ShortFilm Locations:
The short film ‘Jade’ will continually cross-cut between Hawthorn High and the Woodland
area, showing the juxtaposition between buildings and nature. Hawthorn High is the name of
Jade, Olly and Cara’s High School, and is where much of the narrative takes place.
Hawthorn High – Head Teacher’s Office:
The head teacher’s office will be extremely professional and the Head Teacher will sit behind
his desk when talking to students. Whilst a bright, homely atmosphere is created through the
use of this decoration; dark, dull lighting will be used during scene 5 to suggest to the
audience that the narrative of the film is taking a dark twist and will no longer feature much
happiness. The use of a lack of lighting also creates a sense of negative change for the
audience; hinting at loss or bereavement before this has been announced by the head
teacher himself.
Hawthorn High – Study Room:
The study room has a few tables and study booths for silent working. Jade will sit at an
empty table for scene 3; whereby she writes a letter to her mum. The room will also feature
general features of a study room including books and noticeboards. Bright, natural lighting
will be used to light the room; connoting a bright future for Jade when she tells her mum the
truth about her sexuality.
Hawthorn High – Carol’s Classroom:
Carol’s classroom will follow the conventions of a stereotypical school classroom and will
include a white board, desks, display boards and the teacher’s desk. The room will use very
little lighting to connote the loss of Carol at the end of the film.
Woodland Area:
The woodland area will feature throughout much of the film as a way of representing nature,
tranquillity and peacefulness. Bright, natural lighting will be used throughout all scenes in the
woodland despite the sad and upsetting themes of the film; thus
creating a sense of escapism in the woodland. Due to filming in
the autumn, the trees leaves may have turned orange and may
begin to fall from the trees. This also connotes a sense of change
from summer and winter, linking to the binary-opposites theory. A
bench will often feature in the woodland scene for character to sit
on; otherwise the location is completely naturalistic.
