Mănăstirea Agapia was built between 1642-1644 by Hatmanul Gavril Coci in Vasile Lupu's time. The church interior was painted by Nicolae Grigorescu between 1858-1861 before he studied in Paris. The monastery houses a miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary given to Alexandru cel Bun by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Paleolog. It also has a medieval art and religious museum and a library with over 12,000 volumes.
