Efforts to establish separate women’s facility • Means of protecting men from spread of venereal disease • California Industrial Farm for Women at Sonoma (1922 - opened for 1 year) • Through efforts of WCTU a new women’s building was created at San Quentin with capacity of 120 inmates in 1927 • 1933 California Institution for Women opened at Tehachapi opened • 1935 a voter initiative established CIW as a separate institution with independent board of trustees 40 Boardman Place www.cjcj.org San Francisco, CA 94103 © Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice 2013
