The document outlines how Emma used technologies like Photoshop and page layout tools in Microsoft Word to design the magazine pages. It analyzes how the magazine represents the indie music genre and audience. Overall, the document evaluates how Emma's magazine uses conventions of real media formats and how she has developed her skills in media design and targeting audiences.
The document analyzes research conducted to inform the creation of a gender fluid fashion magazine. This includes a target audience survey, interviews, and analysis of existing magazine covers, spreads, and elements. Key findings indicate that images and models are very important for attracting readers. Readers want to see discussions of gender fluid fashion history and stories from people in the community. Brands like Weekday and Boden are considered androgynous. Overall, the research provides valuable insights to help make the magazine appealing and relevant for its target audience.

This document provides an evaluation of Lauren Cudworth's media studies magazine project. It summarizes the key aspects of the magazine, including its target audience (originally 14-18 year olds but changed to 17-21), genre (chart music), and unique selling point (covering multiple music genres). It also analyzes elements of the magazine, such as how the cover page conforms to music magazine conventions and how the magazine represents older music stars to appeal to both younger fans and their parents. The document recommends IPC as a potential media institution to distribute the magazine due to their experience with music magazines.
The document analyzes existing magazine products and identifies common features to help inform the design of a new film magazine. It finds that the existing magazines are all based in busy cities, have similar layouts with mastheads, subtitles and celebrity images. Key aspects that will be included are the magazine layout and basics like the barcode. An audience profile is also created, identifying the target demographic as those aged 16 and up of any gender or social status interested in films. Environmental content may appeal to conscientious readers.
This document summarizes and analyzes various aspects of different magazine covers and articles.
It discusses the color themes, layouts, typography, images and target audiences of the front covers and articles from several magazines focused on feminism, including Debate, That's What She Said, and Teen Breathe. Key aspects noted include the use of pastel colors, illustrations, simple and clear layouts and fonts. Comparisons are drawn between the different magazines' styles and design elements. The document examines what visual elements would appeal most to the target audiences and draws inspiration for the creator's own feminist magazine.
Here are my key observations from the interview:
- The interviewee associates brands like Stone Island, CP Company and Adidas with football casual clothing. They recognize these as commonly worn brands at football matches.
- Their favorite brand for the model to wear would be Stone Island, as they see it as a respected brand within football culture, even if they are not personally interested in the "football side" of it.
- They would prefer the magazine focus more on clothing than interviews, as they are more interested in seeing photos and details of the clothing rather than reading descriptions.
- They expect brands like Stone Island featured in the magazine to be on the higher-priced side, recognizing it as a "hyped"
This document discusses the print media project that the author completed, which involved creating a magazine cover, contents page, and double page spread using Photoshop. The author explains that they chose to do the print task over film because they gained knowledge of what makes a magazine successful during their preliminary work. The document then discusses how the author's magazine uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real magazines through elements like cover lines, mastheads, headlines, and unconventional design choices. It also explains how the magazine represents teenagers in an aspirational way rather than using stereotypes. Finally, it proposes that IPC Media would be a suitable institution to distribute the magazine due to their target audiences and brands.
The document summarizes the process of creating a school magazine focused on pop music. It discusses researching conventions of magazines like Smash Hits and Top of the Pops to understand their layout, design, and target audiences. Conventions for the front cover, contents page, and double page spreads are analyzed. The intended audience is girls aged 9-15, and the magazine will be published by a company like Bauer Media or DC Thompson.
The document discusses how the author addressed their audience for their music magazine. They conducted research on similar magazines to understand conventions. They also distributed a questionnaire to their target audience to understand what content and features would appeal to them. Key findings included that the target audience was mostly female aged 16-24 who listen to pop/rock music daily and regularly read music magazines. The author also discusses elements of the magazine like the bold masthead, color scheme using red, black and white, and column-based layout to attract readers and not overwhelm them with text.
