There are four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening involves receiving and understanding spoken messages. Speaking is the interactive process of constructing meaning through vocal sounds. Reading is the cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning. Writing is using symbols like alphabets and punctuation to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.

thinks in his own language .

 It is an active process of receiving and responding to spoken messages
/sounds.
 It is actually understanding of what you hear.
 It is of 2 types
 Interactive ( calls, discussion and conversation )
 Non-interactive (T.V. sermons and speeches)

4. Speaking
 It is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves
producing and receiving information
 It is an act of making vocal sounds
 It is to converse or express one’s thoughts and feelings in vocal sound

5. Reading
 It is cognitive process of decoding symbols to arrive at meaning
 It is an active process of constructing meaning of words
 it involves recognizing words
 It has three types
 Skimming (rapid reading to gain general overview of material )
 Scanning (rapid reading to gain specific facts to answer the questions)
 Read-in-depth (comprehension )

 It is a process of using symbols like alphabets , punctuation and spaces to
communicate the thoughts and ideas in a readable form
 It is also defines as the symbolic representation of thoughts and ideas
which can be read by someone .
