5. Let me end this editori-
al in the words of Hen-
ry Ford, who said:
“Coming together is a
beginning; keeping
together is progress;
working together is
success”
While preparing the 9th
issue of our ebulletin
“Open Spaces”, I can-
not help but feel proud
of the voluntary work
done by the Board and
the members of our
Union. As the years
progressed, we man-
aged to keep up with
the modern trends in
education, to support
our members pedagog-
ically and morally, to
develop synergies with
new organisations
while maintaining our
traditional ‘allies’, to
overcome the pandem-
ic wave and stay afloat,
to show solidarity to the
local society and host
inspirational speakers.
In 2020 we were the
first and only Union in
Greece to organize an
online one-day seminar
showcasing good prac-
tices of our colleagues,
among other online
events, while 2021 was
devoted to the celebra-
tion of 200 years from
the Greek Revolution,
with Luke Prodromou
delivering a workshop
on the topic “The Eng-
lish Romantic Poets
and the Greek Revolu-
tion of 1821” followed
by an educational pro-
gram supported by the
Directorate of Primary
and Secondary Educa-
tion of Serres region.
Later that year, we
urged our colleagues to
‘Explore London… with
orienteering’ in an ex-
periential, outdoor
event that gave us the
opportunity to meet
again in person after
months of isolation. We
ended 2021 by gather-
ing and offering books
and board games to
children with autism
hosted by the Associa-
tion of Parents and
Friends of Autistic Peo-
ple “Iliaxtida”.
The best is yet to
come. 2022 has been
launched with a webi-
nar supported by the
Department of Public
Affairs of the American
Embassy in Athens on
account of the Black
History Month and
Women’s day.
“‘Notable Black Women
in Literature and Poet-
ry’” will become the
springboard for the
new educational pro-
gram planned for the
English language
teacher in the near fu-
ture. We do hope that
you stay with us in the
Union’s new undertak-
ings!

Το κοινωνικό back-

ται boxed in, εγκλωβισμέ-
λοιπόν αυτή η επιλογή;
Ίσως η Ιλιάδα είναι, για τον
ήρωά, μια σταθερά σε έναν
κόσμο κατακερματισμένο,
δεκανίκι και προσωπείο.
‘Αισθάνομαι οτι τίποτε στη
ζωή μου δεν είναι αληθινό,
οτι ζω σε μια μυθοπλασία’,
παραδέχεται ο Σταυρινός
στο group therapy.

13. Do I need to be perfect or do I want to be a change maker?
Page 13
Issue 9 / 2021
I have been a teacher for the
past 27 years. I have
worked very hard to help my
students learn and to inspire
them to be and do better. It
is not always easy, though.
The last three years have
been a challenge for me. I
left the private sector and my
own English school to be-
come an English teacher in
the public sector. It was
exciting and scary to uproot
my entire life, my daily rou-
tines, and to leave the peo-
ple I loved and admired.
However, I knew I needed
the change. I needed to
have a less stressful life and
more time to spend with my
family, along with more time
for self-care. So, when the
opportunity arose, I accepted
a position in the public
school system.
No need to say that my life is
less stressful in most areas,
yet I still work like a crazy
person. I realized and have
accepted that that’s just who
I am, no matter how hard I
try to lessen my work load in
order to become a normal
person who works only when
they are at work. Now, being
stuck at home, working and
living during this difficult peri-
od of quarantine, I found
myself exhausted and on the
brink of a super major melt-
down. That is when I found
all of you, my ‘new’ col-
leagues, my fellow English
teachers.I joined an English
teachers Facebook group and
I realized that I am not alone
in this venture. It is nice to
know that there are people
around that are there to lend
a helping hand, that are there
to inspire you to become a
better teacher and to show
you all the many different
things that you didn’t even
know existed till now.
. I still find it challenging to
do better everyday, for my
students and for myself, but
at least now I know that
there are others just like me
who are passionate about
their work, who love what
they do and, therefore, have
become exceptional at it. I
now know that there are
those, people just like me,
who stay up late and can’t
sleep at night just because
their lesson wasn’t as won-
derful as they wanted it to
be.
What I have also learned
though is that we don’t need
to be perfect. That is just
our fear, our insecurities
talking. We need to inspire.
We need to uplift one anoth-
er in these challenging times.
We need to just do our best
and not be so hard on our-
selves!
I recently read somewhere
that we are here to make a
huge difference in the lives of
those around us and that we
should never underestimate
that. Our behaviour can be
something to model and our
good actions can inspire
others to follow suit. That is
what I experienced in the last
couple of weeks, and that is
what I know I will continue to
experience as long as I am in
the company of such won-
derful colleagues.
So, let’s be the change we
want to see in the world
[Gandi]. Let’s make a big
difference in the lives of our
students, our fellow English
teachers, and in the lives of
everyone we care about, by
just trying a little harder and
caring a little more each day.
Let’s be at peace with not
being perfect, but let’s be
change makers.

