Hip Hop Magazine Contents and Double Page Analysis
1. Further Contents And Double
Page Analysis
From my knowledge not being fully equipped on a contents
and double page spread analysis, I have chosen to analyse
one more cover on both pages to gain more depth on codes
and conventions used on them specific pages. Here I will
evaluate the conventions of one more contents page and a
double page spread.
2. From my knowledge not being fully equipped on a contents and
double page spread analysis, I have chosen to analyse one more cover
on both pages to gain more depth on codes and conventions used on
them specific pages. Here I will evaluate the conventions of one more
contents page and a double page spread.
4. •The camera shot is a long shot as it is showing
her full body but is taken in a abnormal way
where the subject is lying on the floor with her
legs up looking directly into the camera which
would be taken as a low angle. This can help to
add more sex appeal and become more
attractive.
5. The Mise En Scene on this contents page is
set in a studio with a black and white
contrasting background. The background is
effective as it makes the main image
standout more to allow better visibility
which would appeal to mostly a male
audience as the clothing and
anchor/model used it more of a sex
appeal. The use of a simple background is
combined with the use of lighting to help
gain more emphasis on the actual image.
The colours used can be neutral but the
whole image itself would be aimed at men
as its more of a sex appeal. The way her
legs and heels make a V shape is well
complimented with the logo as it also
makes a V which does add more effect. The
clothing is stylish with heals, accessories
and a huge belt. This could show some sort
of fashion in the model.
6. The target audience of this page would appeal
to a young male audience mostly due to the
nudity on the main image. The model on the
front cover would inspired by more females as
she would outline a young female in today’s
society but can be admired by a male due to
her sexual characteristics and posture. This
would contemporary suit to youngsters.
7. • The typeface and fonts are different from
each other. The masthead is white filled with
block capitals and is presented in an unusual
way as the words ‘CONTENTS’ is broken up into
three sections. This stands out from the rest of
the page as it’s more dominant and in a
different colour from other text to engage the
audience more. The other text
(features/fashion) is in a different font and the
colour black. These are sub-heading to the
pages under it to guide the reader better.
Some of the text is put in bold to stand out
more which could be significant pages in the
magazine. The house style is consistent as
there are page numbers, date and the name of
the magazine on the bottom right of the page.
8. • The main colours on this cover are black and
white. As black and white are simplistic,
original and contrast well together to make
text and the image to visually stand out better.
The background is a fading white into a dark
black from bottom to the top. This helps gain
more attention on the image and contents.
•The enigma and ambiguity is posing in a
unique way to other Hip Hop contents pages as
it can show mixed emotion such as laying their
waiting or just naturally posing in a
calm, relaxed but unusual way.
9. The girl is representing a Hip Hop magazine
through her clothing and facial expression. Hip
Hop magazine usually have a woman showing
her figure with less clothing than usual. Here
her legs are shown and a bit of her backside.
This will appeal to most males reading the
page. Also, her facial expression looks as if she
isn’t concerned and just more relaxed in her
music career.
10. • The connotation of the page is the woman
implying loneliness or relaxing comfortably.
The props are minimal where it is just the
figure of the woman that is standing out more.
She doesn’t look at all worried but more
confident in a calm way which draws more
attention to the audience as they would
question the image. To add more depth onto
the last sentence, she can be confident as she
has gained more success in life and is not
bothered about her legs being up and available
whereas she looks unbothered about this. This
can be due to her looking stunning and sexy as
her own costume is revealing, her makeup and
jewellery are striking which can contrast her
being simple.
11. The denotation of this contents page is the
woman lying down with her legs up. This can
mean that she is either waiting for someone or
just tedious. There can be several meaning but
from her facial expression she doesn’t have too
much emotion as she is looking directly to the
camera.
12. The layout of the page is mostly used with The
Rule Of Thirds. The masthead sits on the first
horizontal line to directly engage the audience
more. The image itself lies in the two vertical
lines and the second horizontal line which
takes up more of the page to increase the
audience awareness. The audience eyes would
automatically be drawn to the left side of the
page where her legs are along with the logo.
The page itself is organised as all page
numbers are with each title allowing quicker
navigation for the audience.
14. • The image is taken in a studio at a
long shot to show the full body of the
person. This is to show his body
language more than his facial
expression. This is more effective as it
will show the artist being on eye level
to the audience and to be more
natural.
• The representation of the image is a
relaxed average-looking Hip Hop artist
showing attitude with his body
language and facial expressions.
• The enigma and ambiguity is a more
‘untouched’ pose. The facial expression and
body language of the artist is to show more
attitudes and a rebellious look where the artist
does not look bothered at all as he could be
very successful in life.
15. • The denotation of this image is a
young male dressed in jeans and a
white t-shirt which doesn’t show the
target audience his wealth but an
average American citizen.
• The connotations of this image is
the male teasing the audience as he
isn’t showing a lot of wealth with his
dress sense but more with his body
language and facial expressions. This
shows that not all artists have to
wear all fancy clothes or show a lot
of jewellery to show how rich and
successful they are. This could show
the model being confident with him
and has self-belief in himself from
looking like an average male. There
are minimal props in the image to
make the audience be more engaged
onto the model.
16. • The colour scheme is mostly the same
on any Hip Hop magazine and it can be
iconic to all magazines due to the
colours white, black and red. As the
second page background has a little
shade of black which is outlining the
model to make him clearer and to
stand out more. The text is broken up
into colours. The red text is
questions/quotes and the black is GZA’s
answers. This is good to prevent
confusion to the reader and to
understand the article better.
• The layout is very simplistic as one page has a
picture and the other is information related to
the picture. This is easy for the reader as they
know who the person is and what the
information is saying about him. The text is laid
out in a conventional way where it is organised
in columns to look more appealing.
17. • The target audience of this article will
be to people interested in Hip Hop or
people who are inspired by a Hip Hop
group called ‘WU TANG CLAN’. This
would mostly appeal to the male target
audience as it is more to do with Hip Hop
and has no feminism on the page. All of
these conventions where it is
uncomplicated and simplistic is to appeal
to their target audience.
• The house style has the name of the
magazine at the bottom and the page
number and website on the left.
However, it is not fully consistent as
the page number on the second page
is missing. This could be inaccurate use
of house style and could be a
improvement to Hip Hop Connection.
18. • The typefaces and font is clear, big
and bold. The heading ‘Pure Genius’
and other sub-heading relates to the
artist ‘GZA’ on the second page that he
wouldn’t have been as famous without
his Hip Hop group WU TANG CLAN. A
personal quote that stands out is 'Still
has creativity to burn' which implies
that he still has self-esteem to take
himself and his group further into the
music industry. The language used in
this double page is written in a rappers
style of tone with some slang and
unique metaphors. The text is written
in a way where the artist is mainly
speaking for himself and to show the
young target audience how to act and
behave in society.
19. This contents page and double page spread analysis has
developed my knowledge as I was uncertain in some specific
areas to create these two pages. I have developed my
knowledge further in depth and can now proceed to the next
task to start producing my Hip Hop magazine. This will allow me
to have the best outcome and appeal more to my target
audience.
