to your vitality and crea-
tivity through constructive
sharing of experiences,
innovative practices,
teaching methods and
techniques.
Congratulations are owed
to the contributors and
editors of the 6th issue of
this e-bulletin, the result
of passionate and moti-
vated teachers eager to
raise the bar in their clas-
ses.
Keep up the hard work
and have nothing but suc-
cess and the best of luck
in all your future intents.
Living in an era of globali-
zation and constant evo-
lutions on a social, finan-
cial and technological
level, students need to
acquire special skills in
order to function effec-
tively at present and as
tomorrow’s citizens. They
need to be flexible, auto-
nomous, collaborative,
take on initiatives, be
open to lifelong learning,
be culture-sensitive and
think critically. They need
to be facilitated and guid-
ed while being educated
in open spaces of com-
munication, collaboration
and novelty where lan-
guages, cultures and the
arts flourish.
I feel honored to be given
some space within your
Open Spaces, a place
where the concerns, in-
terests and thirst for crea-
tivity of the State English
teachers of the prefecture
of Serres are imprinted in
challenging times.
Stirring imagination
through multiple perspec-
tives while implicating
language, literature and
the arts in a linguistically
and culturally diverse so-
ciety, can motivate stu-
dents in their quest of
knowledge and equip
them with the capacities
necessary for the social
arena. What is more, con-
stant exchange of ideas
as well as cooperation
can enrich teachers’ po-
tential for professional
and personal growth with
a very positive impact on
their everyday work.
Upon return to my
hometown, I am particu-

More synergies among
teachers, in our yearly
Good Practices meeting,
with contributions from
hard working colleagues
who displayed their inspi-
rational and original pro-
jects, implemented with
their students. This year
we had the special work
of imprisoned learners
featured by their English
teacher and ELME chair,
Eleftheria Panou, who
taught them citizenship in
a European dimension.
In terms of European
partnerships, two of these
presentations are exten-
sively described in our
pages. Anna Veliki is
guiding us in KA1 funding
through “Structured visits
to Schools and Educa-
tional Institutes and Train-
ing Seminars in Malaga”
and Suzana Drampa is
describing an Erasmus+
KA2 partnership "Mirror,
Mirror on the Wall", focus-
ing on the “The D-words:
Diversity, Dialogue, De-
mocracy”.
We really hope you enjoy
reading the 6th
Issue of
Open Spaces!
Dear friends and mem-
bers of our TEUM com-
munity,
It is this time of the year
again, when we edit and
publish our e-bulletin,
taking a trip down
memory lane, featuring
our Union’s activities,
planning our next steps.
This issue is all about
synergies!
It marks the term of office
of the new Board, elected
in January 2019, full of
dreams and aspirations,
most of which are, hope-
fully, being gradually real-
ized. In 2019, we put em-
phasis in culture, litera-
ture and poetry as a
means of enhancing
teachers and students’
motivation in language
learning.
Our collaboration with the
French Teachers’ Union
on account of the World
Poetry Day yielded fruit.
Many young students
displayed their creativity
by taking part in the Com-
petition running from
March until May, writing
poems in English and
French and being award-
ed with beautiful prizes.
With respect to fiction, the
English Teachers Union
took up a new partnership
with the Greek Language
educators (Σύνδεσμος
Φιλολόγων) and the Pub-
lic Central Library of
Serres, co-organising
“Literary
Nights” (Λογοτεχνικά
The first event
of the series was under-
taken by Ms Marianthi
Tsepeli, Board member,
and was dedicated to the
Victorian and Modern
Literature.
The English School of the
Aristotle University and
Professor Katerina Kitsi
and her team of students
honored us by visiting our
town and running the lit-
erary seminar “Exploring
Gender Roles in the EFL
classroom through
Shakespeare’s ‘the Win-
ter’s Tale’” to raise
awareness about for-
giveness and how it can
be approached through
Shakespeare’s eternal
works.
Two of our teacher mem-
bers, Marianthe Hassapis
and Xenia Papari have
contributed their work
about how to integrate
literature in the EFL
class. Ms Hassapis is
presenting her fairytale
project, with multisensory
activities for young learn-
ers, with creative writing
learning outcomes and
drama production. Ms
Papari discusses “Self-
knowledge, Self-
actualization and Moral
seriousness” via a senior
high school project on
Jane Austen’s Pride and

