• Aboriginal Community Controlled sector services
provide extensive range of culturally appropriate
services
• These services have evolved to meet need.
• Mainstream services not owned and controlled
by Aboriginal people are often not appropriate
• Lack of other services available in rural and
remote communities

Key learnings: • Aboriginal Community Controlled sector services provide extensive range of culturally appropriate services • These services have evolved to meet need. • Mainstream services not owned and controlled by Aboriginal people are often not appropriate • Lack of other services available in rural and remote communities
  • 7. Service providers The absence of appropriate service providers has the following effects: • Inability to implement plan • No support • Missed employment opportunities
  • 10. Supporting access • Gather evidence • Ensure families are involved with planning • Build expertise • Highlighting the importance of respecting and valuing the role of culture and community

Editor's Notes

  1. Community Connectors Connecting people with a disability and their families with the NDIS can be challenging, particularly as the non-Indigenous construction of disability may not be well understood or accepted in communities. This is why we have our Community Connectors. Community Connectors have been employed to bridge the gap between the Scheme, the participants and their community. The NDIS funds Indigenous organisations to host and manage Indigenous employees as Community Connectors, who will: Be a community-based and trusted resource that helps build understanding about disability and the NDIS in communities; Play an active role in connecting local people with disability and their families with an LAC the NDIA or providers; Provide support for participants and extended family along each stage of the pathway; and Build community understanding of the role of other government and community services. Community Connectors also play a critical role in identifying people with a disability, and as trusted community members, in assisting them to trust the services and access the Scheme. They can assist NDIA staff to develop appropriate and realistic plans to achieve participant life goals. They are a key to ensuring communities understand the NDIS and that local participants connect with planners and LACs. Community Connectors complement the LAC role. In the Northern Territory where the Community Connector role was first introduced, they are local Aboriginal people chosen by their community. They speak local language and are highly trusted and influential people in their communities. It is not possible to “train” for these skills.
