2. NARRATIVE
A young and disoriented British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit
following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast in 1971. It follows the main
genres of action , drama and war and has the certificate of 15 because of the
strong language and mature themes.
3. DETAILS
As part of the course we decided to go and view a low budget film in a smaller
independent cinema that was screening it. This film is a low budget film made
in collaboration by Crab Apple Films, Protagonist Pictures, Warp Films (all
low budget film companies). The advantage of using multiple low budget film
companies is the shared risk of the success with the film.
The film was made in the UK and used filming locations such as Blackburn,
Lancashire and parts of Liverpool. The running time is just under 100 minutes
and the picture is in colour with the sound mix from Dolby Digital.
4. BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW
“Jack O'Connell stars as Gary Hook, a young squaddie fresh out of training school,
whose unit is dispatched to help with peacekeeping in the Northern Irish capital
amid the rising tensions of that fatefully violent year. These unprepared rookies
have barely taken to the streets before rioting breaks out, and Gary finds himself
cut adrift from his companions and being chased relentlessly by an armed gang of
provisional militia. As night closes in, he has no idea how to get back to his
barracks, and must throw himself on the mercy of loyalist allies who prove neither
consistent beacons of help nor guarantees of sanctuary.”

'71 received positive notices from critics at its premiere at the 64th Berlin Film
Festival. On Rotten Tomatoes, based on 23 reviews, the film holds an 96%
'fresh' rating, with an average score of 7/10. On Metacritic, which assigns a
weighted average rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film
currently holds an average score of 85, based on 5 reviews, indicating
'Universal Acclaim.