project that aims to support
film literacy by giving teach-
ers and their students (11 to
18 years old) the unique
opportunity to participate
actively in Film Education.
The project created an in-
teractive platform with a
catalogue of 10 films subti-
tled in eight languages
(English, French, German,
Greek, Italian, Polish, Span-

reflect the European identity
in its diversity. The project
is funded by the MEDIA

with ARTE Education and

their usefulness and worth. No
matter what the technical excel-
lence of any given film - its su-

highly emotionalized music or
sound, its theatrical excellence
- if the film fails in achieving the
educational purpose for which it
was selected, it is educational-

direction desired, it is relatively

The selection of the 10 films
was primarily based on the
selection criteria set by the

which were the following:
-Cultural interest of the film
-Critical success (selections,
festival awards)
-Commercial success (box-

18. Motivational strategies have
long been a noteworthy
issue in the area of English
as a foreign language (EFL)
education. It is generally
accepted that instructional
practices could encompass
motivational strategies, as
motivation is seen one of
the key factors determining
success in L2 acquisition.
However, fostering learners’
motivation, engagement
and excitement is not al-
ways an easy task, be-
cause learning behavior
varies significantly from one
student to another. As one
of the most researched
topics in the field of educa-
tion, motivational strategies
are viewed as the methods
and techniques used by
teachers to generate the
learners' motivation; to pro-
mote their goal-related be-
havior; to maintain ongoing
motivated behavior and
protect it from distracting or
competing action tenden-
cies (Dörnyei, 2001; Dö-
rnyei & Ushioda, 2011).
Moreover, the term refers to
those influences that are
consciously exerted to
achieve some systematic
and enduring positive ef-
fects and focus on how to
present new material, give
feedback, set up communi-
cative tasks, deal with
learners’ lethargy, learners’
autonomy, intrinsic interest,
model learners’ behavior
and communication with
and teachers. The teacher’s
use of proper motivational
techniques or strategies
which aim at enhancing
effective learning, promot-
ing attention during the
classes and creating oppor-
tunities for active participa-
tion of the learners, should
be seen as central to teach-
ing effectiveness (Dörnyei,
2000; McCombs & Pope,
1994; Deci and Ryan, 2008;
Ormrod, 2008, Nilson,
2016).
stimulate their learners to
discuss or debate issues,
offer opinions about cause-
and-effect relationships,
speculate about hypothet-
ical situations, or think crea-
tively about problems. Fur-
thermore, incorporation of
game-like features into ac-
tivities, which are less dis-
tracting than curriculum
objectives, could effectively
promote learner motivation
to learn, since emphasis is
put on speed in supplying
memorized facts rather than
integration or application of
knowledge. What is more,
learners should be given
the opportunity to create
Because human behavior is
rather complex (Dörnyei,
2001), there are many dif-
ferent strategies and ways
of promoting L2 learning.
For, as Good & Brophy
(1986) suggest, some ele-
ments that learners tend to
find intrinsically rewarding,
interesting and enjoyable in
class include, for example,
opportunities for Active Re-
sponse, as learners prefer
activities that allow them to
interact with the teacher.
Additionally, inclusion of
higher level objectives and
divergent questions is an-
other useful motivational
technique, as teachers can
finished projects, as they
prefer activities which have
meaning or integrity in their
own right, (task completion
etc). Learners must also
have the opportunity to in-
teract with peers, especially
when working in small
groups or pairs (debates,
discussion, role play). On
the other hand, the teacher
should create a class envi-
ronment that supports Pro-
ject-Based Learning, as
learners tend to pursue
solutions to authentic prob-
lems by asking and refining
questions, making predic-
tions, etc.
Enhancing effective EFL learning through motivational strategies

