3. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
ā¢ This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
ā¢ You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
ā¢ It is important that you āpre-visualiseā the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
ā¢ The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ā¢ Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ā¢ Storyboarding
ā¢ Shot list
4. Pre-visualisation/Concept Boards
ā¢ Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
ā¢ Provides inspiration and information for the ālook & feelā
ā¢ Presents key moments in your video
ā¢ A means to sketch/plan ideas
ā¢ Information on colour/lighting
ā¢ Defining the āmise-en-sceneā
ā¢ Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
ā¢ Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
5. Pre-Visualisation/Concept Boards
As you can see,
a few of these
images have
chroma keying.
This bad style is
what I want to
do in the final
product, the rest
are just bad
dancing in the
middle of the
screen. I would
like to replicate
a few of these
dance moves.
6. Structural breakdown
ā¢ Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus,
verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
ā¢ You can use this as the master template for your production, then
add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual
plan
7. Structural breakdown
The editing plan for my video is to have the scene change with every other line in
the verse, and then when the chorus kicks in, itāll speed up and change with every
line. The shots wonāt have any specific order, but once I make the first verse, the
second will follow that style. Thereās a breakdown towards the end and each beat
will have a different scene in that, and then when the singing resumes the dancing
will go back to normal.
8. Storyboarding
ā¢ Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
ā¢ Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
ā¢ Provides a basis for production
ā¢ Suggested online storyboard creators are:
ā¢ https://www.storyboardthat.com
ā¢ http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
ā¢ http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
ā¢ Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
ā¢ There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
10. Shot List
ā¢ Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video ā it is both a creative tool for planning
and practical tool for filming
ā¢ It should work in partnership with your storyboard
ā¢ It will be your working document when you film
ā¢ It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
ā¢ It should also have information on performers in the scene and other
props, etc
ā¢ Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
11. Shot list

13. Production Group Info
ā¢ Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of
production, using a table is suggested
14. Location information
ā¢ Information and images of your location[s] for filming
ā¢ You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
ā¢ Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
ā¢ Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
15. Kit requirements
Iāll need a camera, tripod, SD card and battery for the camera. The
battery speaks for itself, but the camera I need to record shots with
them looking semi-professional. If I were to film on my phone, I feel
like the video would be low quality and end up like this. The tripod
helps to keep the camera steady and the SD card means that I can
transfer the video from the camera to the computer. Iāll also need a
computer with video editing software so I can actually make my video.
