Human-centred design (HCD) is sweeping business because of the way it profoundly reconfigures how companies develop strategy, solve their most pressing problems and successfully compete in an era of constant change.
But is there any hard evidence that HCD has a measurable impact?
There is. Design Management Institute found that S&P 500 companies who use HCD outperform their competitors by 211 percent. Forrester Research found that organizations with sophisticated HCD capabilities can deliver an ROI of 85% or greater on their innovation initiatives.
Join Tom Merrill, Master Facilitator at ExperiencePoint, for a 45-minute webinar to learn:
The foundations of HCD and how the approach can be used across an organization to drive customer-centricity, innovation and people-led transformation
The fundamental steps required to build a design-led organization, including how to sell HCD internally
How innovative companies are using HCD as a competitive advantage to drive record growth and success
The potential barriers to innovation and how to overcome them
An approach to measure the overall impact of HCD in practice

Here you get a look at my current thoughts on innovation through a presentation that I will give tomorrow at the Turkey Innovation Week, where I am one of the keynote speakers.
It is a long talk – 1 hour – so I have compiled lots of content in this presentation. Yes, it might even have too many messages, but I hope the participants at the conference as well as those of you, who are just checking out the presentation, can find some inspiration in it without feeling overloaded with information.
Some of the topics I get into are:
• The current state of innovation and the global megatrends that impacts it
• A definition on open innovation and the benefits that come along with it
• Innovation as a career choice – what you need to succeed for this
• My perception of innovation in Turkey (not elaborated, just one case)
• How intrapreneurship can bring together idea and people management
I hope you find it worthwhile your time.

Developed by students at Stanford University, the Design Thinking approach was created to establish a new way to grow innovative products, processes and services. The Design Thinking process consists of six iterative stages which enable participants to seek flexible solutions and innovations concerning the issue they treat.
One important aspect of Design Thinking is the creation and cultivation of ideas within a well-coordinated team. Thus, the team spirit is a decisive element during Design Thinking operations and encourages to produce the best possible results. In addition to the team side of Design Thinking, a flexible and productive environment is crucial to develop inventive ideas and products. The more workable an environment, is the easier it is for employees to visualize and transmit thoughts and new concepts.

Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.

Welcome everybody, thank you for being here.
This coming 20 minutes I will shortly tell you about my experience and learnings from these last 9 months as a graduate student at Deloitte Innovation
Most of you know Deloitte as a big corporate professional services firm with lots of man in grey suits. Deloitte Innovation is there to get them out of there comfort zone and inspire them about innovation.
by inspiring people and
by developing new innovations.
This project is about supporting these inspired people to develop new ideas for innovations.
So how does innovating work at deloitte?
Deloitte innovation is a seperate entity within the company who gives people the opportunity to develop an idea into an innovation.
The person with the idea can work full time on his project at the innovation department like an internal startup
This process of developing an innovation can be modeled as follows:
They distinguish 3 phases:
the ideation, in which an idea gets to life
the incubation phase, in which an idea is developed into an innovation
And the commercialization phase. Where innovation are brought back to deloitte
Within this process we identified 2 initial issues:
problems of intercepting ideas within the business, so …..
problems supporting the people within the ideation phase, to finally get at the incubator. So…..
Another related problem is that of bringing innovations back to the business. So…..
Within this project we aimed to find out how the people in the process experience these issues.
This leaded towards a solution, a new program fromout Deloitte Innovation. That will be introduce in the next movie:
So imagine you are working within Deloitte as an accountant.
As I introduced, we started with 2 initial problems but in the scope we decided to take into account only the problems in the ideation-phase.
They just want better innovations and they want more
Supporting employees show how the process is..

I translated it in these factors of innovation:
Process, ideas, people (in relation with context)
I approached it from macro perspective and micro perspective
Explain
In order to understand these problems in the ideation phase a thorough understanding of the whole innovation landscape
The approach for the project was to undertstand the total landscape of innovation within a corporate environment.
Therefore in all phaes we take both an macro perspective and a micro perspective which al
The project is approached from different perspectives:
Next to that the macro level that from an organizational perspective and a micro level that of tha individual perspective.
During the whole project
5 factors of innovation in general were identified an are take into account
So let’s start to sharpen our lens and see what literature is saying about the different factors and perspectives of innovation.
I did a lot of research for this project,Namely a thorough literature research, informal interviews with coleagues, expert interviews with people that know a lot about design.
But the main research is based on these 6 interviewees. All part of the innovation projects.

Help from people, People within deloitte…
Prof. Van de Ven.. Acknowledged these 4 problems of innovation in the process.
Human problem: attention for innovation double loop learning
Process problem: the same of ideation
Structural problem relate to frido
Strategic problem: from leadership and create leadership yourself

Their work comes at risk
Misinterpretation on the long term and short term expectation
Loose face in the business
As you saw in the movie, an idea is a bridge between a problem and a solution
The process of creating ideas by people is through discovery of the problem and invention of the solution.
Designers go much more abstract i their discovery that business people and engineeers.
They also diverge more widely
This is the design process from an abstract level
And how deloitte innovation should understand it.
They were too much focussed on
But how do we make them
Deloitte innovation has as most companies a stagegatemodel to manage their innovation process.
This model indicates stages in which an innovation is developed. There are gates which are the traffic light in which an innovation is measured.
This is a way to manage innovation but maybe not the people…
Uit difficult to put in a sequencing line.
What I learned from literature is that innovation cannot be settled in different sequential stages and that especially innovation project are much more fluid and iterative.
4 different phases can be identified within innovation process initiation, design engineering and realisation, these different phases start at the samen time but one of them is always the most dominant. So there is always a little initiation in the designphase and always a littel realisation in the initaiton phase.
This helps us to understand how innovation actually works within a company and that modelling a process of innovation cannot be done sequencing.
Same is in deloitte…
Crossan … based on a theory of an organizational learning framework..
Learning Pushed to write a businessplanFyke or Funnel?
Design Dialogues help them to get through this group level and to integrate other people in this group level..
I translated this towards this overview
Design thinking is about the ideas
Design acting is about the people
And this is actually the process.
Deloitte Innovation are the facilitators for this group.
As you saw in the movie..
I want them to design it themselve
That s why I let them
There are many tools out there