state that in order to make effi-
cient progress in their cognitive
learning in schools, learners
need to develop and use gen-
erative learning strategies. That
is, learners need to progress
information actively, connect it
to their existing knowledge, put
it in their own words, and so on.
Therefore, teachers motivate
learners to learn not only by
encouraging them to take an
interest in and see the value of
what they are learning, but also
by providing them with guid-
ance on how to go about it.
Good and Brophy (1986) pro-
pose a series of motivational
strategies for teachers who
intend to activate and excite
learners’ motivation to learn.
For example, teachers are
advised to minimize perfor-
mance anxiety by parlaying
personal interest and de-
tailed knowledge about the
topics into an effective
presentation. What is more,
teachers may induce appre-
ciation for a topic or task by
verbalizing reasons that the
learners should value it
(Newby, 1991). Teachers
could also encourage learn-
ers to speculate or make
predictions about what they
will be learning. Moreover,
teachers may promote per-
sonal identification with the
content by relating experi-
ences and displaying how
the content applies to the
lives of individuals. Teach-
ers can also show unex-
pected or paradoxical as-
pects of the content by stim-
ulating learners to solve the
“mystery” that underlines an
incongruity (induction of
cognitive dissonance
(Festinger, 1957)). Apart
from that, teachers should
induce learners to generate
their own motivation to
learn, by asking, for exam-
ple, them to declare and
explore their preferable top-
ics, or subtopics

they understand, encoding
or elaborating on the infor-
mation presented, organiz-
ing and structuring the con-
tent and maintaining the
appropriate affect
(metacognitive awareness).
On the other hand, it is
stressed that appropriate
and satisfying motivational
strategies/techniques may
be developed under the
certain conditions. Firstly, a
good
relationship between teach-
ers and learners should be
established. (Dörnyei, 2001;
Burden; 1995). What is
more, creating a pleasant,
cooperative and supporting
(Skinner et al, 1990). This
gives learners a sense of
responsibility and control of
their learning. In addition,
learners must be given
praise, an element that
helps them develop a sense
of competence, and
Informative feedback
(Gottffired, 1983; Cameron
&Pierce, 1996), which stim-
ulates them not only to rec-
ognize but also to appreci-
ate their developing exper-
tise (Brophy, 1999). Finally,
teachers should motivate
their learners to process the
information gained by ac-
tively concentrating their
attention, making sure that
classroom atmosphere and,
finally, developing cohesive
group norms, where stu-
dents assume responsibility
for their behavior and devel-
op their self-esteem, sup-
port productive work and
promote learner attention
and active participation.
20. A few years ago, I had an
interesting idea about vo-
cabulary learning while I
was listening to music. I
remember it was a sunny
summer afternoon and the
song “I Can't Get No Satis-
faction” by The Rolling
Stones was playing on the
radio. I was listening to the
song when suddenly an
interesting thought crossed
my mind. Ι realised that the
refrain of this song is actu-
ally an example for the
word “satisfaction” that can
stick in your mind and help
you learn and remember
the word more easily. It is
what I call a “musical exam-
ple”. And I thought maybe
we could find such exam-
ples from songs for more
words. Another sentence
example I immediately
thought of was the refrain “I
will always love you” from
the famous Whitney Hou-
ston song, which would
make a perfect musical
example for the word
“always”. And what if there
was a dictionary that of-
fered musical examples
from popular songs for all
lexical items? Since there
wasn’t any such foreign
language dictionary in the
world, I decided to start
creating it myself. I
launched MusicLexis
(www.musiclexis.com), my
website, in March 2015 with
the aim of offering students
of English a new entertain-
ing way to learn and consol-
idate new vocabulary. Musi-
cLexis was first intended for
English language learners
solely. As I was writing in
my blog entry on March 5,
2015,
musiclexis-com-my-new-
website-a-brand-new-
dictionary/).
It is true that music itself is
a blessing in our lives. Not
enough can be said about
the positive effects of music
on our psychology, our
mental health and our emo-
tional well-being. I personal-
ly feel grateful to the people
who have created the
songs I love. Music has
always played an important
part in learning a foreign
language too. Listening to
songs you like in a foreign
language has the power to
make you love the lan-

lary by listening to music we

ly motivate you to learn this
foreign language. When
you listen to your favourite
songs in a foreign language
you want to sing along, you
want to dance and you
have so much fun. At the
same time, you learn the
sounds of the language,
you learn the pronunciation
of words and by paying
attention to the lyrics you
pick up new words and
phrases.

