Natural disasters have a disproportionate impact on those living in poverty in developing countries. When natural disasters strike, the poor lose all their assets and have more difficulty accessing relief aid. They also live in more hazardous areas with lower quality housing, making them vulnerable to disease. From an ethical perspective, natural disasters violate the rights of the poor to basic needs like food and shelter, and they have to wait longer to receive relief aid.
