The bighead carp is a large, scaleless freshwater fish native to large rivers in Asia and parts of Africa. It can reach lengths of 60cm. Scientifically known as Aristichthys nobilis, it is one of the most important aquaculture species due to its fast growth rate and ability to breed well in captivity. As a filter feeder that consumes zooplankton, phytoplankton, and detritus, it helps control water pollution and competing species while being an important source of protein for humans.

conservation:
•Similar to the closely-related silver
carpHypophthalmichthysmolitrix, the
bighead carp is a filter feeder that
prefers larger river habitats. In the
united states bighead carp are
frequently stocked into catfish
culture ponds.
