DESCRIPTION
 Body extremely elongated & slightly compressed .
 Eyes rather small,cheeks long.
 Lower beak slightly longer than the upper.
 Lateral line near the lower profile.
 Greenish above, flanks greenish silvery, grading to whitish below.
 Maximum length is recorded 40 cm in total length .
EXTERNAL FEATURES
 Type of fins :
Fin without spine.
Dorsal fin : Inserted opposite the
origin of the anal fin.
Pectoral fin : Short & inserted high up
on the sides.
 Type of scale : Small cycloid & deciduous.
 It has a very slender, long mouth lined
with razor-sharp teeth.
HABITS AND HABITATS
 Predetaor, live feeder, aggressive.
 Occurs primarily in rivers,also in
ponds,beels,canals and inundated fields.
 Often found in slow-flowing pools in
rivers with rock or sand substrates.
 Inhabits large and medium-sized rivers
with adults occurring in areas that lack
floating vegetation.
 Oviporous,lays eggs on the underside of
leaves.

This fish is surface feeder.
Feeds on live fish tadpoles,
shrimp, cricket and other

 It is of minor commercial significance.
 It is also popular as a medicinal fish in some villagers.
 Market price of the fish is comparatively cheap.
 It is also a potential aquarium fish.
Ecological role
Act as a
predator in
the surface
layer of the
ecosystem.
Status & conservation
 Not considered as threatened in
the RED LIST of IUCN
Bangladesh (2000) .
 Establishment of sanctuaries and
ban on fishing at strategic
location , along with judicious
enforcement of the Fish
Conservation Acts are needed to
consereve the kakila population.
