. Prentice brought Dr. Bob Walton to ABS to develop the progeny test program, he later became President of ABS.
These consolidations improved efficiencies.
This is what ABS looked like in 1965.

Impact sires such as VALIANT are developed by the special mating of superior parents.
In the 1960’s and early 1970’s beef producers only access to the exotics was by using A.I. An exciting time in the A.I. industry.
ABS became a major force in the global industry in the 1990’s.
ABS expertise is valued around the world.

Develop the best pedigrees, select the best individuals to progeny test, and then maximize the use of the best sires.
