Adiponectin is a 244 amino acid protein hormone secreted by adipose tissue. It regulates glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown. Adiponectin levels are higher in females than males and are inversely related to obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance. The protein is encoded by the ADIPO gene and circulates in trimer, hexamer, and higher molecular weight forms after post-translational modification. Adiponectin increases fatty acid oxidation, lowering free fatty acids and preventing insulin resistance. Deficiencies can contribute to heart disease and metabolic disorders. Exercise and certain foods and beverages like fish oil, coffee, and dark chocolate can increase adiponectin levels.
