Key elements of SEIRI
• Eliminate the unnecessary items that
are not required in the work place.
• Make work easier by eliminating
obstacles.
• Reduce chances of being disturbed with
unnecessary items.
• Prevent accumulation of unnecessary
items like cleaning cloth, used sand
papers, unnecessary samples not related
to current operation

SEIRI (SORTING)
SEIRI is the first step in 5S, it refers to the sorting of the clutter from the other
items within the work area that are actually needed.

SEIRI (SORTING)
Seiton is the process of taking the required items that are remaining after the
removal of clutter and arranging them in an efficient manner through the use of
ergonomic principles and ensuring that every item “has a place and that everything
is in its place.”
SEITON (ARRANGEMENT)

SEISO (Cleaning)
Seiso is the thorough cleaning of the area, tools, machines and other equipment to
ensure that everything is returned to a “nearly new” status.

• This step provides a
clear understanding to
other users about the
functionality of the
equipment.
SEIKETSU (Standardize)
SEIKETSU is the process of ensuring that what we have done within the first three
stages of 5S become standardized; that is to ensure that the common standards and
ways of working are established.

• Maintain self discipline.
• Train yourself and those around you to
be disciplined.
• Follow the rules to maintain the
standard & continue to improve every
day.
SHITSUKE(Self dicipline)

Shitsuke or sustain, ensuring that the company continue to continually improve using the
previous stages of 5S, maintain housekeeping, and conduct audits and so forth. 5S should
become part of the culture of the business and the responsibility of everyone in the
organization.
• Efficiency gains of the order of 10% to 30% can be achieved by the
implementation of 5S.
• Due to the removal of unnecessary items in a work area during the first stage of
5S, a lot of time is saved and simplify the operational procedure.
• 5S implementation ensures the most efficient work methodology and clear
standards, which prevents delays, defects and other wasteful occurrences.
• In-House 5S training is the best way to ensure all the 5S training materials that
will be needed to achieve excellence.

  • 11. • Clean the laboratory completely. • Keep the laboratory safe and easy to work. • Keep the laboratory clean and pleasing to perform experiments.   • 12. • This step provides a clear understanding to other users about the functionality of the equipment. SEIKETSU (Standardize) SEIKETSU is the process of ensuring that what we have done within the first three stages of 5S become standardized; that is to ensure that the common standards and ways of working are established.   • 13. • Maintain self discipline. • Train yourself and those around you to be disciplined. • Follow the rules to maintain the standard & continue to improve every day. SHITSUKE(Self dicipline) Figure 7: Maintain as a standard practice Shitsuke or sustain, ensuring that the company continue to continually improve using the previous stages of 5S, maintain housekeeping, and conduct audits and so forth. 5S should become part of the culture of the business and the responsibility of everyone in the organization.