Listening to songs in a for-
eign language can greatly
boost vocabulary learning.
It is this magical element of
music that my dictionary
aims to exploit. It precisely
aims to bring music into
vocabulary learning, to
make the process of learn-
ing vocabulary in a foreign
language more fun, more
interesting, more musical!
I chose the form of a wiki
for my dictionary because a
wiki can be edited by more
people and in this way other
teachers and also students
would be able to contribute
to the dictionary and help
create new entries. Moreo-
ver, new pages can be add-
ed to a wiki and they can be
infinite just like the lexical
items of a language. I first
published the wiki of the
English language and I
soon decided to create sim-
ilar wikis for more widely
spoken languages, French,
German, Spanish, Italian
and Portuguese, as well as
for the Greek language.
As in other online dictionar-
ies, each page in the Musi-
cLexis wikis corresponds to
a new dictionary entry. It is
dedicated, in other words,
to a specific lexical item.
The information that is in-
cluded in each page is,
however, what distin-
guishes MusicLexis from
common dictionaries. Musi-
cLexis is a multimodal dic-
tionary that combines visual
and auditory input. Its inno-
vative feature is that on
each page the learners can
find a sentence example of
the lexical item which
comes from the lyrics of a
famous song. The sentence
can be clicked on and it will
be instantly heard, as a new
window opens and the
YouTube video of the song
starts playing from the point
where the sentence begins.
At the end of the entry the
learners can also see the
video itself of the song, as it
is embedded from
YouTube. Translations of
the lexical item as well as
translations of the musical
example are also provided
in various languages.
MusicLexis draws its exam-
ples from the rich repository
of songs available in each
language. The popularity of
a song is the main criterion
for its use in the dictionary.
The sentence examples are
carefully selected so that
they both demonstrate how
a lexical item is used and
they can easily stick in the
students’ minds, facilitating
memorisation and learning
of the new vocabulary. That
is why the musical exam-
ples are usually taken from
the refrains of popular
songs, but they can also be
sentences contained in the
rest of the lyrics of a song.
As for the YouTube videos
which accompany each
musical example, these are
also carefully selected.
They are videos which dis-
play the lyrics of the song in
order to enable learners to
focus on the language they
are listening to.
In the English wiki the items
are grouped into three cate-
gories, Level A1-A2, Level
B1-B2 and Level C1-C2 of
the CEFR (Common Euro-
pean Framework of Refer-
ence for Languages). This
is a categorisation I decided
to introduce as the diction-
ary entries increased and it
would be useful for learners
to be able to find which
words to look up according
to their level of knowledge
of the English language.
This categorisation of the
English lexical items into
CEFR levels is based on
the English Vocabulary
Profile listings. (https://

22. As soon as I created the
first wikis of MusicLexis I
started adding new pages
myself, finding numerous
musical examples whenev-
er I listened to music, to all
kinds of songs in English,
Greek and other languages.
Creating new dictionary
entries soon became one of
my favourite hobbies. I then
showed my website to my
students and their response
was enthusiastic. They
were delighted to discover
that there is a new diction-
ary with musical examples
that they can use and they
brought me their own lists
of English words togeth-
er with musical examples
they found for them. I also
showed them how to edit
the website and they added
new pages themselves. I
introduced MusicLexis to a
lot of my colleagues, too,
who loved my idea and
contributed new entries to
the English wiki as well as
to the French, German and
Italian wikis. Moreover, I
presented MusicLexis in the
1st Panhellenic Conference
for the Promotion of Educa-
tional Innovation, on Octo-
ber 24th, 2015, in Larisa,
Greece, and it received
very positive feedback from
teachers of foreign lan-
guages. (https://

