Donavon's story provides three key lessons for schools based on his experience as an urban high school student. First, listening to student voices can provide valuable perspectives on improving teaching and learning. Second, supportive relationships with caring teachers who have high expectations can help students build resilience. Third, including student voices in school decision-making can strengthen student engagement and school climate.
Effective leaders have distinct traits that transform them beyond just being leaders. While effective teachers or employees do not always make effective principals or supervisors, an effective leader can be developed by enhancing specific leadership traits. This article discusses the traits of an effective leader and how developing those traits can transform someone into an effective leader.

The document analyzes the impact of the Lemon v. Kurtzman Supreme Court decision over 35 years. [1] The Lemon decision established the three-prong "Lemon test" for determining if government actions violate the establishment clause regarding religion. [2] The test has remained the precedent for public school religion cases, though the Supreme Court has expanded its interpretation at times. [3] Dissenting opinions have emerged questioning the usefulness of the Lemon test and suggesting the Court may be moving toward a more flexible approach.

This document discusses the impact of high-stakes testing on English language learners in Texas public schools and the implications for the rest of the nation. It analyzes issues faced by ELL students and schools that educate large numbers of ELLs. While standardized tests are meant to improve achievement, they may not accurately measure learning for ELLs. The No Child Left Behind Act requires standardized testing but provides some flexibility. Research is needed on both positive and negative effects of testing on ELLs. The document also discusses accountability pressures on schools from high-stakes testing and ensuring learning is measurable.

This dissertation examines the impact of smaller learning communities (SLCs) on closing achievement gaps among student populations in Texas high schools. The study uses a quantitative method to compare student achievement, attendance, and completion rates between 21 career-themed SLC schools and 21 traditional high schools, as reported on the Academic Excellence Indicator System. Statistical analysis using ANOVA found no significant differences between SLC and traditional schools in English/reading or math achievement for ethnic and economically disadvantaged subgroups, or in overall attendance rates. The dissertation provides a review of literature supporting SLCs and the need to close achievement gaps.

Geothermal power generates electricity from steam produced underground. In New Zealand, nine geothermal power stations are located mostly in the Taupo area, with more planned in Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Hot steam turns turbines that spin to generate electricity, which then travels through power lines. This electricity could power school heaters since geothermal energy produces electricity that then runs through power lines into plugs and heaters.

1) The document provides a comprehensive overview of the historical foundations of education from ancient philosophers like Socrates and Plato through the development of educational systems in colonial America.
2) Education evolved significantly over time, from being limited to elite males studying classical texts, to the establishment of basic schooling requirements in the American colonies in the 1600s.
3) Educational approaches differed across regions, with the New England colonies emphasizing religious instruction, the southern colonies relying more on private tutoring, and the middle colonies featuring diverse religious schools.
A 17-year-old Kenyan woman became pregnant and was rejected by her community for not being married. A local women's group helped her by building her a hut, providing supplies, and supporting her during childbirth. They also helped her start a small business selling goods to support herself and her family. Though life is difficult for women who must fetch water and cook, through her business she has become a role model in her village and can now support herself and her family.

This document provides an overview of alcohol use and related health issues. It notes that alcohol is the most misused substance globally, consuming over 15% of national health budgets. Alcohol is linked to 50% of murders, 40% of violent acts, and more than 30% of rapes. While only 5-7% abuse alcohol, 10-20 million people need treatment. The majority of alcohol is consumed by men ages 20-29, with daily or near daily use reported by over 55% of female consumers and 68% of male consumers. On average, men and women consume 4.9 drinks containing 62 ml of alcohol during typical drinking occasions. Most countries focus on tertiary treatment for dependence rather than primary prevention or early intervention

Abstract: The study was conducted to assess quality of marital life among the wives of alcoholic dependents at selected de addiction center, Puducherry. A non experimental descriptive design was carried out and wives whose husbands meet with diagnostic criteria of alcoholic dependent syndrome as per ICD-10 were selected by using purposive sampling technique. In this study, the level of quality of marital life was assessed by using marital quality scale developed by Shah (1995).The results revealed that the percentage distribution level of quality of marital life among the wives of alcoholic dependents were with moderate quality of about 62%.
This document provides information about alcoholism (also known as alcohol use disorder) including its definition, signs and symptoms, stages of progression, diagnostic criteria, management, and complications. It begins with objectives of defining alcoholism, listing its phases and effects, and outlining management approaches. Introduction defines alcoholism and notes its prevalence among certain groups. Several factors that can contribute to risk of alcoholism are described like social, environmental, biological, and psychological factors. The document then outlines clinical stages of alcoholism from earliest to most advanced, lists diagnostic criteria, and discusses management strategies like detoxification and treatment. Complications of long-term alcohol dependence are also summarized.