The author created an Instagram account and logo to promote their fanzine and gain followers from feminist accounts. They researched online printing options and chose Mixam, which printed 8 copies of their fanzine for £30.50. The author plans to attend a fanzine event in York in August to showcase and sell their fanzine, and has also uploaded it to Issuu and applied to sell it through People of Print and in the Travelling Man shop in York.
- The initial target audience for the project was females aged 16-26 who are interested in feminism and finding positive role models. No restrictions were placed on race, religion, or marital status.
- The target psychographics included those concerned about how their actions affect the world and wanting to make a positive difference through actions like recycling and fuel efficiency.
- Role models featured in the project were included to ensure the target audience would be familiar with them.
The document discusses the author's process of printing and distributing their fanzine project. They emailed printing companies for quotes and ultimately chose Mixam.com as the cheaper option. The author also researched ways to promote their fanzine, such as attending a fanzine event in York, creating an Instagram account featuring their logo and fanzine photos, and uploading it to the website Issuu. The goal is to attract their target audience and see how popular the fanzine becomes.
The student proposes creating a follow up to their previous feminist fanzine project with the theme of "Role Models". They plan to interview people around the world about their role models and why those people inspire them. The student recognizes evaluation has been a weakness in past projects, so they will keep a development diary and seek peer feedback during production to improve their evaluation. The proposal outlines a 20 week production schedule that includes research, experiments, planning, production, editing, and evaluation. The goal is to create a professional fanzine that highlights inspiring women and that people will enjoy reading.
The document summarizes a student's 36-page feminist fanzine project focused on role models, targeted at females aged 16-26. Through a survey of 11 respondents and examining popular feminist magazines, the student identified design elements to include - plain backgrounds for text/images to stand out, bold colorful front covers. Peer and target audience feedback prompted layout revisions. While wanting to include more features/interviews, time constraints prevented this. The student is pleased with the personal, professionally printed final product and is pursuing display and distribution opportunities.
The document summarizes the target audience, research, peer feedback, edits, and plans for distributing a fanzine project. The initial target audience was females aged 16-26 interested in feminism and positive role models. Research was conducted. Peer feedback suggested adding background color and aligning columns. Edits improved consistency but some text remained bulky. Distribution plans included printing, an event, Instagram, and Issuu.
This document contains feedback from three peers on a fanzine project. The feedback praised the illustrations but suggested improvements to the layout and formatting of text columns. One peer recommended adding more color variation. In response, the creator agreed that layout and text alignment could be improved. They were unsure about adding backgrounds but may try it in some places. The feedback was helpful to identify areas for refinement as the project is further developed.
This document contains peer feedback on a fanzine created by the author. The feedback provides suggestions to improve the layout and formatting of the fanzine, noting that some columns of text are not aligned properly. The art style and illustrations receive praise from peers, while some note the font sizes could be larger. Based on the feedback, the author would look to improve the text column alignment and consider adding background colors on some pages to make the fanzine less plain.
This document contains weekly development diary entries from a student working on their final major project to create a feminist fanzine. Over four weeks, the student focused on research, experiments, and problem solving. Their research included analyzing existing fanzines and magazines, conducting a survey, and secondary research. Experiments involved learning new skills like photography, graphics, and InDesign. The student identified potential problems and solutions, such as reloading software or printing on paper if unable to print the fanzine. They reflected on staying organized and on track during their project work.
The document outlines plans for a fanzine that interviews people about their role models. It discusses ideas for including poems, illustrations, and in-depth interviews in the fanzine. It also covers plans for layout, design elements like colors and fonts, potential interviews, and sample page layouts. The writer aims to create a fanzine they will be proud of that readers will enjoy learning about different role models through.
The document discusses various potential problems and solutions the author has considered for their FMP project creating a fanzine. Some key issues addressed include:
1. Equipment issues like using backup cameras, memory cards, and voice recorders for interviews. Software issues like using different computers if programs crash and saving regularly.
2. Power and computer issues like saving often so not much work is lost if there is a crash, and having backup plans to work manually if needed.
3. Backing up work daily on external drives in case files are lost or corrupted. Saving differently when working on different devices.
