Freshwater is water containing less than 1% salt, including water found on the Earth's surface and underground. There are three types of freshwater: lentic water found in still bodies like ponds and lakes; lotic water in flowing bodies like streams and rivers; and wetlands like swamps and marshes saturated with water. Freshwater covers about 3% of total water on Earth, with about 0.3% as surface water and the rest as ice caps and glaciers or groundwater. Problems affecting freshwater include loss of habitat, pollution, and overuse of resources.
