Visual Planning
Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
• You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
• The following tasks are part of your visual planning
• Pre-visualisation and concept boards
• Storyboarding
• Shot list
Pre-visualisation/Concept Boards
• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
• Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

My Ramblings Of Ideas
• So the track I have chosen is called Unshaken, by a R&B and Soul singer called D'Angelo,
now I really don't listen to this type of music at all but this track caught my attention
when I came to the end of a game Red Dead Redemption 2. This track really rezenates
with the main character of the game and how he has gone from a criminal trying to
survive in a time when people like him are not wanted to the character trying right all the
wrongs he's done before he dies an untimely death from Tuberculosis. So one idea I have
for this video is to create a short but powerful montage or highlight reel of the main
character, starting from the beginning of the game to the very end and show off how he
went from a criminal on the run to someone facing death trying to correct everything
wrong he has done.
• Now for my second idea I would like to take some elements from the first idea but change
it up a lot. So I would like to keep the same track for this idea but I think I would like to
make a video about a bank robbery that would happen in the game as it still fits with the
meaning of the song. So the video would start off with memebers of the gang talking
about the bank robbery and how they are going to do it. I then think the shot would fade
out and then a real life shot of sun breaking through the branches in a tree would fade in
and back. All of a sudden the gang is robbing the bank, the audience see's how they
operate in a situation they are in, then we see things turn sideways for the gang as the
law show up and they are going to have to fight their way out of the bank, this is when
the music will kick in. The audience will then see the escape of the bank play out with
them shooting through waves of lawmen and then jumping on their horses to eventually
lose the law in which the music and footage will slowly fade out.
Structural breakdown
• Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus,
verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
• You can use this as the master template for your production, then
add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual
plan

Storyboarding
• Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
• Provides a basis for production
• Suggested online storyboard creators are:
• http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
• http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
• Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
• There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
Storyboard
This is the first half of my story board, now I have done my story board like this because I cannot
draw and the website I have used is quite limited. So here I have set the scene in the first three
pictures. I pretty much explianed my video in my second idea. So here are the first three scenes
of my video. The video will start off with the characters at their camp talking about the bank
robbery they are about to do and then you can see the front of the bank.
Here is the second part of my story
board, now the website was limited so
I will explain what I have tried to show.
So in the first picture it shows the front
of the bank ( because I couldn't find a
picture of the inside) in this picture the
gang will be robbing the bank and the
next two will show the ensuing chase
Shot List
• Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to
shoot for your video – it is both a creative tool for planning and practical tool for
filming
• It should work in partnership with your storyboard
• It will be your working document when you film
• It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and
action you will see
• It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc
• Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
Task 3.2
Organisational Planning
Production Group Info
• Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production,
using a table is suggested
Location information
• Information and images of your location[s] for filming
• You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming, recce photos
and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
• Considering 90% of my video is purley footage from a video game I only have two
locations for the real life shots that I have to do. The shot that I wanted to
capture would be sun breaking through some trees and then capturing a full
moon. Now I can do both of these in my back garden which I have done.