4. Allowing extra production time for unexpected issues but having backup plans like working during buffer weeks if
The document discusses potential problems and solutions the student may encounter during their FMP project creating a fanzine. Some key issues addressed include:
1) Equipment issues like camera or voice recorder malfunctions which the student plans to back up with a phone or extra memory cards.
2) Technical problems like computer crashes which the student will prevent by regular saving and using downtime to plan if needed.
3) Theoretical challenges like difficult interviews being solved by scheduling face-to-face meetings and recording video calls if needed.
4) Ensuring production stays on schedule by completing work before the deadline so production time can be fully used.
The finished product was complete and ready for use. It had gone through all stages of development and manufacturing without any issues. Customers would be able to start using and benefiting from the new product immediately.
The document discusses drafts of various titles and products that were developed. It includes 3 drafts each of titles for Michelle Obama, Jacinda Ardern, Jameela Jamil, and Rosa Parks. It also discusses drafts of printed fanzines, with the author noting changes made between drafts such as replacing an image found online with an original illustration to better fit the theme, or redrawing a blurry logo. Comments from reviews of early drafts by "Dave" are mentioned, as well as filters and edits applied to images in later drafts to style them for the fanzine.
This document provides context and planning details for a fanzine project highlighting role models. The student began by researching relevant practitioners like journalist Caitlin Moran and feminist magazine Fem Newsmagazine to spark ideas. Primary research through a survey informed content choices. Planning included a front cover featuring celebrity role model faces in pastels to appeal to the target audience. The student aimed to match aspects of this fanzine to their previous one for consistency.
Hannah Flowers is pursuing a project titled "The Year of Women" focused on journalism and independent publishing. She plans to create a follow up to her previous feminist fanzine with the theme of "Role Models" by interviewing people around the world about their role models and what inspires them. Hannah aims to improve on evaluating her work by keeping a development diary throughout the project and getting peer feedback midway through production. She provides a detailed schedule across 20 weeks to complete pre-production, production, evaluation, and presentation of her fanzine project.
The document lists drafts of titles for biographies on several prominent figures, including Michelle Obama, Jacinda Ardern, and Jameela Jamil. For each title, there are between one and three drafts listed. The document also indicates that draft one and two were printed, with the printed drafts listed repeatedly, and draft three was similarly printed.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
This document provides a weekly summary of the development of a student's final major project creating a feminist fanzine. In week one, the student conducted research on role models Caitlin Moran and the magazine Fem. They realized they need to widen their research to 3 topics. In week two, the student continued researching feminist theories and existing feminist fanzines and magazines. They created a survey to gather audience feedback. In week three, the student identified potential problems like software or funding issues and explored solutions through practice with recording equipment and graphics to prepare for production challenges.
To me media is about the intensity of words; it can dominate, it can spread ideas to thousands of people; it can make people think about the society which we have all become accustomed to. Becoming a journalist has been a long-held passion for me. I would like to work for a more liberal left leaning paper such as the Guardian and be the type of journalist who stands up for what she believes in. Over two years studying creative media production and technology, I have built my confidence in the media spectrum and gained experience writing for publications and undertaking work experience in journalism. I look forward to pursuing my dream of a career in journalism and believe I am well suited to the demands of a journalism degree because I have a passion

2. Existing Product
Cosmopolitan
MagazineCosmopolitan is a relationship, sex, health,
careers, self-improvement, celebrities, fashion
and beauty magazine. Most magazines
encourage feminism and this is one of them
magazines. I have chosen this magazine to do
as an existing product as this is the kind of
magazine which I would like to produce. The
layout of this magazine is rather similar to my ideal magazine which I will produce
except my magazine wont be aimed at a specific gender unlike this one. The image
location are very similar in many of the cosmopolitan magazines. As Cosmo is a
empowering woman magazine the pose of the front cover girl always look very
powerful. This is especially shown in the Zendaya cover as the clothes which she is
wearing a suit and the red can connote danger and power. The angle of the images
show that even know they are celebrities they can relate to the reader, this would
create a personal connection between the reader which would make them buy the
magazine and relate to the celebrity throughout the article which has been written
about them .The two covers above look very similar which could show that if the reader
saw the cover they would automatically know that it is the Cosmopolitan magazine.
