3. THE CATHEDRAL There is evidence of a pre-Romanesque temple from 977. The Romanesque church was consecrated in 1070 and it is stated that it was “the most famous temple in the entire world”. From this time the three apses, the bell tower, some pieces from the cloister, the cellar and the canons’ dining hall, (these days used for different events) have been preserved. The cathedral today is Gothic and it was begun at the end of the 13th century and finished in the 17th century. On the left of the transept there is the chapel of Mercè with a Baroque altar from the artist Carles Morató. On the right there is the venerated image of la Mare de Deú Del Claustre from the 12th century and catalogued as one of the most important Catalan Romanesque sculptures. The virgin’s chapel was enlarged in the 20th century by August Font. The facade follows some modernist lines.

4. THE ICE WELL It was built a long time ago, but the first documents are from 1683. It was used until the end of 19th century. From December to March, the ice was kept into the ice well and from March to November the ice was sold.

5. Bishop ’s palace BISHOP'S PALACE A building constructed by the bishop Lasala in the 18th century. Its façade, as the Virreina Palace in Barcelona, are examples of the Neoclassical Catalan style. Inside the palace you can visit the regional museum where there are rooms dedicated to some of the most important collections of pre-historic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque art. There is also a room dedicated to the salt sculptures from the salt mines in Cardona.

6. THE TOWN HALL This building is a somber one, built out of carved stone at the beginning of the 16th century at the transition stage between Gothic and Renaissance. On the facade there is the city’s shield and the merchant’s shield who had the building built. By the Town Hall there is Sant Pau Street which is an old Jewish quarter.

7. LLOBERA PALACE It is a gothic building of the 15th century. A woman called “Francesca de Llobera” left her fortune to build a hospital for poor people. This building was used as a hospital, a university, a school, and now, it is “El Consell Comarcal” and there is the tourism office.
