Mid Calder Primary School is implementing a new Anytime, Anywhere Learning (AAL) program that allows students to use their own digital devices to support learning both in school and at home. The school aims to prepare students for future jobs and technologies through this initiative. Each class has access to laptops, netbooks, and iPads to enhance learning. The benefits of the Bring Your Own Device program include developing responsible digital citizenship skills, personalized learning, and improved home-school connections. The school has addressed parental concerns by emphasizing that device use is optional and that school technologies will still be available. A trial of the program is underway with uptake rates ranging from 12% to 65% across grades.

Lost, stolen or damaged devices:
- Trust each other
- Take responsibility for our device and respect
other children’s property

- Have a protective cover for your device

- Only take photos of yourself and your work

- Be responsible when taking photos and videos to
ensure they are appropriate

Miss Burton and Miss Thompson shared our
action plan. The key questions asked were:
- What if someone doesn’t have a device?
- What if BYOD becomes a competition to
bring in the best/latest device?

To keep our devices safe, we decided to
ask for funding to lock our devices away
over break and lunch.
We are currently investigating this with
West Lothian Council.

20. Parent Concerns
Following the BYOD contract being sent out,
a few parental concerns that have arisen
are:
- What if my child feels left out because they
don’t have a device to use in school?

these concerns
- Class discussions about BYOD and the
fact it is optional, so not everyone will
choose to take part
- School devices available to use
- Technical Troopers will be monitoring
children’s social and emotional wellbeing
regularly

Devices will:
- Only be used in the classroom when
instructed by the teacher
- Be the responsibility of the pupil both
inside and outside of school

- Pupils do not have to bring in a device
- Older or unused devices would be perfect
- Devices must be connected to the secure,
password protected AAL network to
access the internet. If the device has 3G
or 4G, this should be turned off.

25. What if something goes
wrong?
- BYOD is a trial, so we know there will be
challenges along the way
- Our Responsible Use Contract is in place to
keep the children, staff and devices safe
- There will be sanctions if the contract is broken
- Parents, pupils and staff will be asked for
feedback at the end of the year
