Warner Brothers is one of the largest Hollywood studios, owning a film industry oligopoly as a subsidiary of AT&T. Their blockbuster films like Wonder Woman have budgets over $300 million and profits over $700 million, allowing risks on less profitable films. In contrast, independent UK studio Belstone Pictures has much smaller $150,000 budgets, using cheaper actors, equipment, and locations. While Wonder Woman was extensively marketed and distributed worldwide, Tank 432 focused on film festivals and social media with more limited distribution and revenue. The structures of the Hollywood system put independent studios at a disadvantage in terms of budgets, marketing, and competing with major studio tentpole films.
In the course Entertainment and Marketing Promotion, each student was assigned to a student film to create a marketing plan for. This project taught me how to create a marketing plan for a film both as a major Hollywood film and a student film.

This dissertation examines the relationship between budget variances and operating
margins for hospitals. The author analyzes hospital budget data to determine if smaller
unfavorable variances and larger favorable variances are associated with higher operating
margins. Multiple linear regression models are used to assess the impact of revenue,
expense, volume, and combined budget variances on profitability, as measured by
operating margin. The results of this study can help hospitals understand how to improve
financial performance through more accurate budget forecasting and tighter budget
management.

Script Development and Equity
Investment programs. It features acclaimed actor Shawn Doyle (Big Love/
HBO) alongside rising star Tatiana Maslany (“Heartland”, Eastern Promises),
who also took home a special jury prize for breakout performance in World
Cinema. Set in Newfoundland, the film tells the story of a precocious teenage
girl who is left by a mother pursuing dreams of stardom, to care for her
hopelessly “unsophisticated” father.

Amaze Film & Television’s Finn on the Fly took
home first prize for Best Independent Feature,
Ages 8-12 at the latest KID’S FIRST! Film
Festival. The project, which received funding
from The Harold Greenberg Fund’s Family Film
Program at both the Script Development and
Equity Investment stage, is a fun, family-friendly
tale about a frisbee-playing dog and his young
owner.
Writer David Shamoon’s
Holocaust drama Hidden is
now shooting on location at
the Babelsberg studios in chilly,
snow-covered Berlin. Produced
by Film Works Ltd. along with
international co-producers from
Germany and Poland, the film
is being directed by Agnieszka
Holland of Europa Europa fame.
Hidden chronicles the story of
a Polish thief who reluctantly
agrees to hide a group of Jews in the sewers of Nazi-occupied Lvov for money,
then becomes committed to their survival. It was supported by The Harold
Greenberg Fund’s Script Development and Equity Investment Programs.

2. Last December, two BC writers and I had the
privilege of ruminating over different pitches and
marketing ideas for our feature film projects at the
CFC Writers Workshop during the 2009 Whistler
Film Festival. The name of the workshop is rather
deceptive since it was not about writing itself
but about providing writers with valuable market
intelligence on their projects. The workshop is
designed to help writers gain insight into aspects
of the business that could strengthen their script
and successfully attract support in the international
marketplace. As a writer, marketing is such a
challenging concept for me, requiring a completely
different skill set separate from creative writing. I
was up for the challenge.
The other writers involved were Katherine Collins,
who was pitching her near future thriller, Zed and
Trevor Markwart, who was there with his comedic
script, Saucer Kings. I was pitching my dramatic
feature, Portraits of You and Me, which has received
support from the Harold Greenberg Fund’s Script
Development Program.
Held in a roundtable setting, the one-day workshop
was an intense, eight-hour session which required
us to pitch EIGHT times to industry professionals
who analyzed our projects and pitches, and provided
feedback from a marketplace perspective. The high-
powered industry professionals in attendance were
Peter Wetherell, President of Magnus Entertainment,
Ben Kramer, Finance and Packaging at CAA, Scott
Shooman, VP of Production and Acquisitions at
Sony Pictures, Tony Safford, EVP of Acquisitions
at Fox Searchlight, John Galway at the Harold
Greenberg Fund, Ellen Pittleman, President of Hybrid
Entertainment, and Tim Brown, CEO of Joker Films.
The knowledge I gained and the connections I
made were invaluable. I think every writer would
benefit from hearing comments on the side of agents,
buyers and packagers. Understanding the way they
think is important in figuring out how to tailor pitch
your project to garner excitement and interest. I
left the session drained but exhilarated and hopeful.
I feel extremely grateful to all the sponsors and
participants for giving us this opportunity.

Astral Media The Harold Greenberg Fund is pleased
to announce its latest round of funding for 27 new
and ongoing projects through its Script Development
Program and Equity Investment Program.
Chosen from a record 139 applications sent in for
the September 30 deadline (nearly twice the average
amount), the most recent selection of supported
projects includes a dynamic combination of new
stories from old hands and old favourites from new
voices.
“New voices are always exciting and, of course,
essential to the growth of our industry, but it’s great
that we’re also seeing scripts from filmmakers whose
success we have shared in the past,” said John
Galway, President, English-Language Program, Astral
Media The Harold Greenberg Fund. “The fact that
we have an established core of capable creative
professionals who are continuing to produce work
lets us know that we’re succeeding in our efforts to
support local talent, and make screenwriting a viable
career option in Canada.”
This latest collection of supported scripts includes
new projects from recognized industry veterans Sarah
Polley (Away From Her) and Michael McGowan (One
Week), while Michael Dowse (Fubar) gives us a small-
town Newfoundland take on the 2003 Quebec hit La
Grande séduction.