The fonts are very bold which would stand out more for the reader making them want
to
3. Direct Address- This is when the main image
on the cover makes direct eye contact with
the reader, this increases the intensity
between the reader and the celebrity. This
allows the reader to be drawn in and intrigued
to what this
celebrity would have to say in this magazine.
This can also give the effect of the magazine
and the reader to have more of a personal
connection. This gives the reader a slight
idea that most of the articles are aimed at the
reader.
Anchorage text is the biggest text after the
masthead, it catches peoples attention. Most of
the time the anchorage text links to the main
image but in this cover it doesn't.
Cosmopolitan has
recently become famous for
their sex tips, this is why “You
deserve better sex” is the
anchorage as this is what the
audience wants to see. The
anchorage text also makes the
article more personal to the
reader, because of the font,
colour and boldness it gives a
personal connection between
the reader and the article.
Cover line- The cover lines are
used to inform the audience what is
featured in this issue. Cosmopolitan
magazine focuses on relationship,
sex, health, careers, self-
improvement, celebrities, fashion
and beauty. These topics will come
up on the front cover as the
mastheads as this is what the
reader wants to read. This suggests
the target audience for
cosmopolitan is focused on teenage
girls onwards. This is because this
age group will be interested in the
celebrity topics and how to get
perfect hair and make up. There is
only one serious cover line on the
front cover yet that is played off as
a funny entertaining scenario.
Masthead- The masthead
is the red title displayed
across the top of the page.
Most of the mastheads
which are shown on the
magazine are the same
style so people can
recognize them from far
away even if the colour has
been changed. It also is the
boldest font on the page
which
makes it stand out more, it
contrasts with the
background as they are
both similar colours yet the
masthead still stands out.
Image- The main image is a medium
long shot. This allows the celebrity to
fill out the whole of the page. As the
image is the focus the reader would
automatically think there is a big article
wrote about her.
Colour theme- This is stereotypically
girly, It includes bright colours to
attract the teenage readers.
4. Existing Product
Vanity Fair Magazine
Vanity Fair is a well known magazine.
However, it is more well known in America
than in England. It is a pop culture fashion
and current affairs based magazine. This
magazine includes five international editions
of the magazine
5. Direct Address- The celebrity (Angelina Jolie) is directly
looking at the audience making a personal connection
between the celebrity and the reader. This could give the
reader the feeling that the article which is written about the
celebrity and any advice given during that article the reader
had to follow
it. The direct address also gives a intensity
to buy the magazine.Cover line- This cover isn't filled with
cover lines which is very typical of
Vanity Fair as it is a very classy
lifestyle magazine. Most of the cover
lines which are featured on this cover
are aimed at an older female
generation aged 25-48. There is
nothing which relates to anyone
younger than this age. Most of the
cover lines are rather serious like
“How to save a 100,000 ton drowning
ship” and “Van Gogh suicide or
murder?”. These are very serious
which would attract the audience.
Image- This image is of a very famous actor, filmmaker and
humanitarian. The obvious reason why she is the main
image is more than likely that there is a article wrote about
her- celebrity endorsement attracts Target audience.
Colour theme- This colour scheme is
very neutral compared to some of the
covers which are in this pro forma. The
natural background contrasts between
the red and black font colour and
makes it stand out. The masthead
stands out more than others so people
will be more attracted to reading
Jolie’s article.
Anchorage text is the largest text after the
masthead, it catches peoples attention. Most of
the time the anchorage text links to the main
image and in this cover it does. Vanity Fair is
creating the link between Jolie
and the anchorage text to
attract more
peoples attention so when they
see this they will want to know
what her upcoming project is. At the
time this cover was
published it was when Brad and
Angelina split. A lot of the
audience would want to know
what is going on with her and
how she is coping with the
separation. ‘Angelina Jolie’ is
written in the same colour as the
masthead to make it stand out,
‘awesome’ is also the largest font. The top
of the page shows a banner
in italics which links to ‘
awesome’ showing that the two
pieces of text are linked.Masthead- The masthead in
this cover is the largest text.