This document summarizes key aspects of bipolar disorder, including:
1) Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurring manic or hypomanic episodes that alternate with depressive episodes. It exists on a spectrum from bipolar I to bipolar II disorder.
2) Bipolar disorder has a lifetime prevalence of around 2.4% worldwide and is associated with significant disability. However, it often goes undiagnosed for around 10 years.
3) People with bipolar disorder have high risks of suicide, psychiatric comorbidities, and medical comorbidities. They also face impairments in education, work and development due to the disorder.

The document discusses several risk factors for alcoholism and drug addiction. Some key risk factors include starting alcohol or drug use during adolescence, having a family history of substance abuse or experiencing abuse as a child, and having certain psychiatric or behavioral disorders. Adolescents who begin drinking or using drugs are much more likely to develop an addiction compared to those who begin later. Those with a family history of substance abuse or a personal history of abuse or neglect are also at higher risk. Certain psychiatric conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and ADHD can increase one's risk as well. Race and gender can also influence risk levels, though biological and cultural factors affecting risk among groups are not fully understood.
Slide Show: Risk Factors for Alcoholism & Drug AddictionHillside
Drug and alcohol addiction develops over time, but it often comes with copious warning signs before casual use grows into full-blown addiction. Even before a person uses, there are many signs that could indicate a person is more likely to fall into abusive patterns of drug use. While risk factors don’t necessarily mean that addiction is inevitable, it’s important for individuals to be aware of their risk level so their behavior will be more informed if they choose to engage in drug use. Watch our slide show for information and statistics about drug and alcohol abuse risk factors. For more information about seeking help with addiction recovery for yourself or a loved one, contact Hillside.
The document discusses factors that impact health and barriers to healthy behaviors. It finds that while most people define health broadly, there is a gap between knowledge and action. The top barriers to health are behavioral like lack of exercise and poor nutrition. Motivators of behavior change are social influences and information more than incentives. Half of those trying to change an unhealthy behavior relapse, with enjoyment of the behavior being the most common reason.
This document discusses diagnosis, prevention, and management of alcoholism. It covers social barriers to diagnosis, screening tools like the CAGE questionnaire, genetic testing showing a tendency towards addiction, DSM diagnosis criteria, urine and blood tests to detect alcohol use, prevention policies targeting teens, and management approaches including detoxification, psychological therapies, support groups, rationing programs, and medications.
This document discusses a study on the quality of life of adolescent children of alcoholics. It provides background information on alcohol consumption rates in India and Tamil Nadu. The abstract indicates that alcoholism and its effects on family members, including children, are quite problematic and can affect their quality of life. The document then reviews literature on factors that can influence the quality of life of children of alcoholics, such as parental relationships, social support, and whether the children themselves develop alcohol problems. It finds that while parental alcoholism may negatively impact children's development, outcomes are diverse and not all children of alcoholics struggle socially or with substance abuse issues themselves.
This document provides an overview of addiction, including its definition, models for understanding it, and comparisons to other health conditions. In 3 sentences:
Addiction is defined as a chronic disease characterized by impaired control over substance use and continued use despite consequences. It involves genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors and can be understood as a "hijacking" of the brain's reward system. Effective treatment requires viewing addiction similarly to other chronic health conditions like diabetes and hypertension that also often involve relapse and ongoing management.
This document provides a case study on bipolar disorder. It begins with objectives to define bipolar disorder, discuss concepts of nursing care, examine the brain's anatomy and physiology related to neurotransmitters, understand pharmacological treatments, and apply assessments and interventions. It then provides background on bipolar disorder prevalence and characteristics. The rationale for choosing this case and significance of studying it are discussed. The scope focuses on nursing and pharmacological management, with limitations due to confidentiality. Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Model is identified as the conceptual framework. Literature on the history and classifications of bipolar disorder is reviewed. The clinical summary provides demographic data and applies developmental theories to the case.
Alcoholism is characterized by physical and psychological dependence on alcohol that causes distress or harm. While many people drink alcohol regularly without negative consequences, around 7% of adults experience alcohol use disorder in a given year. The development of alcoholism involves genetic, developmental, and psychological factors. Alcoholism is also marked by the development of tolerance, meaning more alcohol is needed to feel effects, and withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. While the condition is complex and difficult to understand from the outside, treatment programs can help alcoholics overcome addiction by providing detox support and teaching new life and relapse prevention skills to achieve long-term sobriety.

This document from Similiacare.net discusses homeopathic approaches to chronic diseases. It divides chronic diseases into those with fully developed symptoms and few symptoms. Chronic diseases can be miasmatic or non-miasmatic, and miasmatic chronic diseases include psora, sycosis, syphilis, and combinations of these three miasmas. Localized one-sided diseases, pseudo chronic diseases, drug diseases, and occupational diseases are also mentioned.
Acute diseases can be individual, sporadic, or epidemic. Individual diseases attack one person and are transient explosions of latent psora brought on by factors like improper diet, physical stressors like chilling or overheating, or mental emotions. Sporadic diseases affect several people in an area due to meteoric or telluric influences. Epidemic diseases result from the same cause infecting many people at once, often due to large-scale calamities like war or famine.
A pilot study examined treatment of Chikungunya virus in 532 patients. The age distribution analysis found that 39% of patients were between 40-60 years old, while those between 10-20 and 20-40 each made up around 18-19% of cases. The fewest cases were in patients over 80 years old and those under 10, who comprised 3% and 6% of patients, respectively.

