Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources which are replenished
such as wind, wave, solar, biomass and tidal power. Governments and companies around the
world are investing heavily in developing technologies to harness the power of clean
renewable energy sources because of their potential to produce large quantities of energy
without generating greenhouse gases which can contribute to climate change. Most of the
power generation in India is carried out by conventional energy sources, coal and mineral oilbased
power plants which contribute heavily to greenhouse gases emission.

biomass. The most common advantage of each is that they are renewable and cannot be

An energy audit is an inspection survey and an analysis of energy flows for energy conservation in a building. It may include a process or system to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively affecting the output. In commercial and industrial real estate, an energy audit is the first step in identifying opportunities to reduce energy expense and carbon footprint.

A Review of Restructured Power Development and Reform Programme in Indiaijiert bestjournal
The power sector is one of the most important infrastructural aspec ts of the Indian economy. But of late,it has been facing some serious problems such as old worn-out and poor distributi on network leading to frequent outages,skewed tariff structure,huge Transmission & Distribution (T &D) losses largely due to outright theft & unmetered supply,high LT/HT line ratio,overloaded DT/ Lines,lack of accountability at feeder level and in distribution setup of State Electricity Boards (SEBs). Henc e,the Government identified Distribution Reforms as the key area to bring about the efficiency & commerc ial availability into the power sector. The Government took various initiatives in this direction;one of these is the introduction of Accelerated Power Development Programme (APDP) in February,2000. The main objective of thi s programme was to initiate a financial turnaround in the performance of the State owned power sector .
The need for enactment of Electricity Act 2003,was felt by the Central Government in the backdrop of the on going Economic Reforms in the country coupled with power sector reforms in various States.
Economy and Energy Security for Pakistan -What lies ahead
The Economic Survey of Pakistan recognizes that during 2012 around 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) was lost due to the power sector outages.
The petroleum crude and products contributed to a third of total imports of Pakistan during 2012

It is concerned with perspective planning and policy
formulation in the sector.

It generate, transmit and distribute electricity in
coordination with private/centrally owned generating
companies or any other relevant agency.

of power in a competitive market scenario by opening
access to transmission (from the outset) and

III. Transferring the full range of regulatory and licensing
functions to the Central and State Regulatory
Commissions.
IV. Deregulating tariffs in certain situations e.g. in case of
agreements between consumers and generating

14. Guidelines for procurement of
electricity
In compliance with section 63 of the Electricity Act, 2003, the Central
Government had notified guidelines for procurement of power by
Distribution Licensees through competitive bidding.

The Tariff Policy has been notified by Government of India on6
January, 2006 under the provisions of section 3 of the Electricity
Act, 2003.

• Rural Electrification Policy
Rural Electrification Policy, in compliance with section 4
and 5 of the Electricity Act 2003, was notified on 23
August, 2006.

• The Accelerated Power Development and Reform
Programme (APDRP) programme is being implemented
so that the desired level of 15 per cent AT&C (Aggregate
Technical and Commercial) loss can be achieved
(Currently it is 30%).

17. Future/Undergoing projects
• The Government of India is planning nine Ultra Mega
Power Projects (UMPP) of 4 GW each with an estimated
individual investment of US$ 4 billion (Rs. 192 billion).
Four of these projects are expected to be commissioned
between 2011 and 2017. The UMPP is an initiative by
the government to collaborate with power generation
companies to set up 4,000 MW projects to ease the
country’s power deficit situation.
• Private investment has been allowed in power
transmission either through 100per cent equity or joint
venture with PGCIL. In case of latter, the PGCIL will hold
only 26per cent stake and private party would hold the
rest.
