Masonry and the movies craft 2007

Editor's Notes

  1. [A very early version of a "magic lantern" was invented in the 17th century by Athanasius Kircher in Rome. It was a device with a lens that projected images from transparencies onto a screen, with a simple light source (such as a candle).] 1824 - the invention of the Thaumatrope (the earliest version of an optical illusion toy that exploited the concept of " persistence of vision " first presented by Peter Mark Roget in a scholarly article) by an English doctor named Dr. John Ayrton Paris 1831 - the discovery of the law of electromagnetic induction by English scientist Michael Faraday, a principle used in generating electricity and powering motors and other machines (including film equipment) 1831The Fantascope a device that simulated motion. 1834 A strobe device using a rotating drum 1839 the birth of still photography with the development of the first commercially-viable method of capturing still images 1869 Celluloid the basic of film 1870 Phasmotrope showed a rapid succession of still or posed photographs, giving the illusion of motion 1877 the invention of the Praxinoscope a 'projector' device with a mirrored drum that created the illusion of movement with picture strips, a refined version of the Zoetrope with mirrors at the center of the drum instead of slots; public demonstrations of the Praxinoscope were made by the early 1890s with screenings of 15 minute 'movies' at the Parisian Theatre Optique 1879 Edisons efficient incandescent light bulb, later used for film projectors
  2. Lumiere Bros used 35mm film and it was a lightweight portable hand-cranked camera at 16 frames/sec.
  3. Young Bobby Bumps plays a trick on his friend who wants to be initiated into his lodge. When his friend outsmarts him and saves his life, they both agree to be initiated into the lodge together . Reference is made to a lodge apron, riding the goat and the third degree. Bray Productions, Inc. Paramount Pictures. Directed by Earl Hurd
  4. Oliver Hardy was a very active FM and a member of Solomon Lodge No20 in Florida. Stan Laurel, however, was not a FM
  5. The Phantom played by Richard Roxburgh, wears a square and compasses ring on his right index finger. [00:03:41-00:03:49] Moriarty, also called "M"—and later revealed to also be the Phantom—has a square and compasses emblazoned on the door and wall panels of his meeting room, but wears no ring on his right hand.
  6. Benjamin Franklin Gates, played by Nicholas Cage, descends from a family of treasure-seekers who've all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the American founding fathers. This movie is yet another fictional attempt to link the freemasons, the Knights Templar and the founding of the USA.
  7. It makes great play of the fact that the two principal characters Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan played by Sean Connery and Michael Caine are Freemasons and uses this to enlist the help of the author played by Christopher Plummer to further their adventures in India. It is interesting as being the first film most masons associate with movies concerning Freemasonry. It also shows Freemasonry in quite a benign light albeit the two characters use their Masonic connections to obtain information to be used for nefarious purposes. Nevertheless it shows masonry as a society of friends who help each other rather than having some mysterious and satanic purpose. Described on one movie website as “A Masonic whistleblowing movie”. Quote left on the IMDb website for the film: “ I love this movie. This was my first exposure to Freemasonry back in 1996, and because of it I pursued membership. I've never regretted my decision. Masonry has been a very positive experience for me. The brothers are so generous and sincere in their desire to assist the community. The time they commit out of their personal lives to the various charities and events is astounding.” The book on which the movie is based has a very descriptive passage involving masonry: "The most amazing miracles was at Lodge next night. One of the old priests was watching us continuous, and I felt uneasy, for I knew we'd have to fudge the Ritual, and I didn't know what the men knew. The old priest was a stranger come in from beyond the village of Bashkai. The minute Dravot puts on the Master's apron that the girls had made for him, the priest fetches a whoop and a howl, and tries to overturn the stone that Dravot was sitting on. 'It's all up now,' I says. 'That comes of meddling with the Craft without warrant!' Dravot never winked an eye, not when ten priests took and tilted over the Grand Master's chair--which was to say, the stone of Imbra. The priest begins rubbing the bottom end of it to clear away the black dirt, and presently he shows all the other priests the Master's Mark, same as was on Dravot's apron, cut into the stone. Not even the priests of the temple of Imbra knew it was there. The old chap falls flat on his face at Dravot's feet and kisses 'em. 'Luck again,' says Dravot, across the Lodge, to me; 'they say it's the missing Mark that no one could understand the why of. We're more than safe now.' Then he bangs the butt of his gun for a gavel and says, 'By virtue of the authority vested in me by my own right hand and the help of Peachey, I declare myself Grand Master of all Freemasonry in Kafiristan in this the Mother Lodge o' the country, and King of Kafiristan equally with Peachey!' At that he puts on his crown and I puts on mine,--I was doing Senior Warden,--and we opens the Lodge in most ample form. It was an amazing miracle! The priests moved in Lodge through the first two degrees almost without telling, as if the memory was coming back to them. After that Peachey and Dravot raised such as was worthy--high priests and Chiefs of far- off villages. Billy Fish was the first, and I can tell you we scared the soul out of him. It was not in any way according to Ritual, but it served our turn. We didn't raise more than ten of the biggest men, because we didn't want to make the Degree common. And they was clamouring to be raised.
  8. Michael Beaumont was concerned that the very specific Masonic content of the Kipling book on which the film would be based would only be properly understood by a FM and wondered if GL should to be involved in some way either directly or by providing an expert who could help.
  9. From Hell (2001) This film implicates Freemasonry as being responsible for the 1888 "Ripper murders" in Whitechapel, London. Based on a graphic novel written by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, the many masonic images and references place this highly fictionalized account in the catagory of intentional anti-masonry. However, the worrying aspect of this film is that it is meticulously researched and contains an accuracy to the ‘known’ facts about the Ripper case so its masonic connections may be seen in the same light. Jubela: The 3 men Jubelo, Jubelah, and Jubelon are caught, and executed, the temple is not completed (in its original design as the plans were lost with Hiram Abiff's death) for hundreds of years. Quote from the website discussing the movie: “Now it also turns out, those 3 men were in fact, acting on BEHALF of King Solomon, to steal a much greater secret from Abiff, the 3rd word needed in a Ritual that was to open the Temple, the key to the Dark Arts, and Solomon wanted it for himself. So when the men failed to retrieve the password, he had them killed immediately to cover the fact. Every Master Mason knows the story of Hiram Abiff and the three ruffians, and they all know the substitute word that was given at Abiff’s funeral. Almost all of them are looking for this Word, but very few have any idea of the reason behind it. Freemasonry was originated by Darkness. Christianity was hijacked by Darkness. Since Darkness thoroughly corrupted Christianity, it is virtually impossible to discern the difference between Freemasonry and Christianity”
