- The Participation Network has been supporting evidence-based policy making in relation to service user involvement in maternity services. On behalf of the Scottish Government’s Maternity Services Action Group, we reviewed how best to involve women in the delivery and planning of maternity services, gathering information from a review of policy, published literature and good practice and engagement with stakeholders. Stakeholder engagement included focus groups across Scotland, with representation from a range of equality and diversity groups, including homeless women and women with alcohol and drug dependency. Participants were asked to reflect on their experiences of being involved in maternity services, to identify ways to encourage participation and to reflect on the appropriateness of different mechanisms of engagement.The findings from the review were used to develop evidence and experience-based recommendations which were submitted to the Maternity Services Action Group and which informed the Government’s Framework for Maternity Services in Scotland. Both papers have been shared with Boards and are being used to inform policy and practice in the development of person-centred care.