The document discusses acute diseases and their treatment in homeopathy. It defines acute diseases as those that are rapid in onset, intense in symptoms, and short to moderate in duration, ending in recovery or death. It classifies acute diseases and discusses how their development and progression is influenced by miasms. It emphasizes that acute diseases are manifestations of chronic miasms. It provides guidelines for prescribing in acute cases, focusing on activity, thermals, thirst, and mentals rather than just physical symptoms, and following the principles of single remedy, minimum dose.
The document provides guidance on case evaluation and analysis to select the most appropriate homeopathic remedy. It discusses the 7 steps to reach the remedy which include case taking, finding the essential totality, sectarian totalities for disease/patient/person, decision on what to treat, selecting the best remedy, potency selection, and withstanding temptations. It also provides tips for effective repertorization and determining miasmatic constitutions to reach the genetic constitutional remedy.
Homoeopathy is presented as the fore runner of modern science by applying principles at the microscopic level. It works based on the concepts of vital force, levels of action, and electropositivity and negativity to cure diseases. Key homoeopathic concepts discussed include drug provings, drug dynamisation, and the principle of similia similibus curentur. The document differentiates the homoeopathic and allopathic approaches and states that modern medicine works at the root/atomic level, like homoeopathy. It provides examples of common homoeopathic remedies.
The document discusses the concept of suppression in homeopathy and how it can occur when the correct simillimum is not found or the cardinal principles are not followed strictly. Suppression occurs when the disease is weakened in one area but ends up strengthening in another, more important system. This happens through the 7 layers of suppression which track the progression of disease from skin to nervous system based on embryological development. Identifying and understanding the layers of suppression is important for homeopaths to avoid suppressive treatments and ensure cure by following Hering's law of cure.
The document discusses various aspects of miasms and their application in homeopathic practice. It begins by describing the three main miasms - psora, sycosis, and syphilis. It then discusses identifying features, common disorders, desires, aggravations/aversions, perspiration, sleep patterns, and other generals for each miasm. It emphasizes using a three-layered and 18-layered compendium approach to categorize symptoms and interpret rubrics based on the six main miasms: psora, sycosis, syphilis, sycotic, tubercular, and cancer. The document provides guidance on interpreting mental symptoms and applying a 42-rubric
This document discusses the laws and principles of homeopathic posology, which is the study of dosage in homeopathy. It covers the evolution of concepts of minimum dose from Hahnemann's early use of large doses to infinitesimal doses. Guidelines from different homeopaths on potency and dose selection are provided. The preparation, application and repetition of infinitesimal doses are examined. Factors affecting susceptibility and guidelines for potency and dose selection are outlined.
The document discusses the three main miasms - psora, sycosis, and syphilis. Psora is associated with the color blue and features like mousy hair, small closed ears, and long neck. It can cause allergies, dry eruptions, and functional disorders. Sycosis is associated with the color yellow and features like proliferation everywhere and a moon-shaped face. It can cause proliferative diseases and viral diseases. Syphilis is associated with the color red and features like a dumbbell-shaped face and frontal baldness. It can cause destructive disorders, ulcers, degenerations, and autoimmune diseases.
The document discusses miasmatic repertorization in homeopathy, emphasizing the importance of determining the underlying miasm (psora, sycosis, syphilis, tuberculosis) in order to select the most appropriate rubrics and remedy. It provides examples of rubrics and characteristics that indicate each miasm, such as reserved behavior indicating syphilis or loquacity indicating sycosis. Pathological presentations are also discussed as pointers towards the underlying miasm. The goal is to approach cases from a miasmatic perspective to achieve deeper and longer lasting healing.
This document provides a summary of repertory case taking guidelines from Hahnemann's Organon of Medicine aphorisms 83-86. It discusses taking an unbiased individualized case history, arranging symptoms systematically, and eliciting precise details about each symptom such as timing, location, sensations, and aggravating/relieving factors. The document then provides several case examples and rubrics.

The biomechanics of running involves the study of the mechanical principles underlying running movements. It includes the analysis of the running gait cycle, which consists of the stance phase (foot contact to push-off) and the swing phase (foot lift-off to next contact). Key aspects include kinematics (joint angles and movements, stride length and frequency) and kinetics (forces involved in running, including ground reaction and muscle forces). Understanding these factors helps in improving running performance, optimizing technique, and preventing injuries.
