It outlines that students will build on their AS level work by looking more critically at the contexts of media production and consumption and key media theories. The course consists of two units - Unit 3 assesses analysis of unseen texts and media topics through a written exam. Unit 4 involves a critical investigation and linked practical production on an area of the student's choice. Some tips are provided such as taking notes, engaging actively with media, and using available resources. Coursework and homework are expected to be on time.

2. For A2 you will build on the work you did at AS Level and
look more fully at the contexts of media production and
consumption. We will focus on why as well as how texts are
created. We will be approaching texts more critically and
looking in more detail at the work of key media theorists.

5. Unit 3 (MEST3) is assessed by 2 hour written examination.
There are two sections:
A - Three compulsory questions on unseen texts
B - One essay from a choice of two topics:
Representations in the media
The impact of new/digital media

7. RESEARCH&PRODUCTION
Practical unit worth 80 marks (25%)
Two sections:
Critical Investigation (48 marks)
Linked production piece (32 marks)

8. CRITICALINVESTIGATION
Written report of approx. 2000 words or equivalent material
presented in another format. Linked to your practical
production. This should be an investigation or piece of
research into an area of your choice. You will need to collect
appropriate evidence and reach a coherent conclusion based
on this.

9. LINKEDPRODUCTION
Your practical production should follow directly from your
critical investigation. For instance if the focus of your critical
investigation is the representation of female beauty in fashion
magazines then your linked piece might be to produce a
mock up of a new fashion magazine.

10. SOME TIPS!
• Take notes: Lined paper or latest new fangled techno-gadget is fine. Please don’t tell me how good
your memory is...it will not wash!
• Take an active interest in the media, your parents/siblings/cat/love interest (delete as applicable)
might think you are odd for jotting down notes when watching television or stealing pages from
magazines and newspapers but I urge you to do it!
• There is a well stocked bookshelf in Room 12 - It is not there to make the media department look
intelligent (we can do that all by ourselves), please make use of it!
• All lesson slides and notes are available on slideshare.net/kksmedia .There are also links and useful
resources on Moodle.
• Homework/Coursework on time please - I have very little zero patience for Y13 students who
can’t get work in on time and you will find yourself in supervised study unless you have a very
good excuse.
