This presentation provides an overview of a Metacognitive Approach to Social Skills Training program that teaches students to self-direct, self-monitor, self-evaluate, and self-correct their social behaviors. Through this program, students learn metacognitive skills to evaluate social situations and choose their own appropriate behaviors rather than fitting to models. The program can be taught by teachers or counselors to fourth through twelfth grade students needing social skills help and supports initiatives like character education, positive behavior supports, social emotional learning, and response to intervention that have shown social skills training improves academic success.
