Ancillary Task: Film Review Analysis - Candy Floss
1. Kieran Morris
Rhetorical Question and Response: This is
used at the beginning of the review in order to
instantly intrigue the audience and grab their
attention by making them think. The response
to the question ‘Well, a lot of things really’
implies that romance is not a common theme
in this short film; making the audience
question the films genre and therefore find out
more about the film.
Candy Floss: Analysis
Credits: All film reviews usually state who directed
the film, who stars in the film and who wrote the film
review. The audience may use this information to
make a decision on whether they would watch the
film or read the online article; particularly if they are
interested in a particular actor or director. The
website also suggests that ‘Chris Olson’ writes many
of the articles; therefore film fans may read the article
due to trustworthy and reliable articles previously
being released by Olson. Credits are then repeated
throughout the film to showcase to the audience the
new actors as talented individuals; helping them kick-
start a career in the film industry.
Introduction: This provides a brief description of the
narrative whilst also describes the films narrative
using the adjectives ‘tragic’ and ‘effecting’. These
adjectives imply that the film is going to be of an
upsetting nature and therefore suggests that the film
is a drama. The opening paragraph instantly creates
a feeling of empathy and encourages readers to read
the article further in order to find out more information
about the film.
Second Paragraph: The second paragraph gives the
audience further detail about the films narrative and
introduces them to some of the key characters,
including Shane and Jasmine. By introducing these
characters, the audience is more likely to engage with
the film’s narrative and therefore are more likely to
watch the short film. Whilst the article attempts to
keep a formal register; some slang is used such as
‘lad’ and ‘conning’. These colloquialisms relate to the
social class of the characters, which is suggested as
being working-class through the events of the film (i.e.
‘drinking and smoking’) being stereotypically linked to
lower social classes. The mixture of slang (i.e. middle
finger) and Standard English (i.e. emboldened)
provides a realistic representation of working class
people who would use a variety of language. An
extended metaphor is also used to represent the
changing events of the short film ‘Jasmine appears to
be running away from some kind of angst in her past
and in Shane she finds a new path to walk.’ By using
this extended metaphor, the audience are more likely
to feel sympathy for Jasmine and will support Jasmine
and Shane’s relationship. Therefore, they are more
likely to watch the short film.
Graphology and Imagery: The film review
also features a film poster for Candy Floss,
which uses a black and pink colour scheme.
The use of black suggests that the film has a
dark and twisted narrative, whilst the use of
dark pink connotes affection and inner peace;
implying to the audience that some romantic
themes may occur, although the film will follow
the conventions of drama. The use of the dark
faces and the pink and grey artistic design
suggests that the film follows an urban theme
and is therefore a social-realist film. This is
accentuated by the use of the font for ‘Candy
Floss’ which creates an eerie yet urban tone to
the film poster; suggesting the film will provide
a realistic representation of urban life.
Directors Intentions: The 3rd
and last
paragraphs provide information about the
directors intentions for the short film - ‘It is a
powerhouse film, loaded with compelling
realism…’ The use of quotes like these by
Olson suggests that Hart intends on making a
short film that portrays real life; something
which the audience can relate to.
