The document describes a blended learning approach for study days on administering intra-muscular injections. It discusses creating an online component to deliver theoretical knowledge, allowing more study days to be run with less staff time. Students complete the online self-directed learning at their own pace before attending the classroom practical skills session. A survey found students felt the content was relevant, increased their confidence, and the online preparation enhanced the classroom learning. The blended approach addresses external pressures while maintaining educational quality and improving the student experience.
Developing graduates for an innovative and modern agricultural sectorNieky van Veggel
Presentation delivered at the International scientific-practical conference on development issues of innovative economy in the agricultural sector, Samarkand Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 25-26 March
In any given semester, course content should be properly communicated to the students in an organised manner to ensure the learning outcomes are met within the limited time. A 'lesson plan' becomes handy in this situation.
A lesson plan is a tool and a model for structuring an individual lesson. It provides strategies for efficiently putting together content needed for teaching; the amount of time spent in each topic and what supporting tools can be used. Other advantages of a lesson plan is that it ensures the consistency of teaching from one semester to another. Also if there are multiple lecturers teaching the same unit, they can use the same patterns and tools for teaching.
In this presentation, Menik Tissera uses an example of her own lesson plan to demonstrate how to effectively create and use one.
Strategic e-learning questions:
Pure or blended online education?
Teacher driven or automatized services?
Individual, collaborative or cooperative learning?
Synchronous or asynchronous communication?
Paced or unpaced progression?
Fixed or flexible start-up?

Development of a multidisciplinary assignment - a first year engineering pilo...LearningandTeaching
Multidisciplinary teaching is a contemporary education strategy implemented by various tertiary institutions to stimulate students’ critical thinking, develop inter-disciplinary understanding, and enhance students’ problem solving skills. In this presentation, Dr Saad Odeh and Dr Muhammad Qureshi summarise the steps taken, as well as findings from a pilot study that investigated the development and implementation of a combined assignment from two first year units in the Engineering curriculum: “Foundation Mathematics” and “Introduction to Programming”.
The suggested assignment aimed to help students understand the link between these two disciplines. Case studies from the mechanical and civil engineering industry were selected to develop the pilot assignments. The mathematical rules applied in this assignment were introduced in brief in the assignment information sheet to give students guidelines to carry out further online research. The preliminary statistical results show improvement in students’ multi-disciplinary knowledge in the different units and enhancement in their industrial experience.

TELUS About it - Collaborative approaches to staff development, presentation for ALT-C 2013 at the University of Nottingham by Sarah Horrigan, James Little and Leiza Barthorpe, September 2013
For many managers, there is a real challenge both in managing remotely, and having confidence about the quality of remote or online delivery. Most managers have years of experience of managing campus based learning, and have had the benefit of peer and specialist support on site. However, few managers have the experience of teaching remotely, so supporting staff and recognising good delivery is a greater challenge. This session looks at adjustments to their management approach that may be helpful, and identifies some of the key characteristics of well delivered on line activity.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A blended learning approach for study days mdh thinktank
1. A blended learning approach for
study days:
Enhancing the learning experience
Mr James Little (Learning Technologist)
2. Background
• Administering intra-muscular injections:
Updating staff on IM injection technique, appropriate equipment, patient
preparation, pre- and post-assessment, and infection control issues.
• One full study day
• Variable delivery locations
• Repeated many times a year
• Resource intensive
• Combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills
3. General Considerations
„External‟ pressures Pedagogical
• Allow more effective • Allow student-led
use of time learning
• Allow more study days vs. • Self-identification of
to be run learning needs
• External pressures can be used as an opportunity to
reconsider current educational methods/pedgagogy
• Any changes should be appropriate, pedagogically
sound and advantage (or at least not disadvantage) the
student experience.
4. Rationale for blended learning
External Pressures
• Staff time commitments reduced once online
learning created
• Allows more study days to run
• Enables students to attend more easily (half day
vs. full day of leave from work)
5. Rationale for blended learning
Pedagogical
Study day split into:
Theoretical knowledge Practical skills
• Online self-directed learning • Classroom based tutor-led
• Work through learning at their • More effective use of the
own pace time as already prepared
• Test their own working
knowledge prior to attendance
• Self-identify further learning
needs.
6. Creating blended learning
Pedagogical
• Study resources already
written
• Re-evaluated for online
learning
• Course Notes
• MCQs (self-test)
• Links to further reading
• Specific break-up of topic
areas
7. Creating blended learning
Technical
• Created in MOODLE
• Lots of options/future flexibility
• Students self-enrol to access,
bypassing central registrations
issues
11. Student Feedback
January - May 2011, 251 students
Much needed update/refresher provided in a relaxed and supportive
atmosphere.
Further reading could be easily accessed via online course.
Evidence-based content, linking theory to practice.
Online component was excellent preparation for classroom session.
Information on how to give IM injections in different sites seen as
extremely valuable.
Content of study days was relevant to students‟ current practice and
increased their confidence in performing IM injections.
12. Summary
• It is possible to respond to a „changing environment‟ and
deliver an improvement to the student experience
• Pedagogical considerations need to be central, if not the
main driver of change
• External pressures can be used as an opportunity to
rejuvenate currently in-place educational
methods/pedagogy
13. Summary
• It is possible to “do more with less”. After an initial
investment of time to create the online component
tutor-led teaching time has been reduced by half.
BUT:
• This is not at the expense of the overall amount of learning being
reduced.
• On longer courses and tutor-led online activity this may not be
the case
• Freed-up time could either be used for further enriching teaching
or organisational needs
• Most importantly, the student experience and outcomes
have been improved
14. The future…
• Re-appraising all existing study days within department
• Need ability to be flexible
• Delivery
• Technology choices
(non-standard student access to MOLE?)