σχολείου (project-based
learning, community of
learning, CLIL, semi-
private),

16. United in Diversity!
This is the European Union
motto adopted by the pupils
of the multicultural 2nd Pri-
mary School of Serres and
put to action under the um-
brella of the Erasmus +
program "Mirror, Mirror on
the Wall" in collaboration
with 3 schools in Nicosia/
Cyprus, in Skopau of Halle/
Germany and in Oulu/
Finland. The 2nd Primary
School of Serres has a high
percentage of Roma stu-
dents (90%) and hosts a
group of refugee and immi-
grant students, too. Stu-
dents come from socially
and financially vulnerable
background, are frequently
diagnosed with learning
difficulties and behavioural
diversions and have a high
percentage of early age
school drop-out. Therefore,
the challenge of motivating
them into the learning pro-
cess and integrating them
into society through active
participation in actions of
the school and the local
community is a priority and
an objective by itself for
implementing European
programs.
The D-words: Diversity,
Dialogue, Democracy
Students have become
familiar with concepts such
as democracy, dialogue,
peace, rights and obliga-
tions, respect for diversity,
but above all turned a mir-
ror towards everything that
concerns them and defines
their personality. They dis-
covered their personal
needs and skills, their rights
and responsibilities as stu-
dents and active members
of society, they defined their
role in their family, school
and community and ulti-
mately Europe and their
attitude towards the envi-
ronment and the world they

signatures from the local

the role of supporters and

were achieved through various
actions, such as volunteering,
social programs in collabora-

creative writing, interviews of
significant persons like politi-

of the city, actions against
bullying, cultural days for the
exchange of customs and the
acceptance of diversity etc.
Creative Story Writing:
“From There to Here”
The students of the four
schools were challenged to
deal with an issue that con-
cerns them and proceed to
write a story in four parts
titled "From There to Here",
which they also illustrated,
translated into English and
recorded in Greek and Eng-
lish. Some of the issues
raised by the pupils were
bullying, acceptance of diver-
sity, children's rights, war
and peace, democracy, dia-
logue and many other tradi-
tional values. Experiencing
the proximity to the refugee
camp in Serres and the re-
ception and integration in
the school unit of eleven
refugee children this year,
the pupils of the 2nd Primary
School chose to promote the
refugee issue that concerns
the whole world and Greece
in particular .

and to coexist, through col-

achieved. The story de-
scribes the “adventures” of
two refugee kids from their
country during war until
they settle down in Serres

managed to be accepted
with the help of a magic

successful and loved by the
students that they decided
to dramatise and present it,
along with the Refugee
Integration Class students,
at the central theatre of the
town on the opening day of

students hugged on stage
while narrating their story

ence with tears!!
Ideas for change travel to
the European Parliament
On 24th May 2019, during
the final meeting in Germa-
ny, coordinating country,
the Greek mission of three
teachers and four pupils
delivered the memorandum
of the pupils of the 2nd Pri-
mary school in the hands of
a representative of the Eu-
ropean Parliament, Mr Sven
Shultz. Some of the stu-
dents’ ideas for the future of
Europe are: measures tak-
en for the prevention of
poverty and unemployment,
the protection of the envi-
ronment and wildlife under
a stricter framework of laws,
serious dialogue between
all countries to solve the
refugee issue, the protec-
tion of stray animals and
the prohibition of their ex-
ploitation for money, the

The cultural contribution of the

exhibition in Germany was
very successful and meaning-
ful. We built a sailing ship from
wood and cloth and an olive

Sustainability and the future
of Europe
On Wednesday 12th June 2019
the Greek students said fare-
well to the project and their
partners with an Erasmus event
at the 2nd Primary School. The
most important actions of the
program were presented to all
students and teachers of the
school and a set of ideas for
changes in our school and town
was delivered to the Director of
the school Mr. Savvas
Bermperidis, with the commit-
ment that students’ ideas for
changes will be handed to the
new mayor of Serres in the
beginning of the new school
year. Among other things,
children asked for a modern
and clean town "friendly" to
the environment, that uses
renewable energy sources
and encourages recycling,
with sport centres, safe cy-
cling paths and many play-
grounds for children. As far
as schools are concerned,
students need well equipped
schools, with beautiful, com-
fortable classrooms to make
learning process attractive.
Students dream of schools
which offer equal opportuni-
ties to all children of Europe,
children so different but
equal, included regardless
their diversity, active and
happy, the future citizens of
Europe!

στο συγκεκριμένο work-
workshop.