The text is the same as all
vanity fairs magazines. However, the colour has
changed to juxtapose the neutral shades on the
background. The font is always the same to let the
reader recognise immediately.

Time Out Magazine
This magazine is very different from the
others which I have chose to analyse. This
free publication is distributed at central
London Stations. In the magazine it gives
information on the tickets in London, any
offers, Things to do when in the big city,
Restaurants, Events and Festivals, as well
as for kids to do and many other things.
This is the most similar to what I would like to create when producing my magazine. I
would like to take inspiration from Scarlett Johansson cover. I like the theme of the
photo as it makes the cover stand out because its choice of effect. When looked at this
product I learnt that a simplistic front cover is very eye catching. This is because there
is not loads of text which distract you from the larger image. The background is very
plain which makes the main image stand out more.

• What aspects of the research will you

27. Interview 1
Do you think print media is a dying industry? And why?
Yes, because the rise of social media and the internet, people are reading magazines and
newspapers less and less, as well as the rise of digital posters, which means that even physical
posters are becoming less common. I do think print media is a dying industry because of this.
What initially interests you in a magazine? And why?
The cover, because it should tell me all I need to know about a magazine before I read it.
What kind of magazines do you read? How could they be improved?
I read mostly media based magazines like Empire and PC gamer, because I am interesting in
things like show reviews and behind the scenes footage. I think the magazines could be improved
with less pointless advertising on the inside. Like how some magazines have coupons for window
cleaner. This seems unnecessary to me.
How do you usually hear about different magazines?
I usually see magazines in the shop when I am busy buying other things and they attract my
attention if they are well done on the covers.
What would you want to see in a lifestyle magazine?
Attractive men and women in stylish clothing.
28. Interview 1
• Observation: This interview was conducted by a 17 year old. It was interesting to see the
viewpoint of this individual as they were younger than the person who I interviewed in interview 2 yet
they both had similar answers. This interviewee expressed that he thought print media was a dying
industry and people are now using social media to read articles. Also this person said that they look
more at the cover of a magazine then anything else because this should be the first impression of the
magazine.
• What this says about my audience: This says about my audience that they take note of
what should catch their attention and what attracts you. They take note of what the articles are based
on as my interviewee answered the last question with a stylish cover. Knowing how this reader finds
out about magazines is very useful as if I have more time at the end of my project I could do a advert
on how the audience finds out.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this
audience as I will make sure I have a eye catching cover with bright colours and a image which
represents what the magazine is about and other articles involved in the issue.
29. Interview 2
Do you think print media is a dying industry? And why?
Print media is struggling but there seems to be some sort of resurgence in places. It think it
depends on the market. Lifestyle and food magazines seem to be working well. Higher end sports
(Rouler for example) and fashion seem to be holding up. Newspapers are struggling. That said, it
requires the same elements of photographers, journalists, editors and advertisers to produce a
website or a digital edition as it does the print version. The medium is changing. People still do
like to hold something real as opposed to a digital version.
What initially interests you in a magazine? And why?
Photography and the subject of the magazine first. Then the design work. The content is important
to keep people coming back but to get them to buy in the first place, great photographs are a good
way to go.
How could some magazines that you read be improved?
I prefer a bit more detail in my writing. Often, magazines commission very short articles. Sometimes the
content advertised with cover lines on the front is a bit of a let down when you get to it. I’d take fewer,
more detailed articles over lots of small ones. The small ones feel more like social media but when I sit
down with a magazine, I have the time to read in detail.
How do you usually hear about different magazines?
Social media might flag up a new release but mostly I see by going to a supermarket or newsagent and
seeing what is new.
What would you want to see in a lifestyle magazine?
Places to visit, inspiring and aspirational images and well chosen typography. The magazine should
reflect the content so if it is a higher end lifestyle magazine, the content should also be high end.