Then, in 2016 I took a new
step forward. I started an
online collaborative project
among schools from all
over Europe in order to help
foreign language students
around Europe get to know
the dictionary and have fun
learning vocabulary through
music.
cLexis website, they chose
their favourite entries in
each wiki and they learned
new words in English and in
other languages by listening
to the musical examples.
They also formed their own
choirs and videotaped
themselves singing musical
examples that they chose in
English, French, Greek and
Portuguese. What is more,
the students became little
lexicographers themselves.
With the guidance of their
teachers, they added new
entries to the English and
other wikis as well as count-
less translations of the mu-
The eTwinning project
“MusicLexis: The most fun
dictionary ever!” (https://

was a successful project
that lasted for three consec-
utive years and was award-
ed the eTwinning National
and European Quality Label
as well as received a spe-
cial commendation at the
"European Language Label"
awards ceremony at the
Ministry of Education in
Athens on May 10th 2018.
During the project students
in my school and in partner
schools explored the Musi-
sical examples in the Eng-
lish wiki into other Europe-
an languages. MusicLexis
was enriched, its wordlists
expanded and three more
new wikis were added for
the Polish, Romanian and
Turkish languages, where
the Polish, Romanian and
Turkish partners added the
first entries. The project
helped increase students'
interest in learning foreign
languages and at the same
time it enabled them to dis-
cover and appreciate the
music of other European
people. The students en-
joyed listening to songs

Before and they all learned
new words in various Euro-
pean languages in an enter-
taining way.
MusicLexis is continuously
evolving and it is an online
dictionary with rich potential
and a lot of room for im-
provement too. New wikis
for more foreign languages
can be created in the future.
New entries with musical
links can be added in each
wiki and translations of the
lexical items into various
languages can become
available too. New music is
being created all the time,
so new popular songs will
be used in MusicLexis in
the future to teach specific
vocabulary. The categorisa-
tion of entries according to
language level is a feature
that will be introduced to all
wikis, while more new fea-
tures can be included such
as the categorisation of
entries according to type of
music. The appearance of
the website itself needs to
improve so that the website
becomes more attractive
and user-friendly. A future
continuation of the eTwin-
ning project is also likely
and new creative student
activities based on Musi-
cLexis can be organised.
MusicLexis is dedicated to
all language learners
around Europe and the
world. It is a unique diction-
ary that offers musical ex-
amples from popular songs
for all its lexical items in
order to facilitate students’
consolidation and memori-
sation of new vocabulary.
In this way it aspires to
make not only English, but
more languages of the
world, even languages
which are less well-known,
more accessible and more
fun to learn through music.
I believe MusicLexis is here
to stay and it will continue
to expand as long as there
is music!

within your inner world can-
not help but manifest in
your outer world.”-
Unknown
Jo was an ordinary boy of
12, or so he thought until
one long- awaited trip made
him realize the truth about
who he truly was and
helped him see all that he
was fated to become.
Jo had just settled down in
his seat when the same
stewardess came and sat
down beside him.
“My name is Kayla, if you
were wondering!” she said
as she smiled at Jo.
It was funny because that
was what he had been
thinking just before she sat
down.
“I’m very charmed to make
your acquaintance, Miss.,”
he said in the nicest words
he could think of. He had
been taught by his mother
to behave in an appropriate
manner in the presence of
adults, but, in this case,
with such a beautiful one,
he couldn’t help but be su-
per polite. Kayla had long,
wavy hair, which shined like
a brand new copper penny.
“She’s so pretty!” he
thought while gazing into
her hypnotic deep blue
eyes.
“Thank you Jo.” She an-
swered as if she had heard
his thoughts.
Shocked, he continued to
stare at her, this time with
his mouth wide open.
“Don’t be surprised,” she
said in a sweet, soft voice.
“Just keep an open mind on
this adventure and you’ll do
just fine!” she continued to
say as she got up to leave.
It was the beginning of my
‘not so ordinary story’!
After a very difficult year, I
feel that it is time for me,
and maybe for all of us, to
start to see life differently
again! To feel delight in
simple, ordinary moments
in our lives and to make
them into opportunities; to
make them extraordinary.
This year, I resolve to be
more creative than I have
been lately and this starts
with introducing you to one
of my first writing ventures
‘Not an Ordinary Story’. I
hope the next time you look
up at the sky, you see
When I first started writing
this book, I had no idea
what I was doing. I just
knew I needed to write it. It
was only something I did
during my Christmas, East-
er and summer breaks,
when I had time to focus on
something other than work.
It took me ten years to com-
plete and another five to
turn it into the story I want-
ed to share. It was a gift I
gave myself. A ‘win’ I could
be proud of. A journey into
a new, unexplored world;
the world of my inner
thoughts, my imagination.
something that you have
never noticed before. I
hope that the next time you
go into a small, quaint café,
you will travel to another
epoch; a time when things
were simpler, but more
beautiful! I feel that this will
be the year we all decide to
live our own not so
‘ordinary’ story!