παραμύθι –“How to create a
storylines.

line.
THE MAGIC RIBBON -A
MAGICAL FAIRYTALE

22. Whether literature should
be incorporated into foreign
language teaching in
schools, is certainly open to
dispute as many are under
the impression that foreign
language teaching is noth-
ing less than teaching rules
and how to memorize them,
promoting receptive and
productive skills of the lan-
guage. Literature and liter-
acy have a lot more in com-
mon than etymology. Litera-
ture teaches about the com-
plex verb tenses, the com-
plex sentence structure, the
power of connotation and
denotation, the force of
irony, prejudice, hypocrisy,
ignorance, human striving
(personal or collective).
Yet, there is more. Lan-
guage learning is not based
on artificial process. Lan-
guage is multifaceted. Lan-
guage is a cultural resource
and speaking it, is a cultural
practice. Language, is en-
gagement. Engagement is
more than involvement or
participation – it requires
feelings and sense making
as well as activity (Harper
and Quaye, 2009a,5). Act-
ing without feeling engaged
is just involvement or even
compliance; feeling en-
gaged without acting is dis-
sociation. Language learn-
ing is a holistic approach, it
promotes interrelationship
of behavioral, emotional,
cognitive engagement. It is
literature, it is arts, it is cul-
ture.
Implementing literature in
our language courses we
offer a motivating environ-
ment to our students to be
stimulated, interested, will-
ing to engage, entertained.
It’s through literature that
we help students to develop
the behaviors and “habits of
mind” of Good Thinkers.
Literature offers a counter-
balance to reason and effi-
ciency. It helps us grasp the
ways in which diverse parts
guage, fostering creative
writing, bringing to the fore
enunciation, promoting in-
teraction and communica-
tion. Thus, the students
were introduced to literature
through the novel “Pride
and Prejudice” by Jane
Austen (unit 7 of the text-
book) and dwelled on hu-
man relationships and self
redefinition.
Plot of the novel
Pride and Prejudice
The title is charged with
challenging human nature
and it is this fact that has
form a comprehensive and
complex whole, and it con-
nects us with other ages
and cultures. Not least,
great literature grapples
with the ethical challenges
of the day.
As literature has provided
an essential ingredient of
my own moral journey and
has shaped the lens with
which I view the world, I
decided it would be useful
to integrate literature in my
school lessons whenever I
have the advantage of an
opportunity and invite my
students to explore, in es-
sence, a more dynamic
concept of English lan-
made the novel a canonical
book with a cult following.
“Mr Bennet is an English
gentleman who lives in
Hertfordshire with his over-
bearing wife and their five
daughters; beautiful Jane,
clever Elizabeth, bookish
Mary, immature Kitty and
wild Lydia. The family’s
future happiness and secu-
rity depend on the girls’
marriages since their
house, after Mr Bennet’s
death, will be inherited by a
distant cousin they have
never met before. They all
lead an ordinary life until
the arrival of a rich gentle-
man in their neighbourhood.
Self-knowledge, Self-actualization and Moral seriousness
“Literature adds
to reality,
it does not
simply describe
it . It enriches
the necessary
competencies
that daily life
requires and
provides; ….. it
irrigates the
desserts that our
lives have
already
become”.

