The legend of Adlaj Vav step-well tells of a queen who agreed to marry a Muslim ruler if he completed the well for her. When it was finished but for the dome, she drowned herself rather than marry him. The step-well was built in the 15th century and has 5 levels connected by 344 steps, with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting kings, gods, and daily life. It served both ritualistic and practical purposes by providing water and a cool refuge from the summer heat.
