The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Question 7
1. Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full product?
What skills have a learnt from the beginning of the course compared to now?
I personally believe that there are a handful of elements that I have learnt during this
process. They range from having a better understanding of the film industry itself to
knowing better ways of creating a good quality successful media film opening.
Pre-production-
Personally when looking back to my preliminary task pre-production to my actually
full film opening product pre-production it is no close substitute. Mainly the fact that
I actually spent a lot of time on my full product preparation helped massively when it
came to the production process because this allowed me to be able to be organised
and know what I wanted to do and when thanks to my well organised Production
schedule.
This is the difference between my storyboard from my preliminary task compared to
my storyboard from my full product. As you can see by looking at them I have
obviously spent a lot longer on my full product storyboard. I have added a lot more
detail to my full product one this was very beneficial to me because when it came to
me actually filming my product I had a better insight of exactly what I wanted to
portray because I had a better organised plan. This helped me hugely in the long run
because it was a lot less time consuming trying to sort out what I wanted to film
because I was more organised.
However it wasn’t only the storyboard that I spent more time on and finished to a
better quality. This was the case for all of my pre-production including my
- Script
- Shot list
- Recce photos
- Production schedule
I think this was a very wise move because where I had more time to spend time on
each one this meant that when it came to me actually filming my media piece I had a
better organised structure making the production process a whole lot easier.
2. Preliminary Storyboard Full Product Storyboard
Production-
Not only did I improve massively for pre-production work I also made sure that when
I done my production work I spent a lot more time on it to make sure that it gets
finished to a better standard. I believe that the main reason why the production
process of my preliminary was rubbish was because I didn’t really take it very
seriously and didn’t spend time making it better and improving it. However this is
where when I came to the full product I changed my ways. The reason I took more
time on my full product and used a variety of techniques to make it better was
because I wanted my film opening to be good.
Firstly with the equipment I used-
In my prelim I used a canon 1000D whereas in my full product I used a Canon 600D,
the reason I done this was because I wanted to create clips in my film that looked
more clear and high definition. The reason I went through the hassle to do this was
because mainly in the long run I knew this would have been beneficial making my
full product a lot more improved. This initially made my footage look more
professional and when it came to editing it was easier to work with better quality
footage unlike having footage that was bad quality because it made my work harder
to put together.
3. Not only did I use a better camera I also used for my full product a tripod and a mic.
During my preliminary production I didn’t take it very seriously and didn’t organise it
anywhere near as good as I could of. For example I didn’t take a tripod or mic so
these therefore lead to me not having clear footage and having crackly unclear
audio.
However when I spotted this issue when it came to the editing process I then realised
that next time when I do film I was going to make sure I used a better camera and
use a tripod and mic. So this is what I did when it came to my full product.
I am so happy that I took this mistake into consideration because I personally think
that when working with these 2 extra pieces of equipment when I was filming was
very beneficial. I used the tripod for the majority of my clips this was very good move
because this therefore meant that my footage wasn’t shaky or disrupted. Not only
this but when I used tools like Panorama shots and tracks the footage was a lot
smoother with made my full finished product better.
I also used a Rode Videomic also when filming my actual product. This also was very
beneficial because this therefore allowed my footage audio to be crisp. I think why
this was such a crucial thing to have done was because where dialogue played a
significant part in my media having it clear and good quality helped a lot.
Filming techniques-
Not only was my full product better than my prelim because of the upgrade of
equipment. It was also because I actually added techniques into my full product to fit
the conventions of my genre in. For example lighting. During the prelim process
when I was filming I didn’t even think twice about the lighting I just used the lighting
I was left with. Whereas with my full product I spent more time on organising and
planning what lighting I was going to use to set the right atmospheres and moods of
my genre. Where my genre of film was crime and gangster I had a look at
conventions that stereotypically fitted this genre. So one convention that came up a
lot was the use of Low key Lighting. This is initially used within these films because of
the fact it give of this suspicious dangerous mood. This meant that I wanted to use
this in my piece to connote the audience that my film fits the conventions of my
genre. I believe personally that this show I have improved from the prelim too my full
product. I think this because I have shown a clear improvement when looking at both
products. I believe this is because I have taken specific filming techniques into
4. consideration to help fit my conventions. Not only this but I thinks is because I have
spent more time on it making sure I was a lot more organised. Overall I think this
extra time spent has made me improve massively and suggest my full product is a lot
better than my prelim task.
Preliminary task Lighting. Full Product Lighting.
Editing-
I also believe that during the editing process I improved too from my prelim. The
main things I learnt were the following. On premiere pro them main editing software
I used I learnt the following techniques-
- Colour correction was a technique that I learnt. This is initially a tool that
allows you to adjust the colours within the clip. For example if you were
making a horror movie you would add greener colousr to you footage to give
it the creepy atmosphere. Whereas in this case I added more green in the
interrogation to make it more realistic and to fit my conventions. This helped
as it made my work look better quality.
- Another place where I used this technique was on my security camera effect
footage. What I don’t for this effect was after looking at real life security
footage I realised they all had this green tint to them with the date and time
at the top. So once I had this knowledge I then gave it a go myself, with my
knowledge of using titles and colour correction I found this quite simple. Here
it is:
5. I think this shows that I have a clear understanding of how to edit better from when I
started. Also I think this skill allowed my film to come out a better quality because
this CCTV effect fits the conventions of my genre also allowing the audience to know
what they are watching.
- Another skill that I found along the way was how to use Adobe after Effect this
is Adobe editing software. I used this because this allows you to create better
effects. I used it to make my titles, because where on premiere pro they offer
you standard titles I wasn’t impressed with them this is why I used after effect
to make an animated stroke title. This was because I wanted a more exciting
title. I think this shows that I have also improved significantly during the
editing process witch in the long run has benefited me because compared to
both my products my prelim is no match to my full product.
Preliminary Task Title Full Product Title
I think that the editing period of this process helped massively and shows my clear
improvement from the beginning of this course till now.
Overall I think that with both Pre-production and production I have improved
massively from my prelim till now. I think this is because I have used my time wisely
to learn techniques that I knew would benefit my full product. After look at my
prelim and comparing it to my full product you can see a difference in my ability. I
am very happy with myself due to the fact I have used my time and have been
organised through the process making my full product come out at a better standard
than before. However there are some skills that I would like to develop in the future
that I think will help me hugely when it comes to me having to do this kind of task
again. However there is only one main one that will offer more skills-
6. - The main thing I would like to learn how to use after effects at a better
standard. Because I think this will give me a better understanding of how to
use a higher more complex standard of editing making my later products
better. This is the only tool I would like to learn in the future because I think
this would open up lots of opportunities in the future.
I think I have learnt a lot during this process and would like to use the techniques
and skills I have learnt in the future.
