A new method for detecting leaks in underground water pipelines
1. A NEW METHOD FOR DETECTING LEAKS IN
UNDERGROUND WATER PIPELINES
Abstract:
In most water distribution systems, a fairly sizable amount of water is lost because of
leaks and faults in pipes. For this reason, the individuation of leaks is extremely important for the
optimization and rationalization of water resources. However, the techniques and methodologies
that are currently used for the individuation of leaks, despite being universally accepted, are
extremely time-consuming and require highly-experienced personnel. Additionally, such
techniques become unreliable and ineffective when the measurements are not performed in
specific operating conditions of the pipe (e.g., high water pressure). On this basis, in this paper, a
sensor based system for the non-invasive detection of leaks in underground metal pipes is
presented. The proposed system is validated through experimental campaign that consisted in
carrying out a leak-detection survey through the traditional methods and through the proposed
method.
Existing System:
At present, damages including corrosion, welding flaw, vibration and scour, pipeline leak
appears at the linking position between the flange and screw, and this serious trend is rising. At
some places manmade destroys and pilferages exist as well. This is not an efficient way to detect
fault, if it occurred in the human less areas. So we go for proposed system.
Proposed System:
In the proposed system acoustic sensor and Zigbee technology is used for identifying the
leaks in pipeline. The output of Acoustic Sensor is compared and the comparator output is given
to the 8051 Microcontroller. The microcontroller transmits the status to the Receiver section
through Zigbee. In the receiver section the status is received and uploaded in the Internet. The
users can directly see the information by entering the site.