23. Mr Bingley, who rents a large

in the air for one of the Bennet

dents to literature and its
significant role in shaping
our “being”- ( that was the
general idea first and fore-
most ) - as a “vehicle” to
deepen imaginativeness,
foster critical thinking, ele-
vate creative writing and
stimulate student engage-
ment. Furthermore, to call
students’ attention to the
importance of the dialogue
in the development of the
story and characterization
of the heroes, to develop
reading skills, to promote
vocabulary expansion.
Self-knowledge, Self-actualization and Moral seriousness
Page 23Issue 6 / January—June 2019
To get a spherical understand-
ing the students, before starting
working on the subtopics of the
chosen subject of study, visited
web pages to get acquainted
with the era the novel had
been written (Regency Eng-
land, class system, legislation).
“Pride and Prejudice” is a multi-
faceted novel but the focus of
our project was on self-
knowledge, self-actualization
and moral seriousness, virtues
which the main characters
reach after coming to grips with
themselves and having over-
come obstacles – (pride and
prejudice) - which hinder them
from being clear-sighted in their
notions and students had to
follow step by step the charac-
ters’ journey to self-realization,
to read between the lines and
reason out demeanor thus
inevitably be confronted with
their inner self. They tried to
give answers to fundamental
questions such as: “How signif-
icant are first impressions in
our lives and to what extent are
we influenced by them?; to
analyze characters’ conduct, to
deepen their understanding of
the dialogues of the novel and
characters’ beliefs as well as
where they originate from.
Methodology
The students conducted the
study in collaboration and inter-
action, working in groups of
three or four.
Pre-reading
Building background
knowledge
Students were given activities
so as to build their background
knowledge about the plot, char-
acters and themes of the novel.
Step 1
They were given statements (in
the pre-reading stage) (e.g.
1.First impressions are often
wrong - and eight more ) to
respond either positive or neg-
ative and free write about their
reactions
24. (on a goggle form so as to
interact with their class-
mates by sharing, exchang-
ing, “discussing” their atti-
tude) which (later on ) led to
an interesting class discus-
sion in which students
shared their beliefs and
expectations. After reading
the novel (excerpts) and
watching the film they were
asked to mark their post-
reading responses.
Step 2
Problem situations
They were given brief prob-
lem situations to help them
think about conflicts based
on class, family and charac-
ter as well as to understand
what moral seriousness
means {e.g. While attending
a school dance, you hear
one of the more popular
students mocking you and
your group of friends. How
do you act when you are
placed on a school commit-
tee with him}. (They were
really troubled and felt awk-
ward in both steps 1&2 and
expressed plenty of argu-
ments).
Step 3
The class watched the film
Pride and Prejudice (2005,
Directed by Joe Wright, -
Starring Keira Knightely and
Matthew Macfadyen). While
watching I prompted the
students to pay attention to
the film techniques which
are used to tell the story -
sound, music, lightning,
camera angles (cinematic
effects), to perceive any
tension related to the main
characters (conflict), to try
to understand how the char-
acters are characterized-
through dialogue, by the
way they speak, their
thoughts and feelings, the
way they act towards other
characters
(characterization), to spot
elements used to create
pictures in our mind
(imagery) and other side-
lights,
to explain the meaning and
the process of constructing
a map, the types of map,
and teach them how to opt
for the appropriate vocabu-
lary and phrases so as to
foster critical thinking and
be able to organize and
reshape their thinking by
charting it).
Group 4 and Group 5
The students created con-
cept and character maps on
paper and with the applica-
tion of drawing which
fleshed out with drawings,
photos and anything further
they thought would regurgi-
tate it to a remarkable art
painting.
for the students could see
that the methods used to
analyze a film are related to
those used to analyze liter-
ature.
Step 4
Students formed groups
and got started on tasks.
Group 1
They studied distinct lan-
guage aspects the author
uses (particular vocabulary,
diction, irony etc.) and pre-
sented their comments to
the class (ppt presentation)
Group 2 and Group 3
They created character and
concept maps on app. c-
map tools. (Prior to the con-
struction of the maps I had
The character map depicts
the relationship and interre-
lationship among the char-
acters and defines each
one of them by giving traits
of their personality (page
25). The concept map
(image 2) identifies pride
and prejudice established
by the characters in the
most important quotes of
the novel (page 25).
Group 6
They were engaged to creat
a Journal (using the app. of
penzu) recording Mr Dar-
cy’s thoughts following step
by step his self-
development and actualiza-
tion (page 25).

main characters of the novel.
A way out of talent for artsy
students.
Group 6
Those four students were
tasked with the most de-
manding work. They gath-
ered the points that oriented
towards the redefinition and
actualization of the charac-
ters, organized it into a co-
herent narrative text in Eng-
lish and presented it on a
video with greek subtitles.
(The translation had to be
done on three levels - literal,
grammatical and underlying
message). Their artworks
and video were exhibited and
presented respectively in
Asteria Municipal Theatre.
Outputs
Through reading Pride
and Prejudice students:
—studied the various fac-
ets of the trait of prejudice
and pride.
—studied etiquette of a
past era regarding court-
ship and marriage.
—compared and contrast-
ed characters to gain a
better understanding of
Jane Austen's portraits of
human nature and to con-
sider what characteristics
are important to being a
good person.
—demonstrated their un-
derstanding of the text on
four levels: factual, interpre-
tive, critical, and personal.
answered questions to
demonstrate their
knowledge and understand-
ing of the main events and
characters as they relate to
the author's theme develop-
ment.
—enriched their vocabular-
ies
The writing assignments
(e.g. concept maps, ppt,
word templates) were
geared to several purposes:
a. To have students demon-
strate their abilities to select
and organize knowledge
Page 25Issue 6 / January—June 2019
to convey information, or to
express their own personal
ideas. b. To check the
students' reading compre-
hension c. To make stu-
dents think about the ideas
presented by the novel d.
To encourage logical think-
ing e. To provide an oppor-
tunity to practice good
grammar and improve stu-
dents' use of the English
language. Students also
got acquainted with the
authors narrative tech-
niques - indirect comments,
dramatic interplay, nuances
of tone, revelatory dia-
logue.
