3. RESEARCH
Whilst researching into my project, it gave me inspiration on what i
need too include. This is so that is appeals to my target audience
and would include features they would enjoy. With researching, it
helped me conclude which idea i would be developing. I conducted
a survey online which had a few responses. The majority of the
responses was with in the ages of 16-24 which is my target
audience. This was ideal because it made my research more
valuable. From my research i gathered that the majority of my
target audience, prefer features of films to include good
settings, lighting and camera angles. Even though this is important,
my film didn't reflect this aspect well. This is because my film
included clips of me as a child, which gave my film a style which
was realistic. However, from the research i did take on board what
emotions would be good to include in my film. This was tension. I
have included both happiness and tension in my film to create a
contrast that is relatable and tension building.
From my research i also gathered that my target audience
preferred genres of comedy, realism and thriller. This helped me
create links between the emotion they preferred as well as the film
style. This helped me create an emotional, realistic film which
helped reflect everyones childhood. This helped add to the realism.
From this i researched into youtube videos and came across a lot
of emotional short films. From this it helped me develop ideas and
gave me a basis on what i should include to make the film as
effective as possible.
4. PLANNING
Whilst planning, it helped me generate different idea
concepts. From this it lead to me creating mood
boards, mind maps and an mood board analysis. This
helped me develop my idea and helped me find
inspiration through emotions and different idea
concepts. I included a lot of facial expressions within
my mood board to try and reflect emotions. This is
because, i feel like what makes a great film is a
emotional one. This can be from feeling fear, to
excitement. I believe it is a basis for what i was wanting
to achieve. From the mood board, i gathered a
collection of colours. This is because different colours
reflect different emotions. This would help me with
conducting what lighting and back grounds to use
when it came to production. This is because it would
give a clear indication on what emotion was being felt
in each shot. I felt like i conducted my ideas and mood
board well. This is because i tried to be as detailed as
possible. However, when it comes to production i tend
to change a lot of the ideas. This can be a negative
due to it being un organised and not planned. In the
future, i need to make sure i stick to the plans that i
originally created. This is because it will make the
planning more effective and persist.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
Through out my production of my short film, i feel like my time
management was my weakness. With my time management i struggled
to plan out my time effectively. This is because it took me a while to
collect footage of me as a child, and then to create original footage which
would fit into my film and be relevant. This became confusing due to how
unsure and disorientated i was with what my visual plan would consist of.
This postponed time due to not knowing what shots would work better,
which lead to me researching more into short, emotional and expressive
films. This leads to me finally coming to terms with what my short film
would be on. From this, it helped me conduct what shots and art style my
film would be. Another factor which postponed time was my editing
knowledge. I’ve hardly used adobe premier before so when it came to
editing, it was a slow and painful process. I feel like if i researched more
into youtube tutorials of editing, it would of sped up my production. This
is because, it would of caused less stress and more effective production.
In the future, i will make sure to research into youtube tutorials. This will
mean i am using my time more effectively and will cause my production
to be more persist and effective.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES – EDITING/POST/AUDIO/CAMERA
Whilst editing, i struggled with many aspects. For example: i began to look through old baby photos and videos
to see if they would sit well in my film. I found this hard due to a lot of my baby footage being on VHS tapes and
i haven't got a VHS player. However, i found some footage on a USB lead and a disc which will suffice. After
gathering photos on a USB lead, i had to go through a lot of photos to pick the ones that would be good for my
film. I found it hard putting the clips together, due to not knowing which clips would work well together. I began
to experiment with different jelly fish clips, seeing if i could overlap and get them to appear at different times. I
found this extremely hard due to not understanding the scaling. This would make the image move weirdly and
not smoothly. This would of thrown off the slow moving effect that i am wanting to achieve. However, after
consulting my tutor, i found this effect easier to do. Another aspect that i covered was Audio. I found this both
easy and difficult. The aspects i struggled with was gathering original audio. This is because it would of become
disorientated and disturbed. This is because i was trying to get use to the input level, which required me to
video a lot of different clips with the same noise. Even though this gave me a variety to chose from, it
postponed time which made production last longer. What i thought i did well was watching the audio to the
clips. The audio worked well with the film, which gave the emotional and meaningful effect that i was wanting to
create. This caused the film to be slow pacing but give off the effect on how fast time can be. In the future, i feel
like i need to work on my camera work. This is because i could of composed the shots better whilst editing. I
would also include a better ending. This is so it has more of a finish. This would add a more emotional effect
and cause the audience to find time a more sensitive subject.
7. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Whilst creating my short film, i had many aspects to consider. One aspect was how
the film would look after i had edited it together. This is because it had to reflect my
film in a emotional and meaningful light, which means it had to be both aesthetically
pleasing as well as well edited together effectively. I feel like with editing, i could of
improved my accuracy a lot better. This is because i struggled with scaling photos
and zooming in on them. This is because they would become disorientated. I feel
like if the footage was better, it would of been easier to scale the clips to a
consistent scale. This effect would of made the film more effective and would of
helped empathise the seriousness of the film. I also feel like i could of included
different effects in to make the film more interest and to make the transition between
shots smoother and fancier. I feel like i should of experimented with different
transition. I would of done this if i used my time more effectively. Also, i wish i had
collected better footage from when i was a child. This is because the footage is
wobbly which causes the film to become a bit disorientated. Even though this works
effectively with my art style, it still could of been clearer and more effective. In the
future, i will make sure the spend more time collecting footage and photos and
editing them, in a sequence, effectively. This will make my overall aesthetic look
better, which will cause my film to be better and more meaningful.
8. AUDIENCE APPEAL
Whilst Planning and Researching, i concluded that my target audience was 16-
25 year olds. This is because i feel like my film displays features of modern day
society, which i feel like my target audience would sympathise and relate to
more. My film is a rather artsy film, which defiantly contains features that are for
the more maturer audience. This is because this film doesn't contain humour or
cartoon characters, it is a realistic film which is designed to make the audience
think and feel different emotions. This is one reason why my film wouldn't appeal
to children. Also, the way my film has been shot and directed is complicated
which shows the younger generation would find it boring and confusing. Where
as, 16-25 year olds would appreciate the art and meaning behind it. Another
reason why i know this film appeals to my target audience, is due to the research
i conducted. From this, i gathered data which was answered by the majority of
16-25 year olds. They all suggested creating a film that contained plot twists. I
feel like i linked my film to my target audience well, but i do feel like i could of
added more features that appealed to them. For example: create a more genre
based film instead of a artsy film. This means the audience appeal would widen
more.
10. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
I love it! I think the best thing about Tempus is it’s heart warming. It
really gets to your heart. It’s emotional. It has a clear timeline of a
young child getting older throughout the years. The music really
goes with it as well. I think that’s another part that gets to your heart
as well as the story.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The ending could be improved by having a finish.
11. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
I liked the soundtrack, the music made it feel extremely nostalgic and
the slow but persistent music reminded me of the movement of time.
The inserts of the audio clips made it feel personal and again helped
portray the movement of time.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Maybe a clearer ending but overall the film had a clear narrative
that conveyed the movement of time.
12. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
I liked this film because it is very different to everyone else’s films. I
liked the music and the audio, and I liked the fact that it is a short film,
but it includes someone’s entire childhood and adulthood.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The ending of the film was very abrupt, and it doesn’t really have a
conclusion. This could have been improved.
13. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the majority of my peers feedback. I feel like the story could of
had a better ending, which would of helped conclude and close the story
better. However, i left it open which allows the audience to fill in the gaps. I
feel like i used the correct audio, which helped me portray the movement
of time. This is due to my film being revolved around the concept of time
and growing up.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
The feedback i disagree with would have to be peer 3s feedback.
This is because even though they believed the film was effective, it
did contain a lot in the film (aka someones entire childhood-
adulthood). I disagree with this, due to it reflecting what i was wanting
to portray. If i didn't include the growth of someone, the film would of
become disorientated. Where as, i included these aspects due to it
being a relatable subject to everyones childhood/adult hood.
