Students should develop their listening and speaking skills side by side with their reading and writing skills

An average student can listen to their teachers and classmates in school, to their parents and other members of the family at home, to announcers on the radio and television programs.
IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING
Accurate and perceptive listening will minimize misunderstandings and help students to sustain satisfying and productive relationships.
Careful listening can be critical to work situations.
Listening enables listeners to provide feedback to speakers.
Effective listening abilities strengthen the other language arts: reading comprehension and written communication.

Involves;
Recognition - Selection - Short Memory - Inference
Explanation:
The listener recognizes the sounds and the words; he engages in a process of selection on two levels – selecting sounds and words and grouping them into meaningful units as well as selecting the information relevant to his purpose in listening. This information is stored in then stored in the short-term memory, ready to be used; the inference is about the speakers age, beliefs, feelings, etc. Is an important micro-skill in listening.

We hear sounds, words, the rise and fall of voice, from all which we create significance.
We listen not for the words alone but for the meanings.
Rivers; significance depends on three factors:
Linguistic information which the listeners perceive aurally of sounds, words, and their arrangements in utterances
Situational context of the utterance
Intentions of the speaker
Many of the students can hear but do not comprehend because it is only the linguistic content of the utterance that is given attention.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

It is a psychological process that involves
● Receiver (receiving message)
● Message (constructing meaning from it)
● Sender (responding to messages)
Listening skill is a process of receiving, interpreting and
reacting to a message from the speaker. No conversation is
complete without listening.Thus act of skillful listening is the
basis for developing intelligence.
6. Hearing and listening are two different terms.
1) Hearing is a physical
response or act to
perceive (understand)
sound through the ear.
2) It is a passive process.
1) Listening requires concentration
so that your brain processes
meaning from words and
sentences. It leads to learning.
2) It is a active process.
7. 2) Speaking skill :
❖ Speaking skill is an ability to convey or express one’s
message, information, ideas, feelings, thoughts,
opinions verbally in suitable manner in front of others
based on different matters.
❖ It is one of the most interactive and productive skill.
❖ It develops understanding through communication.
❖ It also develops inter - personal skills (team working).
8. 3) Reading skill :
★ Reading skill is the ability of an individual to read, comprehend and
interpret written words on any reading material such as books, article,
newspapers etc.
★ It is an integral part of modern life.It helps to discover new things by
enabling to educate yourself in any area or field of life.
★ Henceforth, it develops mind, imagination power, creative thinking in
order to do research.
★ There are strategies of reading comprehension : re- read the text,
activate prior knowledge, infer the meaning, summarize the story, use
context clues, locate key words, visualize properly and evaluate
understanding.
10. 4) Writing skill :
➢ Writing skill is a important and powerful tool used in everyday life.
➢ It includes all the knowledge and abilities related to expressing ideas through the
written word.
➢ Writing is used to store information, make a permanent record, and for
communication.
➢ It can be pictograph- or alphabet-based.
➢ Examples of writing skill : Grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, clarity,
brevity, engagement, proofreading, revising, professional writing skills, note taking,
letter writing, email writing, MS Office, business writing, communication skills.
11. What have we learn today ?
Researchers have found that the four
language skill areas ie listening,
speaking, reading and writing are all
integrated and interdependent on each
other.
