TATSULOK

there are two types of social
functions:
○ manifest functions
○ latent functions
34
Structural-Functionalism
MANIFEST FUNCTIONS

intended effects.
● readily attributed to a
specific social structure or

Wrap-
Up ● The main idea in structural functionalism is
that the society is made up of different
components such as institutions, services, and
people that work together and allow the
society to function.
● As body parts have specific functions,
functionalism implies that all structure in
society have their own purpose and specific
functions.

  • #30 PARA SAAN? BAKIT SILA BINUO O NABUO The effects of the social structures or their purpose. Social functions consequences [of each social structure] for the operation of society. ” These can also be understood as the role of a social structure or institution in society. These social functions are at the core of achieving the goal of solidarity and stability.
  • #31 As seen in Fig. 1, interrelatedness and interdependence are observable among social institutions. These institutions include, but are not limited to, the family, school, the economy, religion, culture, and the government. Since they are interrelated and interdependent, social institutions need one another for society to function as a whole. For example, the family nurtures individuals to be part of society. Oftentimes, school teaches an individual the needed skills and knowledge to pursue a career in the future. The economy, particularly companies, may employ individuals who finished schooling to be a productive member of the workforce. Religion plays a role in imparting moral values on how to properly act and behave in a society. Other norms, beliefs, and traditions may also affect one’s behavior and morals. Lastly, the government is expected to ensure the safety and well-being of i ts citizens and can work with schools and the economy to do so. These are all examples of the specific social function(s) of these institutions to keep society going.
  • #32 Social media primarily functions as modern means of communication among family members, friends, and even with institutions. It can be considered as a social institution as it influences us on how to behave towards or interact with other people. Social media can also act as a way of gaining more knowledge on what’s happening around us.
  • #33 Social media can also act as a way of gaining more knowledge on what’s happening around us.
  • #35 Observable functions of society cell phones: Allow mobile communication between people. clothing: Protects the wearer from the elements. marriage ceremonies: Public acknowledgement of union between two or more people which legitimates sexual activity and subsequent children.
  • #36 Latent functions of a school include teaching students to follow the rules, giving them an opportunity to socialize, participate in events, etc. However, the manifest function of a school is educating children. Going back to the previous example, a university becomes an avenue for young people from various walks of life to come together and interact with one another. What is an example of latent function in community? Similarly, an example of latent function can be that in a hospital the doctors while treating a patient suffering from a certain kind of incurable disease somehow saves the patient, thus, discovering a new method of treating that particular disease.
  • #37 1. While functions are intended or recognized (manifest), and may have a positive effect on society, dysfunctions are unintended or unrecognized, and have a negative effect on society. 2. Any action or behavior that has negative consequences for a group or society; an effect of structures that fosters social instability 3. Poverty, Crimes, Depressions
  • #42 As a social institution, the police can both have manifest and latent function. Its manifest function is to serve and protect the welfare of the citizens, especially during the pandemic. On the other hand, its probable latent function is the increased police visibility, which leads to increased surveillance on every action of individuals.
